“Jekyll and Hyde”
Reviewed 13 June 2012

This could be five or zero stars.....

On the upside:
Right at the centre of historic Catania - very convenient for everything
Historic hotel on top floors of old palace
Room 106: huge domed ceiling painted pink
Loved the lift: old fashioned close the doors yourself
Friendly and helpful staff at the front desk

On the downside
Right at the centre of party city Catania
Revellers keep the noise up to 4am, then the garbage and street cleaners start
The air conditioning did not work/was underpowered: temperature in room never fell below 30 centigrade. Hard to sleep: when you open the windows, you let the noise in.
Never slept more than four hours a night in four days
Cleanliness was not perfect: bathroom smelled of damp; stray hairs; sink drained very slowly; whole place needed renovation (carpets etc)

The ideal solution would be if they sorted out the air conditioning. Failing that, ask for a room looking onto the internal courtyard: it will be quieter, although the rooms are not so nice.

Incidentally, Catania is great:
very good for visiting Etna (best on a tour, very expensive: £100pp to do the whole thing)
Catania, along with Siracusa and Noto is the baroque capital of the world: all rebuilt after being wiped out by a 1693 earthquake. Siracusa is a bizarre mix of baroque and some surviving Greek, Norman and Roman. Often all in one building.
Taormina is the tourist capital of the area: it is pretty but completely overrun by the tourist industry. You make your own choice on that one.
Taormina and SIracusa are easy by public bus, very cheap. Locals recommend the bus, not the train.

Room Tip: Internal (courtyard) rooms will provide some respite from the all night partying in the streets outs...

We were only one night at Catania but very happy with the city.
The hotel wasnt very good, smelling very bad from the canalization, maybe a comum problem in Catania?! The breakfast was in a very small room and the waiter kept on making the dishes quite load while we were having it. Rooms were big and we were very happy with the location.

This is a gem of a hotel in the middle of Catania. The top floor of a palace with the most amazing rooms. All the ceilings painted by Italian masters, it looks like. Great breakfast included. Also free wifi. Bathrooms all redone. Very modern and clean.

The staff is incredibly accommodating. Nothing too much for them. We stayed here for a week.

Also, parking available with no hassle. Try driving into Catania on a Saturday night and find a space. No problem if you're staying here. Drive in to an oasis of a courtyard for your car.

The rooms overlook the square or the private courtyard. Either way, it's quiet bc the windows close to quietness. Rooms are AC also.

Catania is a great place to stay on the east side of Sicily. Everywhere is a quick day trip. Mount Etna, Syracuse, Ortega, Ragusa, Taormina and back to your gem at night with great local restaurants. Highly recommend the razzmatazz wine bar at the end of the street from the hotel.

Room Tip: Ckeck out the ceilings.

We spent two nights at this hotel. The hotel is located right in the heart of the city so it is perfect for exploring Catania. We were assigned a lovely room overlooking an inner courtyard. The bed was comfortable and the room was very quiet. The ceiling of the room was stunning - it had lovely paintings on it. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was okay and was included in the price.

First of all, when we checked in, the hotel staff gave us a standard room instead of a superior room (we paid in advance 75 euros per night having had an approximately discount of 30% for the superior room, while the standard room costs 70 euros per night if you don't pay in advance). After we asked for the correct room that we had paid for, the hotel staff gave us the superior room, but they didn't seem to be sorry for the mistake. The hotel is on the second floor of the building and at least one of the photos describing the interior of the hotel doesn't appear to be anywhere. In general, photos looked considerably better then the reality. The bathroom had no bathing tub, just a shower which we didn't expect for the price of the room in Catania. Over all, the bathroom looked kind of poor. The good thing about the hotel is the location, very close to the Domus square. Despite the first inconvenience with the wrong type of room, the hotel staff was friendly and polite. The room had a small and nice balcony. Breakfast was good.

Dear Customer,
reading the comment above We are really sorry about the little mistake regarding the room but as you know, when you book trough an travel agency is possibile make up an misunderstanding.
I smile reading that the photos which advertise our hotel are not true, maybe the one you are talking about is the congress room and unfortunately it is not open to everybody but just on special request.
I am really happy anyway to know that you found our staff friendly and polite because that is not less important than any other quality must be have a good and respectable hotel.
We will be honored if you will choose again our hotel for your next vacation here in Catania.

We were sent to this hotel by the hotel Il principe which has overbooked us. While being disapointed at the beginning, as it was supposed to be somehow not as nice, we were actually very satisfied by this hotel. The room were huge, the staff friendly and the breakfast ok. It's near the duomo and animated area of Catane. Overall it is a very good value for the price.
