“Top class hotel complex on a hill overlooking the city”
Reviewed 27 February 2014

We stayed here around the New Year's festivities and have the best of impressions. The Fra Lorenzo is a secluded complex, up a hill from the Borgo Trento area of Verona, and you would best come by car. The views over Verona are astounding, service is top class, the hotel itself is very pleasant. The rooms are not overly large, but well laid-out. A nice touch was a small present at the end of the stay. Highly recommended.

Apparently there are some hotel association legal constraints about what qualifies in Italy has a "hotel". While officially this is a B&B, the service and amenities are those of an excellent boutique hotel.

The hilltop location has gorgeous, sweeping views of Verona. Hotel grounds are kept immaculately maintained. The hotel opened barely 6 months ago, and it's clear a lot of effort went into the renovations. They managed to maintain the beautiful, old architectural details (such as the beamed ceilings) and add in modern comforts elsewhere. There is also good FREE wi-fi throughout, with individual areas having their own routers so you can Instagram the hell out of the place and make your friends jealous that you're staying at such a beautiful property. They're savvy enough to know at this point that people will likely bring at least one mobile device on their trips.

Our room was cosy, but with quality furniture. The bed was just amazing. Great mattress (that was a proper large bed, not two singles pushed together), luxurious linens. Bathrooms have high-quality German fixtures, L'Occitane toiletries. The property throughout was very clean. It was far enough away from the center to be quiet and peaceful at night even sleeping with the windows open.

The breakfast buffet in the mornings was small but had good variety. Eggs and bacon, pastries, cheese, meats, juices, yogurts... There was even a selection of gluten-free foods offered.

The small bar off reception offered drinks and cocktails. Keep it simple if you order there. They thought a tequila sunrise was vodka and OJ (they didn't know about the grenadine "sunrise" part) but they did have a few good single malt scotches on offer such as Oban.

Service was great from start to finish. There's a caretaker on the property that stays overnight it you need anything after reception leaves. The owner apparently spent time in England and incorporates a lot of that into the hospitality, with touches such as tea service in rooms with beautiful porcelain cups.

Our second day we slept in and missed housekeeping and I asked if there was a second round. They said no. I told them it wasn't a big deal, but we'd love for some more bottled water to be brought to the room for after we got back from sightseeing. When we came back the room had, much to our surprise, been completely tidied. Bed made, vacuumed, fresh towels and toiletries. And water.

It's not in the center of town (you see a beautiful view of the whole town from there) and a bit of a hike back uphill when heading there, otherwise, it's a short cab ride or 20 minute walk.

We would definitely return again.

Room Tip: Rooms 2-5 have the best views and biggest windows.
