If you are in Catania, your pizza will be waiting for you at Gisira. When reviewing restaurants, pizza is a complex subject, and some technical expertise is necessary. The dough is left to rise for 24 hours, and little yeast is used. The result is great: the bottom is crunchy but the inside is absolutely soft, and bubbles of air can be seen, a sign of great rising. The smell of yeast is minimal. Some good craft beers, friendly staff, and the familiar setting with tables scattered in the street with the same name, make the whole experience authentic. The debate between high pizza from Naples and small from Rome fades away at every bite. Only could the tomato sauce be a little improved but ingredients are good.

With high hopes we went to Gisira Pizza today and with the current ranking and reviews on TripAdvisor we couldn’t have had higher expectations. Unfortunately this was not the case and hereby I would like to provide some constructive criticism for my low rating.

When we were seated we were offered a selection of drinks, which was the saving grace of the entire evening, which were excellent. The beer was excellent and the wine was good too, so far so good.

When the pizza came I was a bit surprised by the shape of my pizza, I had the Vulcano, which looked like a half calzone. The pizza was supposed to be spicy with spicy salami, the salami had little taste let alone any form of bite or spiciness to it. The cheese too seemed too of some lower supermarket quality and there was a lot of it in the half-calzone. Towards the end I felt like death by mediocre cheese and as I am writing this review one and a half hours after eating it, I am still looking for some relieve (where are my Rennies now?).
My girlfriend had the pizza called Rolle (could be spelled slightly different), which as the name describes it was a rolled up pizza like a giant burrito. There was only cheese in there, again of some lower supermarket quality, which had no flavor at all and some spicy oil had to be added to get some sort of flavor to it.
The thing that I think is too bad that the base of the pizza, the dough, is good, it’s really good. However by piling on high ingredients that are not on par with that it is ruining what could have been really good.

Service was ok, the girl who brought my (artisan) beer didn’t know anything about it or could tell me where it was from. When we were done we were rushed with the bill to pay and make space for the next customers even though we still had wine and beer.

Additionally when the waiting staff asked us if we liked the pizza we told them that we didn’t like the pizza. My girlfriend who is from the north of Italy, was told that they do pizza differently here in Catania and argued with us, what about the customer is always right?
