Not an hotel; not even B&B; a cramped room with a door directly off the street and vouchers for meagre breakfast in an unwelcoming hole round a back lane. This is a triumph of style over function: the poky room was dominated by a cast-iron 4-poster bed that left nowhere for suitcases; roughcast ceiling shed a covering of sand on bed; "mini-bar" contained a single bottle of water. Clear glass sliding door separating the bathroom required two to slide it; the afterthought blind was transparent. The "hydro massage" put out a dribble of water with adequate hot water for one shower only; I'm 6' and the mirror was too high even for me. We were entertained until 1.30am by families, dogs and motorbikes immediately outside our door; the motorbikes resumed their cacophany at 6am. When the proprietress eventually arrived to let us in she wanted two nights' payment in advance in cash, despite which we fled after only one night. Oh! The air con worked well.

This B&B is right in the heart of the old town, perfect for wandering around.
Our room was very clean with lots of charm but very small. It shares the staircase with local residents and the only window in the room opens to the corridor - not what you want for privacy.
My main problem with the room is that it is very damp; so damp that the sheets felt wet and I had trouble sleeping. There is a dehumidifier but we couldn't get it to work so turned the airconditioner on to dry to dehumidify the room, which seemed to work but took some time.
You receive a ticket for breakfast which you redeem just around the corner but unfortunately breakfast is coffee & croissant, which does seem to be quite typical all over Italy as we're finding.
All in all nicely located for sightseeing but I wouldn't stay there again.

We where in Bari for our honeymoon and expected to get excellent service and good B&B. We booked Abbazia Degli Svevi exectly 2 month earlier to be sure that there wont be any problem but... we got overbooking! So the manager told us that "we have problem" on the second day of our stay and "will find something to stay" (What he actually did, but we were so disappointed that didn't stay for another day in Bari).

First of all: the only good thing for this B&B is it's location, it's great, you are 3 minutes walk from San Nicola Cathedral and you are in historical center of Bari. Here all the good things ends and begins the reality.

When you arrive, you will get ugly, strange door, with notification, not to ring the door bell but call the phone. So if you are foreigner and have no phone, or have one that does not work in Italy, you are in big trouble.

There is no reception, there is Alfonso, whom you call and who speaks English. He is only person you can talk with, because there also is a woman, who does not understand single English word, so you have to use your hands a lot to explain what you want, or you have to call Alfonso, talk with him and then he will tell to her in Italian.

After this strange woman (or Alfonso) comes to open the door, you find yourself inside a narrow corridor with 3 rooms of B&B and steps which goes upstairs where other people live (and who don't like if you ring door bell) and these people are very, very noisy, especially in the morning (in our case, someone turned on the Italian songs at 08:00AM and was not only listening but also singing).

Two of the rooms does not have windows, one has and it goes out into the corridor. The room doors are made of plastic & glass and it's covered with thin curtain, so if you turn on the light in the room (and you have to, because of absence of windows) everything is visible outside of the room. Also the a lot of noise comes in the rooms because of this strange doors, so sleeping and having rest is not comfortable.

Our room was quite small with very strange square wall in it (you can see the photos). The actual view of the room is different from the professional photos, so don't be surprised, if you expect the luxury, old Italian, stone room and get something very strange. The walls where covered with white putty, and be careful to touch it, you will get white too (again see photos).

The most interesting thing was bath: it has no door, it has some kind of curtain... So everything you do in the toilet, can be heard outside (and not only heard). Also there was strange thing: when you turn on the bath light, the air vent also turns on. The problem with vent, is it's annoying sound. It's very noisy, so if you want go to the toilet at night, you will wake up everyone in the room.

The shower also has problems: first is that it has several modes, but none of them works correctly. Also the water flaws out of the bath tube an it's everywhere on the floor in the toilet. And the most terrible thing is that there is no central water heating, so the water is heated and kept in the tank, which is too small for to persons. So after taking a shower, we found out that there was no hot water left for my wife and she had to wait more than a hour.

Also problems with internet: you expect Wi-Fi, but we got short network cable, which you have to plug in your laptop and have to stay sitting on the chair as the cable is too short.

The breakfast is also very strange: you have to walk 3 minutes to get to some bar, show them the check (which you will be given by the strange Italian speaking woman up on your arriving) and you will get only cappuccino and one croissant for it.

Overall, we don't recommend this B&B because you don't get what you are expecting at all and you can get good hotel in this price in the same area.

When we arrived exhausted after a transatlantic flight and a transfer to Bari we were greeted at this place not by a live person but by a locked door and a sign with a phone number to call. Our phone was not then working in Italy and other residents of the building were not happy with out interruptions for help. We were stranded and went off to seek help elsewhere.
The place regarded us as a no-show and refused to give our money back.
