“Stay here. EAT here. It IS a wonderful hotel.”
Reviewed 6 August 2013

After 11 years of holidaying in Italy, I’m finally motivated to put a review on Trip Advisor. Put simply, my wife and I love this hotel.

We stayed here in 2008, although the edge was slightly taken off a really great holiday by having to find somewhere to eat in Alghero each evening, waiting ages between courses, waiting ages for the bill etc. On the last day of our visit in 2008, we had lunch in the hotel just before we left and it was the best meal of the week. We said that if we came back, we would eat in the hotel, and this year, we did exactly that.

As we hoped, the food in the restaurant was excellent; varied, plentiful and delicious, and presented to very high standards. All of the meals that we were served were better than we had in town in 2008 and I think eating in the hotel actually worked out to be a little less costly too. The breakfast restaurant also offered as wide a range of hot and cold food as we have seen anywhere else before. Espresso and cappuccino alike came hot and tasted great.

The service during our stay started with a completely unexpected bottle of sparkling wine, and remained impeccable throughout. Special mentions go to the delightful Silvana whose warm smile lit up all our evenings and to Marco, whose obvious enthusiasm and desire to be the model of efficiency was very endearing. All of the staff, from the restaurant to the reception desk, from the barman to the chambermaids, work hard to do their jobs courteously and efficiently. Quick word on prices; water, soft drinks, beer, ice creams – more or less unchanged in 5 years. A dependable Wi-Fi service was also provided for free too.

The hotel itself is extremely comfortable. Air conditioning seemingly throughout all internal communal areas, including all the corridors, provided respite when required from temperatures approaching 40C. The air-con system in our room was the simplest, most effective and quietest we have ever experienced. Like 2008, our modern room was spotlessly clean, well presented to a very high standard, and efficiently serviced every day. Plush carpeting and little touches such as solid dark wood coat hangers to match the wardrobe doors, add to the general feel of luxuriousness.

The view from our balcony, and indeed from any sea-facing area of the hotel, was amazing. The hotel is in a beautiful spot, just across the road from the crystal clear sea. If you don’t like sandy beaches, and if you are fairly fit and steady on your feet, wander over and join the locals sunbathing on the rocks, and snorkelling in the sea. €15 will buy you a perfectly adequate mask and snorkel, and you might also need some reasonably robust flip-flops or suchlike, although with a bit of care, you’ll soon be close up to some pretty varied and colourful fish only a few feet from the shore.

That’s not to say that the swimming pool area isn’t just as high quality as the rest of the hotel. The pool is large and never seems to be crowded. The life guards work hard to keep the area tidy, and to provide an efficient towel provision service.

Alghero itself is a lovely town, which is best enjoyed after you have eaten a fabulous meal in your hotel, and not whilst you are wandering around trying to find somewhere you like the look of to eat. Check out the Girasol bar, which is possibly the most appealing looking spot in town, with its candlelit tables, from where you can watch local and tourist alike enjoying the passeggiata. The service here is also excellent, as is the choice of long drinks and cocktails. We recommend the ‘Joghi’...delicious!

So, tips for an unforgettable holiday:

1. Go to Alghero.
2. Stay at the Carlos V.
3. Eat at the Carlos V.
4. Don’t leave 5 years between your visits. We won’t this time.

Stayed 2 weeks in July & hard to find any fault.

Well-staffed so all areas of hotel exceptionally clean & well -maintained. Good leisure facilities : pool, tennis court & gym. Room (at rear of hotel overlooking garden) was spacious & very comfortable.
Very enjoyable & relaxing stay. No complaints at all.

This my last night in Alghero, and my Stay at this wonderful Hotel... I am what I would describe as an awkward customer I guess after worked in the travel & tourism buisiness.

I travelled with my Partner and my friends and there teenage son, on arrival at the hotel at 10.15pm it was extremely dark outside, we checked in without a hitch both the check in staff and the porter were fantastic ... Very friendly... The Hotel is spotless very well maintained, both inside and out ....gardens and pool area. And fantastic views from the bar area.

On first impression walking into the room was that it was lovely ..spacious ... Clean , I drew back. The curtain to look out for my sea view and was shocked to see the pool, thinking they'd had made a mistake I called reception to complain, they tried to explain that it would be a sea view and asked to wait till morning as they were fully booked and if I wasn't happy I would be moved, to my delight the following morning the view was fantastic.... Sea and Pool view one word Amazing.( Felt a little silly about moaning)

Breakfast was very nice, a little something for everyone including fresh fruit and eggs to order, although at times I could see a queue I never had to wait for my poached eggs as we went for breakfast around 8.30. Like the previous review has stated Coffee was sub standard for Italy often cold, however my Partner and friends started to order cappuccino and that seemed to be the better option.
Dinner as we were on half board was a little hit and miss but if things were not up to standard they were dealt with directly and rectified where possible. Enrico very attentive.
Bar area was clean and well looked after... Antonio spoke very well and always had a smile and I must say that people have moaned about the prices but I think they were extremely reasonable for a hotel bar of any rating let alone a 5 star.

