“good food”
Reviewed 13 September 2011

Thanks to the hotel reception we were booked at the Capricci for a night out, during our convention in Palermo.

The place, right off the Politeama theatre, walking distance from our hotel, is runned by a charming lady together wit a couple of waitresses, non men around, as we learned they are only suppose to cook!! and the cuisine is honestly good, lots of typical "antipasti" and "pasta" such as a le sarde, norma, etc.

Good the wine cellar, mostly strong sicilian reds,

“Overpriced fish : 60 euros !”
Reviewed 5 June 2011

As recommended in our guide, we decided to visit this restaurant. The place was only filled with other tourists and no Italians. The food was Ok but we were charged 60 euros for a fish for two sidedish excluded and ended up with a 100 euros bill. The staff was not very friendly either. There are plenty of other options in Palermo, so pick up another choice !

“A disappointment”
Reviewed 18 July 2010

The worst of the restaurants we visited in Palermo for the same price and the only one to have a cover charge ((E3) for stale bread). Visit Ai Vecchietti and L'Acanto instead.

“Complete disaster”
Reviewed 15 July 2010

This restaurant was the only bad experience on our holiday on Sicily. We went there because the restaurant was recommended in a book about Palermo. The food was pretty bad at best compared to other restaurants we visited and the service is absolutely terrible: the waitress seemed like she was pissed at us for choosing to eat there and thereby giving her extra work. She slammed our food down and constantly sighed as if we were a nuisance by simply being there. I ordered the fish of the day and when it arrived it was an indistinguishable mix of filet, fish scales and fish bones because the waitress had cut and mixed the whole fish together with two spoons. Why she did that is beyond me. Don't get me wrong, I know how to clean fish and I actually like it when a restaurant serves a whole fish instead of a filet. but this was like overcooked minced fish meat with the bones and scales still in it. I sifted through the meat as best as I could but my gagging reflexes where thoroughly tested by the fish scales getting stuck in my throat. Strange enough the worst part was yet to come: the bill. The fish of the day is listed at a price per 100 grams and they charged twice as much as I ordered and was served. Complaining about this didn't help. And they also charged 20 euros of "service costs". Luckily there are so many other restaurants that are absolutely fantastic.

“Not Exceptional”
Reviewed 1 September 2008

Capricci is mentioned in lots of guide books, probably because so many editors and writers are too lazy to research new choices.

Here's the deal: This restaurant, established decades ago, used to be quite good (I first ate there around 1990). But things changed. New places sprung up all over the neighbourhood, and a few of them were fantastic.

Yet Capricci stuck to the same old course, offering 'standard' menus to 'tourists' when no visitor wanted to be called a 'tourist' anymore, much less treated like one. And the quality declined to the point where (in 2006) they started running local ads featuring nudity to attract customers, and as of this writing one of those posters is displayed in the restaurant!

Yet they still do some of the old standards quite well. The caponata is good, as is the sword fish. And the pasta dishes are all good. It's really a question of what you expect.
