“Worth seeing”
Reviewed 30 April 2014

Catania best attraction. Not as stunning as many other sites in Europe, but it's intimacy is its benefit. We were on our own throughout our tour .....and you can't say that about Taormina! do see it if you are in town.

“Why don't they take better care?”
Reviewed 6 January 2014 via mobile

A hidden gem in Catania, but unfortunately bad kept, dirty, bad signalization, dangerous paths for not well-footed. Employees not very kind or helpful (typical Italian state-employee).
It's a real shame, because this place could be so much more, not only the theater but also the Odeon. Instead of cleaning paths and making certain corners accessible they just close them and still have the audacity of asking €6 as entrance fee. But then again: That's Sicily. Not aware of their heritage and it's importante for the presente and future.

“Unique up-close ampitheatre for exploration.”
Reviewed 4 January 2014

This Roman archeological building is a great opportunity to explore up close and wander at will. It was virtually empty of visitors in mid-December, so you don't feel rushed and can imagine the theatre in use 2,000 years ago. Some modern exhibits juxtaposed at the entrance an a small museum in an upper gallery. The recent incursion of local urban housing in the past 300 years has done damage, but adds another story authentic to Catania. Signs say no photos in some areas.

“A pleasant surprise”
Reviewed 22 December 2013

deceptive shop-front like entrance that could easily be dismissed. A pleasant surprise into the old teatro romano.

“Superb theatre - but a lack of information”
Reviewed 13 November 2013

This theatre is spectacular and well worth a visit. It was fairly deserted when I was there and I was able to wander around left to my own devices. There are notice boards, but if you don't speak Italian, I am afraid the English translations are very literal and not at all fluent. Even as an Italian speaker though, I felt that there was so much more potential for good information and bringing the theatre to life. I felt that such a superb site deserved much better. But still worth going - you just need to engage your imagination fully!
