Description: The Trattoria Moderna " Il Mattacchione" is a small restaurant located in the north part of Olbia, not far from the main road that take you to the harbor, to the airport and to Costa Smeralda. In this small family-run trattoria, with about 35 seats inside and other 35 seats outside(only during the summertime),you will be greeted with courtesy and professionalism. In the trattoria " Il Mattacchione" you can dive into the Sardinian's culinary tradition, reviewed with the eyes of a young couple,Giuseppe and Rossella, who have a deep love for their land and for all the products it offers. And so driven by a strong passion for food and for cooking, that Giuseppe will make you healthy meals prepared with fresh ingredients. Quality, professionalism and courtesy are the keywords of the Trattoria Moderna "Il Mattacchione".

We waited around this area for a few hours to try this place after some very positive reviews from fellow trip advisor reviewers.

However, we left disappointed. Everything is served in disposable plates, cups, forks and knives and makes you feel like more in a McDonald's than a proper eating establishment.

I would have been prepared to overlook all this if the food was better but it wasn't.

We opted for the special that day which was around 14 euros for 3 courses each. The pasta dish was assured of being fresh and it was. However, there was hardly any Sardinian sausage which was described as the focal point of the dish.

The main course was pretty small and basically was British beef bought out of a supermarket the slices you have in a lunch sandwich with a mild gravy on the top and a few small potatoes. Pretty poor compared to some of the roasts I can make at home.

Desert was pineapple tiramisu but it ended up just being a bowl of cream with not much else.

Wasn't as cheap as I thought and we wouldn't recommend this place at all. Bar Malp at the bottom of the road at lunch time was 10 times of this place and a fraction of the cost.

Fantastic food and great service at this unnassuming restaurant...complete with plastic plates and self service.
'Waitress (but she remains behind the bar) is one of the freindliest people we met in sardinia.
Food is cheap and amazing value... fresh fish, gamba asparagus pasta,deserts...

Must visit!!!!

we had two "paninis". the meat was excellent as was the home-made bread. we didn't wait too long for the food to come out and we were served to our table.

We stopped by this excellent little find last week for dinner (June 2012) after some locals recommended it to us for a real taste of Sardinia. On offer was an excellent range of traditional dishes the region has to offer, presented in the most relaxed (gastronomia) style - think Deli style eatery with 5 star freshly cooked food. The couple that run the place were so warm and friendly and speak perfect English, combine that with the food and before we knew it we were back for a second time on our 3 day trip! Couldn't recommend this place enough.

If you are staying in Olbia you must pop by this place. And not just because of the great food and atmosphere - Rossella, the girl who runs the place is an absolute pleasure to chat to. Ask her about the traditional dishes that Il Mattachione's menu has plenty of and you will not just get the most informative response in perfect English (or very good Danish!) but also the directions to the best nearby beaches. Try a slice of horse if you are courageous enough - real Sardinian specialty and don't forget to order Siadas or amazing homemade Tiramisu for dessert!
