Hotel Royal is in a perfect location for exploring the historic central district of Catania. It is a short walk to the Duomo, the colorful fish market, cafes.and Opera House. The hotel was comfortable with clean rooms attractively decorated. Free wifi with plenty of outlets for charging electronic. The rooftop patio was wonderful with great views over the historic area to enjoy while we ate one of the best included breakfasts on our entire trip.

We booked 3 nights here on the basis of reviews on this site and it came fully up to our expectations. The staff are most charming and helpful and the rooms comfortable and clean. The crowning glory, as others have said, is the rooftop terrace where one has dinner and breakfast. It has glass walls and a stiffened canvas dome top with plenty of room around the edges to sit outside, very lovely. But try to avoid a room in the taller part looking out over the terrace as they do have events there with music some evenings. The cold buffet breakfast is excellent with ham and cheese and good cakes and pastries. Food at dinner is very good and very well presented with excellent personal service and good local wines. For those with a car it has a secure internal courtyard for parking. The only quirk is that my Garmin SatNav denies all knowledge of the road it is in, the Via Antonino di Sanguiiano - so put in the cross street 37 Via Crociferi. Also beware the traffic on the way to the airport, only 15 minutes drive in theory but you can be stuck for an hour in the middle of Catania. Altogether a very pleasant experience.

The hotel sits atop one of the biggest hills in Catania overlooking the city. The hotel staff all spoke English and were very helpful. The breakfast is included in the stay and is good. The room was beautiful.

This hotel was located just off Via Etna which is one of the main streets in the historic part of Catania. It has a beautiful rooftop deck with spa (although we were only staying overnight to get to the Aeolian islands so we didn't get a chance to use it). The views from the rooftop were of Mt Etna and Catania and were wonderful.
Our room (which cost only 59 Euros for the night) had a firm king size bed and was tastefully decorated in traditional Sicilian style.
The first level restaurant also had great views with tables both inside in the air conditioning and outside. The breakfast was a fresh wide ranging continental breakfast with very good coffee.
The staff were very friendly and exceptionally helpful ( thanks Illias for helping with the cost of the taxi to the airport and trip to Mt Etna). The staff were multi lingual and made our first day in Sicily much easier in view of the fact that we only spoke very little Italian.
(Just as an aside, when we caught a taxi from the airport to Hotel Royal, we watched as the taxi driver put on the metre to ensure that we didn't pay too much. However, when we got to the hotel it was a cost of 40 Euro rather than the 24 Euro including bags that we were later told it should have cost!!)
This hotel is close to everything that you need or want to see in the main part of Catania and is a pleasant and comfortable place to stay.

I liked the hotel and its situation but, above all, I liked the terrace where one has breakfast and dinner and the truly exceptional cuisine. The maitre d'hotel is the refined and cultivated Faisal Zidane. We stayed only two nights and met him on the first evening, when we went to have a drink. The next day, having seen the very interesting menu, we decided to have dinner, even though I normally do not have dinner in hotels. It was by far the best meal we had in Sicily, refined, fresh, original and not overabundant. The price of 25 euros for 4 courses was also exceptional. Faisal advised us and introduced us to the brilliant young chef, Lucia Franzo, who deserves to be named next to Ciccio Sultano and the young man from Licata to the pantheon of young Sicilian chefs. I am Italian, and difficult about food, by the way.

We recently stayed at the Royal Hotel in central Catania and would have no hesitation recommending it to anyone.
We stayed in the Norma suite and fell in love with the over the top decor and the magnificent painted ceilings, the soft furnishings, the four poster with silk organza curtains, the enormous bathroom and the delightful dressing room. We could have stayed a lifetime!!!
As well as the great accommodation I must commend the management and staff of the hotel - particularly our dear friend Faysal (and I hope I have spelled his name correctly) who was the perfect host and brought us the best wines and delicacies on the terrace restaurant - and the lovely Danilla who chased our lost luggage for a day until it was delivered safely to the hotel.
If you are lucky enough to visit Sicily don't miss this treat of a hotel! It is central to all the main sights and shopping of Catania and would be a great base to explore the other wonders Sicily has to offer.
The lovely terrace restaurant has a fab menu and I loved the carpaccio of swordfish with pineapple and giant capers! don't miss the mini arrancini either - and try the raviolli Norma... and make sure you use the stairs and not the lift so you can eat more the next day too!!!! Or better still why not join in the tango nights which are often hosted on the terrace?

We foun this hotel just searching the internet for hotel in Catania. We had no idea what we were getting when we booked this hotel for less than $80 night. While the scenery outside of the hotel can be a huge turn-off to people like us that didn't know what to expect, the hotel itself was absolutely wonderful. The staff was very helpful, the hotel was extremely clean, and the rooms and ceilings were amazingly decorated. We had no idea what to expect Catania to look like. It was rather frightening when we first saw it. However, this hotel was probably in one of the safest and cleanest parts of Catania. We vertured out a little ways from the hotel, but the staff was quick to show us which areas on the map to stay away from - near the airport and along a portion of the coast. The staff was very friendly and helpful and went out of their way to make all of our guests comfortable. They called for all taxis to the airport and arranged for a private tour of Mt. Etna. It was amazing. Should we ever decide to stay in Catania again, we will definately stay at this hotel, and would recommend it to friends and family.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Royal Hotel is a four star hotel in the centre of Catania with 19 rooms. The rooms are positioned on three different levels. Each room is named after either an important Sicilian person or period of Sicilian history. The first floor is dedicated to Vincenzo Bellini. A world-renowned composer, born in Catania, and author of noted works like La Norma. The same Norma lends her name to our most beautiful suite. This suite boasts beautiful vaulted ceilings where, following a meticulous and complex restorative project, we were able to maintain the original frescoes, painted in the 18th century. The frescoes are not the only unique features of this suite, which could more accurately be called a royal apartment. It is almost 50m2 and has a fabulous bathroom, like something directly from the fabled Arabian Nights. The second floor is home to the rooms dedicated to Magna Grecia (Latin for "Greater Greece"): a very important period in the history of the city of Catania. The third floor is dedicated to Giovanni Verga. This author brought the name of Catania and of Sicily into the lives of many around the world with his historical novels, names that are kept alive today in names of the rooms of our hotel. All rooms are equipped with LCD monitor, WiFi, and a control panel for the electronic adjustment of lights, but most importantly they are very spacious. The Superior rooms boast either a splendid four-poster bed or a private terrace. One of the Superior rooms has a private access to the rooftop terrace with the possibility to book the exclusive use of the Solarium and the Jacuzzi. The Suites are particularly ample with separate, clearly defined living and sleeping quarters. The Suites also offer a relaxing shower with water massage. ... more   less
