After 11 years of holidaying in Italy, I’m finally motivated to put a review on Trip Advisor. Put simply, my wife and I love this hotel.
We stayed here in 2008, although the edge was slightly taken off a really great holiday by having to find somewhere to eat in Alghero each evening, waiting ages between courses, waiting ages for the bill etc. On the last day of our visit in 2008, we had lunch in the hotel just before we left and it was the best meal of the week. We said that if we came back, we would eat in the hotel, and this year, we did exactly that.
As we hoped, the food in the restaurant was excellent; varied, plentiful and delicious, and presented to very high standards. All of the meals that we were served were better than we had in town in 2008 and I think eating in the hotel actually worked out to be a little less costly too. The breakfast restaurant also offered as wide a range of hot and cold food as we have seen anywhere else before. Espresso and cappuccino alike came hot and tasted great.
The service during our stay started with a completely unexpected bottle of sparkling wine, and remained impeccable throughout. Special mentions go to the delightful Silvana whose warm smile lit up all our evenings and to Marco, whose obvious enthusiasm and desire to be the model of efficiency was very endearing. All of the staff, from the restaurant to the reception desk, from the barman to the chambermaids, work hard to do their jobs courteously and efficiently. Quick word on prices; water, soft drinks, beer, ice creams – more or less unchanged in 5 years. A dependable Wi-Fi service was also provided for free too.
The hotel itself is extremely comfortable. Air conditioning seemingly throughout all internal communal areas, including all the corridors, provided respite when required from temperatures approaching 40C. The air-con system in our room was the simplest, most effective and quietest we have ever experienced. Like 2008, our modern room was spotlessly clean, well presented to a very high standard, and efficiently serviced every day. Plush carpeting and little touches such as solid dark wood coat hangers to match the wardrobe doors, add to the general feel of luxuriousness.
The view from our balcony, and indeed from any sea-facing area of the hotel, was amazing. The hotel is in a beautiful spot, just across the road from the crystal clear sea. If you don’t like sandy beaches, and if you are fairly fit and steady on your feet, wander over and join the locals sunbathing on the rocks, and snorkelling in the sea. €15 will buy you a perfectly adequate mask and snorkel, and you might also need some reasonably robust flip-flops or suchlike, although with a bit of care, you’ll soon be close up to some pretty varied and colourful fish only a few feet from the shore.
That’s not to say that the swimming pool area isn’t just as high quality as the rest of the hotel. The pool is large and never seems to be crowded. The life guards work hard to keep the area tidy, and to provide an efficient towel provision service.
Alghero itself is a lovely town, which is best enjoyed after you have eaten a fabulous meal in your hotel, and not whilst you are wandering around trying to find somewhere you like the look of to eat. Check out the Girasol bar, which is possibly the most appealing looking spot in town, with its candlelit tables, from where you can watch local and tourist alike enjoying the passeggiata. The service here is also excellent, as is the choice of long drinks and cocktails. We recommend the ‘Joghi’...delicious!
So, tips for an unforgettable holiday:
1. Go to Alghero.
2. Stay at the Carlos V.
3. Eat at the Carlos V.
4. Don’t leave 5 years between your visits. We won’t this time.
