“Good base for exploring but basic facilities”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 June 2012

Similar to others, we swapped this for our usual timeshare in Gran Canaria. This resort provides a good base for exploring the north east of the island, a car is essential (agree that the directions need to be greatly improved, we only found the resort due to printing maps from Google - otherwise we would have had no hope!). The facilities at the resort itself are quite basic. We stayed in early season so there were a few problems also - a noisy water system that woke us up when another flat turned on water, the shower hose broke (but was quickly fixed) and the bathroom door did not fit the door frame. There is an introductory session but the host was only keen on selling tours and half board - did not answer questions about the weather, attractions further away etc. I would only recommend if you are looking for a base to explore from, it is not a resort for enjoying during the day.

We swopped our 5 star Marriott studio for what we expected to be similar at La Fenice. The accommodatio would have been small for an hotel room, only one chair so we had to sit on the bed and no table so eating in was impossible. Cooking facilities were ridiculous, just two gas burners, no toaster, no microwave, no coffee maker etc. The bathroom was basic with a tiny shower cubicle. The water heater was noisy and the only solution was to turn it down so we only had warm water. The staff only seemed interested in selling their food packages. On the plus side the situation is lovely and the pool was a good size, but if you want comfort I would find somewhere else to stay.

It was dark when my husband and I arrived from Civitavecchia by ferry and picked up our rental car. The directions given by Interval International were totally inadequate and we got horribly lost for almost two hours. None of the locals had even heard of the place and our cell phone coverage was spotty. By the time we managed to phone the resort and they came and got us, I was in tears. Even in daylight and armed with a map, it's a confusing place to find. Fortunately, the staff are friendly and the grounds and pool attractive. Our rooms were spotless, but the kitchen was minimally equipped...no oven or microwave and a tiny refrigerator. Sardinia is a gorgeous island and once out of the cities, it's easier to navigate by car. (However, the resort staff got lost 4 times attempting to lead a caravan of guests to the Nuraghe Romanzesu. But as the resort has just opened the previous week for the season, this may explain their confusion). I would go back to Sardinia again in a heartbeat but would stay in a more accessible location and unless you plan to spend all your time onsite, don't even consider La Fenice without a car.

We stayed at La Fenice after swapping in a time share.

It is a small, friendly resort with a really lovely pool. When we were there it was very quiet and we virtually had the pool to ourselves. It's situated in the hills, so one side looks out onto mountain (the only sound is the gentle ring of the bells round the sheeps necks as the farmer leads them down the mountain) the other towards the sea. It was very quiet and peaceful - pitch black and night and great for seein the stars!

Some of the staff don't speak English, or very good English, so it would be useful to have a few Italian phrases, although we got by OK.

The resort is quite isolated - you definitely need a car. It is near other houses but there is no shop nearby or any activities. I suppose they might be able to book you a taxi but it's definitely not on a main road! The restaurant on site has very set meal times and in the evenings serves a set menu. We didn't eat there, preferring to cook for ourselves or eat out, wherever we had been that day. Worth mentioning that cooking facilities are limited to 2 gas rings though!

In terms of the surrounding area, I think Olbia gets a pretty rough ride on the Sardinia forums! True, it's not the prettiest and to reach the hotel you have to drive through a maze of industrial estates (although the signposting is pretty good) but we found some lovely places within an easy drive. And it's so convenient for the airport too. Olbia has some lovely old streets to wander down and the area near the port has bars and cafes to sit out at near the water.

Pittulongu beach is sandy and long and literally about 10 minutes drive. Porto Cervo is worth visiting just to see how the other half live! And there's some lovely islands worth visiting.

So in short, if you have the opportunity to visit La Fenice as a timeshare exchange I'd go, as for the money (we paid £100 for the whole week) it was well worth it. However if you'd be paying normal rates, I expect (although we didn't look to confirm this) there may be places that would offer you more convenience, if not more facilities, for your money.
