Excellnt temporary exhibition ‘From Giotto to De Chirico made this visit extremely worthwhile. Amazing exhibition space, lots of interesting local paintings and sculpture, some very ancient. Good close view of the city from the tower terrace. And a coffee machine to make your expresso while you admire the view!

A lot of paintings (many from 15th, 16th century if I remember correctly) many on religious themes. There is an audio guide which explains about the most significant pieces. Also a coin collection. Inside nothing of the old castle is on view.

Great collection of art with a focus on regional artists. Audio guide commenting several art pieces is included in the entrance. To many visitors, it seems absurd that such an impressive castle isn't the attraction in itself but merely a setting for a civic museum. In fact, you will find very little history and information about the castle. If you're coming mainly to explore the castle, see its architecture and learn about its history, you may be disappointed as this is mostly an art museum set in a 13th century castle. In fact, most walls are designed to showcase artwork so the original castle architecture is hidden.

I love history, I love art so I was satisfied but if you're mostly into medieval castles, I suggest that you walk around the building a few times, come inside and visit the interior courtyard (they will probably let you visit it for free without a ticket), take pictures and skip the entrance fee as you won't get much value inside as far as the castle is concerned. If you like art, however, come right in! Photography is allowed (no flash).

The castle is quite uninviting from the outside but it is worth trying as it houses an interesting collection of mainly local art from the antiquity to modernity. We were especially lucky to see a temporary exhibition which included the works of Giotto and a newly discovered painting by Caravaggio.

Inside this medieval museum there is a huge art gallery with exhibits from all the eras, with lots of Italian painters. It is a good place to visit during your stay in Catania.