The gym looked very well equipped although I did use it.... it opens till late

The pool was always clean .. And a sun lounger always available with nice soft clean towels provided daily, no tacky poolside games, but a little soft music would of been nice.
The only problem I would say I had was that I asked for a kettle in the room, and was charged 10 Euros for a tea tray, I was not told there was a cost, perhaps informing first would of been the best idea as it seemed a little steep as I only used 2 tea bags.
Although the hotel does not do a transfer they can arrange this for you, also exceptional service.

All in all its a lovely place to stay, after working in the travel industry I can be a little picky but I would stay here again should I go to the area.

Dear Kathrin,

we thank you for your kind comments, for the great review and for your compliments to our staff.
We are glad that you will want to come back to our hotel during your next trip to Alghero.
We are really pleased that it was a memorable vacation for someone working in the field.
We are very sorry for your complaint concerning the kettle, we're sure it was just a misunderstanding, in any case prices are always available on the information booklet in the room.
The price is 10€ per week, it does not matter how many tea or coffee you drink.
Looking forward to welcoming you again,

greetings from all of us.

The hotel was clean and the rooms were of a high standard. We had an enjoyable stay at the hotel and we made good use of the pool area after beach or town visits. The coffee/tea at breakfast did not have a good taste and was cold on occasions. There was also queues for the eggs/omelettes but the choice and quality of breakfast food was otherwise good. Alghero town was pleasant and restaurants were of a good standard. You need a car or bus go get to the better beaches .

Our experience of 5* Resort Hotels has often been very disappointing, however the Carlos V Hotel was a breath of fresh air. The Hotel would not qualify as a fully fledged European 5* but is definitely a truly great hotel and well above a 4* standard for lots of reasons.
It would be hard in fact to fault it. It's location, it's rooms (sea view), it's facilities and particularly the staff made our stay a truly relaxing 7 day break.
What also stood out for us was the restaurant, for both breakfast and dinner. We spent a lot of time and money looking for good food in Alghero and came to the conclusion that although there are some good restaurants in the old town, the Imperial Restaurant in the hotel was by far the best value and the staff were excellent.
This was a important trip for us, where we hooked up with my family from Vancouver. This was flagged to Macello, the Duty Manager well in advance and he did not disappoint. Well done!

Room Tip: Sea View Room is best, although our experience indicated that the standard of all the rooms was very...

First time in Sardinia and Alghero. Generally happy with Carlos V although slightly disappointed by "side sea view" which was just about a sea view if you stretched your head right out over the balcony so not worth the extra money really just a view of the pool and houses adjacent to hotel. Even if you have breakfast included in your rate they will charge you for breakfast in your room not just tray charge but for whole meal. We didn't realise this when ordering but found it had been added to our bill at the end and the girl at the front desk couldn't remove the charge. Breakfast in the hotel restaurant was excellent and the waiters were friendly and professional. The hotel is in a good location with about a 20 minute walk along the sea front into the city centre which is really pretty and has fantastic food. The bar by the pool does great cocktails and the whole outside area and terrace gets loads of sun.

Room Tip: Don't bother with a side sea room if your expecting a sea view although they maybe slightly larg...

Dear Guest,
thanks for having shared with us your experience at The Hotel CArlos V,
thanks for the kind compliments on our Hotel and services.
About the breakfast we always say this is included when having it in the restaurant, we are sorry if the charge disappointed you but this service is an extras, dedicated only for you, in the leaflets in the room is cleary stated the costs of this service, it takes time and one waiter at least for satisfy your request, if it would be free of charge and everyone would ask for breakfast in the room??? 100 wateirs would not be enought! Anyway you could ask for the price just to not have any surprise.
The side sea view is called SIDE just because the sea is in your left side, otherwise you wish to open the window and see the ocean in front of you, then ask for a FRONT sea view. At the Hotel Carlos V work in the name of clearness and transparency, and we are pleased to inform our guests of the exact type of rooms so that they can consciously choose the perfect location for their relax.
Hoping to welcome you again in a front sea view room
Best regards

Location: far enough away from the 'tourist' part of the city to be quiet, but not too far to be inconvenient. 20 min walk gets you into the centre of town

Cleanliness: fabulous (and I'm a cleanliness freak !!), really cannot fault it, the rooms and all communal areas are immaculate!

Food: restaurant food not bad, and reasonably priced. Huge selection at breakfast.

Staff: all friendly and helpful

Value for money: really good.

I've been travelling for 25 years, and I would say that this is one of the better hotels I've stayed in for the price range - would definitely recommend it
