The trip is really worthwhile, the Etna is, of course, overwhelmingly beautiful. So, go there, do the trip. But... check if it's possible to take a cab if you are a larger group, or rent a car. We paid € 100 for the two of us. We were cramped in a Jeep-like car and spent 2,5 hours (!) just picking up and taking back people from their hotels. So all in all, with all the pick ups, bringing back, having the "free Sicilian snack" and a coffee in a tourist dump, we spent about 2 hours on the Etna, within a 6 hour -otherwise boring- trip. Having said this, a bonus was the quarry we were shown, that was amazing.

Let's be clear, Mt Etna is impressive and beautiful, no doubt about it.

The question is if you need Geo Etna Explorer to see it...

According to the brochure we would be picked up from our hotel around 09:00 and be returned around 15:00. Given that the Crateri Silvestri are some 35 kilometers away, you'd expect to have 4.5 hours time to see the Etna.

The reality: pickup was at 08:30 and it took 1.5 hours to pick up the other passengers before we could start driving to the mountain. Same story on the way back, where we had the pleasure of spending again over one hour to drop of passengers before we were dropped of at our hotel at 14:30. We also lost an hour visiting a restaurant to get a "free" snack (what do you mean free snack, it was included in the fare....).

Conclusion: we had 2 hours out of 6 to see the Mt Etna, which was the reason to book the trip in the first place.... Oh, our guide was friendly enough, that was not a problem.

The trip costed us 100 Euros for 2. So, if you do the arithmetic: rent a car at Avis for a day, which sets you back 50 Euros. For the 50 Euros left over you can pay the 6 liters of petrol, a guide book, a decent lunch for 2 and still have money in your pocket... If you have a party of 3 or 4, well.....

The drive is really easy and you don't need a Land Rover to get up to the 2000 meter level.

I think you can now draw your own conclusion....

Had a wonderful time visiting Mt. Etna, my parents and myself. I would highly recommend Geo Etna, and we especially enjoyed our tour guide Fabio, who was very funny and has actually studied geology and can really speak in whatever level of detail interests you. The only issue was in riding in the back of the Land Rover, which started to get uncomfortable after a while. However, that kind of comes with the territory of taking a 4WD vehicle up a giant volcano! In any case, this tour was one of our highlights of a week in Sicily!

while staying in Acitrezza, near Catania, Sicily, we were recommended by hotel staff at Hotel Lachea to take the Mt. Etna tour with Geo Etna Explorer. We were picked up at the hotel by Sebastian in a huge Land Rover -it was a casual & relaxed day - stopping to see lava flows along the way, the Silvestri Craters at Etna, a house buried by lava, even doning helmets & flashlights to enter a cavern at Etna!! Our guide Sebastian was courteous and knowledgeable. The day ended with a stop in a local town for varieties of Arancini! make sure you wear comfortable shoes, runners or boots, and bring a jacket/sweater as the climate changes dramatically as you reach the summit! The cost per person was 45Euros, very reasonable. Highly recommend- do not miss!!

Being the only two English speakers in a group of eight on our excursion, we certainly felt that we were missing out on some of the explanations and answers to questions. This was a good trip however and we were treated to some excellent sights around Mount Etna.
