The area was quiet but convenient to walk to the major sites. The hotel has secure parking on site.

Our room was very interesting. . . surprisingly large with a beautifully tiled but oddly appointed bath. It had a separate tub and shower, but the shower was completely open, no curtain or curb or anything, just a shower head over a drain in this lovely bathroom. It did not have a bidet, but rather had a handheld sprayer hung on the wall next to the toilet. All functional, but a bit odd. As mentioned by others, the room was a bit dark and the control panel next to the bed that appeared to operate everything from the lights to the A/C was a little confusing or not completely functional. We had to inquire at the front desk for the air conditioning be switched on but the manager was very accommodating and friendly. Breakfast was typical but nice out on the terrace.

We booked the Hotel Royal primarily as a convenient hotel to enable us to drop off our rental car at Catania airport in the afternoon prior to a very early morning flight the next day, after a month's vacation elsewhere in Sicily and in Malta. Please note therefore our stay was very short and our experiences were not necessarily representative. It is interesting to note though that some some other reviewers have made similar observations e.g. the room lighting in the hotel far too dark for reading and very fiddly to operate. We ate at the hotel - an OK meal but accompanied by very slow service (I had to go to the kitchen to find the waiter in order for us to place our order) and ruined by a constant need to keep on personally closing the door to the nearby (cold) patio where a post-wedding party was getting underway.

Our dining experience should have forewarned us about what was to happen later in the evening. We went to bed almost immediately after dinner because of having to get up at about 5:00 the next morning to catch our plane to Canada, and were rudely awakened less than an hour after going to sleep by the wedding party which was actually taking place under our window. I eventually got up and went down to the front desk to enquire as to when the party might finish. Don't know if it was coincidence or not but it actually broke up about ten minutes later, allowing my wife and I to get about 3 hours sleep in total. Not what we had bargained for and, in our opinion the hotel who were informed of our need for an early morning departure at the time of booking and at check-in should have informed us that a party had been booked and offered alternative accommodation or suggested that we might like to check into another hotel.

Because of our early departure we asked the kitchen to prepare a take-out breakfast. Suffice it to say that MacDonald's does much better in this area and we aren't that impressed by what they produce.

One final observation: the central location of the Hotel Royal permitted us to enjoy some of the fabulous historical architectural magnificence of the city.

Room Tip: Just check whether there are any patio activities planned late into the evening and if there are. choose a room as far away from the area as possible or book at another hotel (of course you may want to join the party as an alternative).

Pleasant hotel. Friendly, helpful staff. Rooms a little on the dark side, but clean and tidy. Breakfasts adequate, but a bit samey. Didn't eat in resturant in evenings, so can't comment. Tried to on first night. Unknown to us, reserved table on same night as a political convention. Was not told when reserved table. Went out to eat from then on. Another point: half of pyjamas disappeared when bedding changed. Reported, but unable to locate. Information: safe is large enough to get other half of pajamas in. Pleasant, but small roof garden. Spa on roof garden not useable. Short walk to all main places of interest.

I booked because of the glowing reviews on Tripadvisor and reserved a suite with twin beds. One bed was huge, the other child sized. The bedroom lighting was so poor you couldn't read in bed and the hi-tech lighting swithched itself on in the night. Our sitting room was gloomy and inadequately furnished.
There is no bar or lounge, just a restaurant on the covered terrace, with a few chairs dotted around the edge, very bleak on a blowy night.

2 minutes walk to the centre of busy Catania but in a quiet location the perfect base from which to explore the city. A restored building situated on a tree lined steep street with off street parking in an inner gated courtyard. All the staff where very friendly, helpful and efficient - all spoke good English.
Very large, traditionally furnished room with a balcony and a large comfortable bed. Well equipped bathroom - shower no bath. All very clean.
Excellent breakfast taken on roof terrace - mainly covered but was warm enough to sit outside overlooking the bustling city.
Would certainly stay again if in Catania.
