Although relatively small compared to other food markets we've visited it was worth visiting. Both the wine and food purchased was lovely.

We were in the fish restaurant in August, 2013 and were very disappointed.
Pros:
fresh food
Cons: and there are many :)
no menu, no prices beforehand;
hostile waitresses, personell is annoyed with non-italian speaking clients;
only one waitress speaking English;
noone took our order and we had to go the counter to do it ourselves;
everything was so slow, they always forgot something;
they forgot to bring a bill;
no care and no attention;
average food and overpriced;
uncomfortable chairs (very);
not a proper restaurant though the price claims otherwise.

Do not recommend until the managing style is changed.

Fab! We stumbled across the market on our first day in Alghero and VERY glad we did. It was around lunch time and the market was closing but the restaurant in the fish market was just getting going. We took a table and sat down. Chairs are plastic, table cloths are paper but its all brilliant. Full of locals and not much English spoken it was just what we like. We ordered white wine as that seemed to be what others had and we looked around to see what food was on offer. There is a menu but we decided to go to the counter and point at what we wanted. It was all great. We ordered raw mussels by mistake but gave them a go - like oysters. It was Sea Urchin season so we ordered that too as well as a few other bits. The fried, flour dusted fish seems to be the local option. Service isnt quick ( but that makes it a good excuse to drink more wine) but dont let that put you off. So good we came back the next day and could have done again the next day too if it hadnt been closed.

I cannot find an option to review Old Town of Alghero, so I'll do it here with the Central Market.

Do not, by any means, miss old town. We took a tour on a little train and it was delightful. The history behind this area is fascinating and very old. Well worth a day spent in Old Town. We ate at a restaurant facing the marina (where you sign up for all the boating trips), I think it was Neptune's Restaurant? But it was fantastic and they treated our kids like a King and Queen.
