The hotel has a very good location close to a (relatively) uncrowded part of beach and with walking distance (15-20 minutes) to old town. Clear calm water at beach. Very nice view from our balcony on 3rd floor facing beach. Very serviceminded staff. Nice pool area. Good breakfast.
Only one suggestion- it would have been nice to be able to fix your own coffe/ tea in the room.
Bring mosquito repellant (of course not specifically for this hotel)

Room Tip: If you want a nice view facing sea ask for a room on 3rd (highest) floor.

Just returned from a week at the hotel and found the staff very helpful and efficient. The food was of a very good standard with a fine selection on all three courses.Rooms and main areas were spotless and the pool area very well laid out .Family were always available and ate the same meals in the same restaurant as every one else.A nice 20 min stroll along a palm lined walk by the sea to the beautiful town of Alghero which was even more alive at night.

First, confusion, Expedia show a Hotel Riviera in Alghero which is NOT this one, I suspect all the photographs are of a different hotel.
The Alghero is well situated within walking distance of the very interesting town and also a superb beach which is far better than the one 100 yards from Hotel.A bus stop is also nearby,
The single room was not large, but quite large enough for one person and had a balcony with side view of the sea. The swimming pool is large for a 3 Star Hotel and well equiped with sunbeds.
Sardinian food regional and the Riviera meals are representative of the area and very good, the wine list is very restricted but reasonably priced, €15 a bottle max.
Like most hotels the Riviera has its quirks, no WiFi ( although I found 2 bars with the facility 5 min walk away) and as other have remarked shampoo etc.is not replenished so take some.
The English owner is a charming lady with an Italian family around her.The staff appeared to be cleaning non-stop, everything was spotless.
The whole experience was delightful and so much more enjoyable than some large impersonal establishment, as a single traveller I found everyone, staff & fellow guests very friendly. .

Room Tip: Some people may find the rooms overlooking the pool, with no balconies a little quieter although I pr...

We've just returned from a week at the Hotel Riviera. From the offset we were welcomed & made to feel at home. The staff are extremely efficient & friendly,& continually aim to please. We had three choices of starter & main course each evening & the food was very good & varied to suit all tastes. We did feel that 8.00pm was a tad late though & some background music in the dining room would have added to the ambience somewhat.Breakfast was substantial with a choice of cereals, cold meats, yoghurts, breads & fruit. We did have a couple of wet days where it became necessary to have lunch at the hotel & again we were given many choices. If you get a chance, take the big red bus tour as the scenery is wonderful & the trip was delightful. If we went there again,we would hire a car so as to explore the other areas.

Room Tip: A balcony is very useful to have

We have just returned from a week at the Riviera.I have stayed there once before a few years ago. We enjoyed our stay very much again. The hotel is in a very good location for the beach and the town. The hotel is family owned and run and they couldn't have been more helpful and friendly during our stay. The atmosphere is relaxed and informal.
All areas of the hotel were very clean and our room was more than satisfactory. There was a good choice of meals each day and we particularly liked this style of typical Italian food.
We would certainly like to visit this area again and will definitely stay at the Riviera.

The photos on the Thompson website make it look a lot nicer than it is! When we came into our room, the light was falling out of the socket, the shower was dirty and the room was overall unsatisfactory for a 3 star and what the pictures portray.

When we first arrived, we had to wait 3 hours before we could even get into our room and once we did we were obviously very disappointed with the standard of the hotel. When we went to complain, the English lady that owns the hotel couldn't be bothered to listen to us and got an irate Italian man to yell at us. We were able to get the staff to look at the issues but unfortunately they didn’t speak any English and just laughed at us and kept saying this is what it is. The Thomson rep wasn't much better with her saying 'This is Sardinia what did you expect? Didn't you read the reviews online?' The Owner of the hotel even said to our rep that we should just leave the hotel as she couldn't be bothered to deal with us. We looked into moving to another hotel but we couldn’t because Thompson would have charged us £300 for moving on top of the other hotel fees. Apparently the Hotel Riviera has a ridiculous cancellation policy so if you don’t like the hotel you still have to pay for your whole stay! So basically they said we would have to pay something like an extra £700 each if we wanted to move hotels. We only paid about £600 pp in the first place. We were essentially stuck in this hotel.

They then ‘upgraded’ us to basically the same room but with a small balcony. It was marginally better except it had the same issues as the previous room! There was a very large glass light which was hanging just by the wires again over the bed… Honestly this concerned us as it was heavier than the last and if it fell there could have been some serious injuries. The bathroom was still below standard and dirty. As this complaint took us into the 3rd day of our holiday, we decided not to take the complaint any further (mainly because the hotel wouldn’t do anything and Thompson just wouldn’t help us either).

The food at the hotel was bland and very standard. Even though we booked half board, we didn’t end up eating there for dinner. The food did not look very appetising and was just pizza. We had breakfast there which was again pretty standard except for the cook who was downstairs singing so loudly that you couldn’t even speak to the people you were eating with. Also there is a balcony area where you can eat but for some reason they had the sewage next to the tables open! The first day we thought it was because they were trying to fix something but it was like that the whole time so I think they just leave it open. Also because they leave the food right next to the door there were flies all over it making it less appetising. I was unsure why in August they didn’t have anything covering the food.

The time we went it was an Italian bank holiday and the beach near the front of the hotel was packed. It was a nice beach but so busy. There’s a nicer beach which you can go to on the Red Bus Tour. It’s called Mugoni Beach, there’s loads of places to get food and the water is beautiful. There’s a hotel there that I would strongly recommend considering if you do go on holiday to Sardinia. Hotel Corte Rosada had its own private beach and we had a walk around the grounds, it’s definitely a hotel that would be classed a 3 or 4 star hotel to normal English standards.

Also the old town which is about a 20 minute walk away from Hotel Riviera had some lovely
restaurants and really comes alive at about 10pm. There was a carnival and a boatyard where they had loads of excursions. We went to Neptunes Grotto on a boat which was a really nice activity. They run every hour so it’s easy to plan your day around it.

There’s a cute train tour of the town that takes about an hour and you see the whole town. It helped us find some nicer restaurants and other areas to walk and explore. As mentioned before, we went on the Red Bus Tour which was pretty good value for money. There are beautiful views if all you do is sit on the bus. There are a lot of beach stops so I’d suggest if you’re looking for a quieter location, then choose some good ones on there.

Overall, apparently in Sardinia a 3 star hotel is more like a 1 star for English standards. Definitely go if you want a beachy hotel with some interesting things to do but STAY AWAY FROM THIS HOTEL as it will tarnish your view of the whole place! I would also suggest not going with Thomson… the only hotels they have in the area of alghero are the same standard to this one! They said to us that this is the reason why they wouldn’t help us further, that and the ridiculous cancellation policy that was imposed.

Room Tip: All of the rooms are the same so if you don't like one it will be exactly the same!

we enjoyed the company of the other guests as it had a family atmosphere. At breakfast we chose our dinner menu each day and liked the italian food. The sunbeds at the pool are the best in the area as we checked all hotels nearby.Room was fine but bathroom very small and it would be best to pay for an upgrade.Big red tour bus was a good drive around the area.Hotel is an easy walk into town past the marina.Good for all ages.

Room Tip: pay extra for upgrade and balcony.
