Eating here is a wonderful experience. This is a fish shop in Catania fish market in the morning and fish restuarant at lunch time. The chef does not speak any english and you can choose between either fried fish or raw fish - we went for the fried which was gorgeous and you can also choose any fish from the fish counter and they will cook it up for you. Wine is also served!! A great friendly experience I cannot recommend highly enough - you simply must go if you can.

Giovanni's place, call it a trattoria or osteria is located right in Catania's fish market meters away from Piazza Duomo in Catania. A tiny place with maybe 1/2 a dozen tables inside and a couple upstairs. When you go inside what you see is fish and nothing but fish. Giovanni's family has had a fish market for many years and serving impeccably fresh fish to lunch time customers is a natural extention of what the family has done for generations. The fish is brought in every day. Some of it from the local fishermen caught that morning are still alive sitting on ice. No menu here, just look at the fish waiting to be eaten and point or tell Giovanni what you want. Better yet just let Giovanni make the selections for you and be fantastically surprised.

On one occasion I asked Giovanni if he had any scampi and he said tomorrow. The next day I got there to find the aquarium filled with live giant scampi swimming around the tank along with live lobster and other fish. Giovanni reached into the tank and pulled out 6 magnificant specimans from which he served me 3 raw and the other 3 cooked on the grill. Incredible! I also had some lightly grilled baby in the shell abalone which you'll find none better anywhere in the world. Still hungry Giovanni cooked me up about a pound of small shrimp which he sauteed in a pan with spumonte and some secret incredients, really, really good.

There is nothing fancy here and at times the service is a little rough but this is the genuine thing. Roll up your sleeves because a lot of what you eat you'll need to use your fingers with but you'll never have a better local fish experience anywhere in Italy. The only regret is that he doesn't open for dinner but perhaps sometime in the future he will. Total cost with wine for 2 people, 60 euro!

The fish market in Catania is a noisy attraction with very good products. At one of the market's corners we stumbled upon a little, simple looking restaurant. Much to our delight, the owner (one of three cooks behind the fish counter) prepared a fantastic dish of fresh, uncooked seafood and fish. Each item had its own dressing. The dish was extremely tasty and well prepares. We also had a dish of mussels and a beer. The cost was 26 Euros. For the quality of the food I would gladly have paid much more. Service is friendly.
I highly recommend this restaurant.

When the youngest of the Vittorio brothers decided to open a fishmonger with restaurant (well, a couple of tables for the time being, but he's expanding) in the middle of Catania's fish market, where the Vittorio family had sold fish for generation, the other brothers must have thought he was mad. And yet, little by little he's building a solid reputation for his raw fish platters. My wife had heard of this place even though we live in Paris. And Giovanni definitely honors the family tradition of excellence.

When it appeared clear that we'd gone there expressly to taste his famous platter, he dropped everything else and started an artistic preparation that culminated with the best raw fish platter ever: limpets, local wild oysters, sea bass, tuna, sea urchin, and no less than five type of raw shrimp, some carrying eggs. Vittorio likes to add spices to the fish, but I think he still needs to tune that properly. I.e. the spices were perfect, but he also added a couple of sauces which could have been withheld (at the end of the meal we discussed the platter and he agreed with us on that part). By the way, the dish was garnished with salad leaves and so on: at the end of our feast, only a few grains of pepper and some seaweeds (not all!) had been left. Finally, a big thumbs-up for friendliness! The platter (for two) was priced at 50EUR. For all that raw fish it doesn't seem like a lot, perhaps he gave us a special price - or perhaps Catania's price fish in the fish market are really competitive!

PS: I had to fight with TripAdvisor's content checker to post this review: I had initially written "fishmonger-X-restaurant" with X replaced by the latin term for "with" (this is standard English, as the first meaning for X in thefreedictionary reports), but the blasted content checker will think that X is nothing but a vulgar term. What cheek!
