“It's ok - but don't believe the Lonely Planet”
Reviewed 22 April 2011

Like other reviewers we went to this place as our (out of date) Lonely Planet recommended it. It has indeed changed owners so don't go there expecting a warm welcome and homemade food on the table.

This place was not as bad as some people are making out but if we'd have had more time (we arrived in Catania very late and had no reservations) I think we'd have shopped around.

Our room was large and spacious and clean. However, if you are in any way a light sleeper make sure you get one of the rooms at the back - the traffic on the main road at the front is incessant and, at the weekend, it's extremely noisy (drunken people shouting, thumping music from cars). I didn't sleep much.

For Italian standards the breakfast was not so bad: Italians just don't *do* breakfast and you're not going to get anything other than bread and cakes unless you're in an international hotel. However, as someone else mentions, they could really improve things if they didn't use disposable plates or just dump boxes of the cheapest brands on the table.

The lady serving breakfast and cleaning the place was very courteous and efficient. However, we had a small problem when we tried to pay. The owner had disappeared and 'was unreachable' and we didn't have the correct change and the lady said she couldn't change it. The pin machine (which looked fine to me) "was not working because the phone line was down". So we had to go out to find change so we could get our passports back which was quite irritating.

Oh and the owner "recommended" a parking lot where guests could get a good rate of Eur 8 for 24 hours - I wouldn't bother with that. Park in one of the side streets close by, (fold in your wing mirrors) as you only pay a couple of euros and it's free after about 8pm.

Room Tip: Take the room at the back

We thought this was a top B&B but the nice lady has gone and now there only in it for the money.

You can see that it had been great a couple of years ago but now....
Pay in advance...
Only the floor is cleaned... dust everywhere else...
Things that breakdown dont get fixed (lights, tiles, cupboards..)
Breakfast is minimal and if your late and someone else has eaten your ONE coissont then.... bad luck... no breakfast!!!

for a couple of euros more you can get a proper hotel....

this was the only truly unpleasant B & B we stayed at. My husband was afraid we'd perish during the night from the sewer gases that permeated our room. the window opened onto a narrow, well traveled street that was full of noise and exhaust. and not cheap. would not recommend to anyone.

a miserable place, noisy, smelly, unclean and a truely horrible breakfast: packaged food, plastic abounds, very tight space, and the worst caffelatte. Regettable!

We stayed at one of the apartments just across the road from the B&B.

We have been travelling for 9 months, and the apartment is our favourite accommodation to date. To be honest, we can't even look at the photos of the apartment, because it reminds us what we are missing out on now (we're still on the road).

It is huge, has a laundry, two balconies, a stainless steel kitchen, a lounge, two bedrooms and is very centrally located; a bakery, supermarket, and cheap tasty restaurants/cafes are all on the same street.

The mgmt and staff are also super accommodating. They let us go over to the B&B whenever we needed to use the free wi-fi, and had excellent maps and knowledge of the region.

We stayed here during the volcanic ash no-flights period and the staff could not have been kinder. We had our washing done for us and got use of a kitchen and a laptop, and they arranged a tour and taxis. Very good central location too, close to the station and fish market.

Stayed here over New Year and was made very welcome by the owner and staff.
Central location - a five minuets walk to the very heart of Catania and the wonderful shops and cafes. The building has been recently restored and the accommodation is all modern and new and very tastefully done, but still within the character of the original Italian facade.
I was made to feel very at home and even though traveling on my own I felt very safe here.
Catania is a great City to visit - often overlooked because people go straight to the more touristy Taormina - my advice take a couple of days here at the beginning or end of your tour and experience a slice of the REAL Sicily.
