This is the Verona city museum, and is filled with historical artefacts and some truly superb medieval and renaissance art. It's quite extensive, and if you have a rainy day, it's an entertaining place to visit.

We were fortunate in that our visit coincided with an exhibition of Igor Mitoraj sculpture which was an added plus to what is a wonderfully curated and presented collection within a superb Medieval castle historic site sensitively restored by the architect Carlo Scarpa, between 1959 and 1973. The exhibition is made especially accessible by the scale and layout of the Museo. It has an almost intimate feel whilst the natural light and airiness augments the viewing experience.
The attendants are polite & discreet, not at all overbearing as can be the case elsewhere.. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here and taking in the views of the river and the impressive scale of the Castle and its battlements all also made wonderfully accessible by a smart and sensitive restoration.

I loved the architecture of this place. It felt different to the many castles/churches we have seen but unless you are REALLY into religious art works, skip the inside. The armery section was interesting but no English interpretation on the artifacts in the cabinets which was a shame.

Don't miss a visit to this Museum. It is worth it just for the view from the ramparts you get of The Adige river and the mountain beyond. You get a fine view too of the Ponte Vecchio bridge which was an escape route when the castle was attacked from the town side of Verona.

We were extremely lucky as we had a guided tour by an architect friend. He really opened our eyes to the restoration work of the architect Carlo Scarpa which happened in the 1960's. Scarpa paid attention to the tiniest detail, including the fittings holding some of the art work. Even though Verona was extremely busy with tourists, the museum was quiet and never felt crowded. The old castle is a mix of influences from the various influences over the centuries, and I loved the juxtaposition of the old and the new that Scarpa has introduced.

We were lucky too that the weather was fantastic, which meant that the light falling in the galleries of the museum seemed to highlight the various sculptures and fixtures on display. When it is very hot, which it was, the coolness created by the extremely thick castle walls was very welcome!

There are steps to climb, so it may not be suitable for some people. We were there for a couple of hours, and didn't get to see everything in detail, so I strongly recommend giving it as much time as you can.

Visited Castelvecchio museum in September and had amazing views over Verona.

Inside was an interesting collection of old paintings and relics.

Definitely worth a visit, worth the views from the top on a sunny day.
