Owner description: This open-air market in Sardinia's principal city is noisy, busy, colorful and lots of fun.

Love, love, love this place... it's rumored to be the largest indoor food market in Italy and a must see for any visitors to the South of Sardinia.

Upstairs is full of fruit, veg, cheeses, hams, bread and meat and I always spend a fortune and come away with bags overflowing with pecorino, wild boar prosciutto, courgette flowers and yellow peaches. Downstairs is where the fun really begins... the freshest fish and seafood you'll ever find and it seems every stall holder is a showman, ready to wear a swordfish head as a mask, pose for photos or shake a live octopus or two in your direction.

Visit it early in your holiday so you have plenty of time to cook all those gorgeous ingredients... it's too heartbreaking to go and not be able to buy it all because you're leaving the next day! It's closed on Sundays, the fish section is almost empty on Mondays but every other day it's lively and fun. Try to get there by 10am at the latest to get the freshest produce. And don't forget to bring your camera!

An absolute MUST for every Cagliari visitor. Be sure to go tues to sat mornings until 13hrs as the must-see fish market does not open on mondays. Great to walk through the overcrowded but secure aisles full of fresh fruit, vegetables and meat. Great deals just before the closing bell around 14hrs

We love to visit these marketplaces while in a mediterranean country and during a visit I always think 'too bad I don't have a good kitchen available here to start cooking with all these marvellous fresh ingredients!' and of course this was the case again in Cagliari!

We also visited the marketplace in Quartu S. Elena and in Iglesias, but this one is bigger, more to see!

It has two floors, so don't forget the basement: that's the best part! That's where the fishes are, and lobsters, and clams and sea slugs and ... and... and the marketers love to show of their products, which provides you with beautiful pictures.

Go in the morning, when most of the goods are still unsold.
