We really liked being able to see native plants and being able to chat with someone who knew about them. Good to see the gardens being used by hordes of noisy schoolchildren!

This small Botanical Garden is located in the heart of Catania between Via Etnea and Via Antonino Longo, and is now hemmed in by high-rise apartment buildings that over-look it. This prevents any expansion of the site. Easiest access is to take the Metro train to Borgo, and to walk downhill on Via Etnea to the garden's gates on your right, which have a limited opening time.
The gates on the opposite side of the gardens in Via Antonino Longo are open most hours for the University students and staff.
The gardens established in 1858 have a remarkable collection of cacti from all over the world, and all are catalogued in a very professional way. Some are growing in the soil in open-air beds, while others are in huge glass-houses that have specialised mechanical ventilation and air conditioning equipment connected to control the air movement, temperature and relative humidity.
There are also over 100 specimens of palms growing in the gardens taken from their overseas natural habitats.
All the gardens are well laid out, exceptionally clean, and easily accessible by young, elderly and infirm people.
The gardens are used as a teaching facility for the "Dipartimento di Botanica" of the University of Catania. There is more detailed information on the Internet.
I recommend these gardens to all people as a relaxing diversion to the noise, rush and bustle of Catania, and will fill in a few hours if waiting for trains or flight departures.

This was close to our hotel, the San Max, but the entrance is on a parallel street. What a lovely place ; so many plants and trees from all over the world, impressive fountains, birds singing. You could spent an enjoyable hour here for 6 euro for 2 tickets, 4 euro for 1.

Great place to visit for exotic plant photos, and all clearly labelled.
Entrance is on Via Antonino Longo now and is reasonably priced.

Beautiful, but reasonably large, park with trees, cactuses, and fantastic flowers. We went here twice, and could come back again. Beautiful!
