“Fuddy duddy, overpriced charm in the heart of Verona.”
Reviewed 17 October 2009

We chose the Gabbia D'Oro on the basis of location alone and were not disappointed. It is in the heart of Verona, and you have everything within easy walking distance.

Walking into the hotel was a bit like walking into a stage set of a stately home of bygone years. If you like clutter, bling, and something quirky and 'different', then this is your dream hotel. There is a myriad of curiosities liberally sprinkled around the whole place, and lots of nooks and crannies to be explored. It's the sort of hotel where the 'Famous 5' would probably go as grown ups.

Our room was a dream in Laura Ashley style circa 1989, with lots of flower prints, trailing curtains, with lots more antiques thrown in for good measure. This almost includes the tiny TV set, but it was bang up to date with Satellite tv. But this is not why you come to the Gabbia d'Oro! At night, even with the windows closed, we could still hear a lot of noise in the courtyard below , and this made it difficult to get off to sleep. In the conservatory, there was an open book of poems which guests have written in praise and awe of the Hotel, but the last entry was written two years ago.

Back to the room, and the bed was very comfortable, but overall, the room was rather dark, as other reviewers have commented. We did not have acres of space, but it was adequate. Our experience with the bathroom was exactly the same as other reviewers. There was only a bath (albeit a real cast iron wide bearthed proper stand alone bath) with a fancy hand held antique style shower head. It took 20 minutes to run a bath, and when using the hand held shower, the floor was very quickly flooded.

The major crime however, was the toilet brush. It was proudly displayed on a small stand alone 'hanger' with no cover, and it was obviously very, very well used. It was absolutely disgraceful, unhygenic, revolting, etc. I leave it to your imagination. I have never seen anything like this in a hotel of this standard. Yuk.

Breakfast was not five star standard - a bain marie with curled up pieces of white toast inside masquerading as Eggs Benedictine is taking poetic licence just a little too far. There was no waiter/ess service and we had to go looking for someone to bring us some hot milk for our son. The spread was not sumptuous, and looked a little in need of inspiration. Again, certainly not 5 star.

Positively, the staff are friendly, and extremely helpful and really make you feel welcome. The location is fabulous, and you are in the heart of Verona. The hotel is cute, quirky, and different. It is comfortable and relaxed. However, at 500 Euro for one night's accommodation and breakfast, with another 30 Euro for parking (ouch), I would have expected more in the way of luxury and attention to detail. It is overpriced, old fashioned, and just a little bit fuddy duddy. Having said all that, it is just a little bit different and this is what also makes it interesting.

I used to stay with Gabbia D'Oro for last 3 years for St.Valentine Day with my wife on my way home from Dolomites. Very comfortable atmosphere, friendly and helpfull staff, spacy rooms, good breakfast. U couldnot find better location to stay in Verona.
Ideal hotel with perfect service. Would return again next year/
P.S. Price for car parking could be lower. :)

Stayed four nights in August. Very old property with helpful reception staff. Nice suite overlooking courtyard but lacking some basic equipent e.g no hooks to hang robes etc, very small bathroom with shower over bath but difficult to get in and out of and a fold-away bidet because of the narrowness of the room. TV was very poor.
Don't have breakfast - it was a very expensive mistake. The food was very basic, it was not replenished, and the cooked breakfast was egg and bacon on toast or nothing.

Stay here and everything in Verona is conveniently on foot. The Arena (for the opera - we saw the Barber of Seville) is about 10 - 15 minutes.

We were upgraded to a suite and although the rooms are small, everything was clean and staff were friendly. The buffet breakfast (part of our deal) was good, although we were a little surprised to find cheap orange juice - just not in keeping with the antique glam of the surroundings.

The Sky TV was not working, but frankly I was only going to put on background music so I didn't even bother to report it.

A charming little hotel.

We only stayed one night in a smallish double room, but there was still room for a sofa and writing desk. Unfortunately the air conditioning was broken and the room was extremely hot as the windows opened onto an enclosed courtyard - we wouldn't have wanted to stay any longer without air conditioning!

The staff were extremely helpful in arranging trains and taxis for us, and giving us hints of where to go to get wonderful views. The breakfast buffet was a sight to be seen, and they even made us fresh toast.

The common areas of the hotel are delightful and quirky.

Downsides: We didn't like the mirrored doors everywhere or the black bathroom, but that's just a matter of taste. And obviously no air conditioning made it very hot. Parking cost 30 euros a night in their secure parking garage - apparently about a half hour away from the hotel.

This hotel is a little gem in the heart of Verona. Overall the location was perfect, very central with very attentive staff and big comfy rooms and beds. Verona is such a beautiful city and this hotel completely compliments it. It is cosy, comfortable and has lots of interesting "antique" touches. The staff were very helpful when it came to recommending restaurants and both that they recommended were excellent, full of Italians and not tourists. Its only downside is that it is fairly expensive but it's worth it if you want a romantic treat in a beautiful and very romantic city.

One of us was here 15 years ago but the place has changed little. A gloriously over-decorated interior with eccentric collection of real and fake antiques , minimalist it is NOT . But for those of us who love the warm atmosphere, the cosy and comfortable rooms, the impeccable and friendly service, the ease of valet parking in a nightmare city, the two loquacious parrakeets and the perfect location for all the main sites, then the Gabbia d'Oro is 'perfetto'. The bathrooms could do with an update and the lighting was too gloomy to read by but overall we loved our suite. We will certainly go back.

  • Liked — Quality antique furniture and colouful furnishings
  • Disliked — Not enough good light for reading, bathtub (jacuzzi) a bit ancient.
