This place is quirky and not all rooms are alike or equal; one is off the lobby and windowless. Rooms are quiet despite the central location. The location is unbeatable for touring Palermo. The owners are very welcoming and helpful. Their restaurant tips were great; they assist you in finding a place to park; etc., etc. They collect all sorts of art and antiques. You know that you are someplace special. Prices are reasonable. The neighborhood looks as if it might be dangerous, but is full of local families and fine. One just has to be careful not to be hit by passing cars; not much in the way of sidewalks in the area.

Room Tip: Check it out first or ask for one with a window. Don't expect a view and quiet.

We stayed at Porta di Castro and found a real little gem. If you love very old Vespa scooters or are looking for interesting ways to use them as decorations when you take them apart, then this is the place to stay in Palermo.

Alessandro, who speaks excellent English, was more than helpful, coming to find us when our GPS led us up the garden path, and stored our cases after we checked out while, leaving us to further explore the city freely. On arrival the staff take your luggage up the steep stairs for you and return them to the foyer for you when you leave.

This is also the only place we have stayed where you get SERVED breakfast by the smiling staff. It was a cafe experience with healthy and fresh food of fruit, cheeses and other delicious dishes, and is one of the rare Italian places that provides large cups for tea/coffee, a real treat.

The rooms are quirky, each one is different and dressed in some way with Vespa parts as feature. Even the staircase to the rooms is an adventure with one landing above the reception being a clear glass platform.

We were provided with a detailed map with all the best places to eat along with the price range for each place, very useful when on a budget.

Alessandro and his staff are to be congratulated for their wonderful service, interesting and central location and excellent price.

Room Tip: Top floor has multiple balconies and a suite, there is a ground floor for those who find stairs a ch...

This hotel was a fifteen minute walk from the bus and train station, and located in a small side street. The hotel entrance is very pleasant with a small breakfast room. Our room was located on the third floor, and although we knew there wasn’t a lift, we weren't prepared for the 50 plus steep stone steps we needed to climb. If you have mobility problems, this hotel is probably not for you. Our room 9 was clean, with a very nice bathroom, but the rest of the accommodation/apartment was very disappointing. The bedroom itself was very small, and the large double bed took up almost all the room. The rest of the apartment was a kitchen which had a large fridge, sink and cooker and a table and two chairs. However, there were no glasses, cups, plates etc, so even the fridge was pretty much unusable. It was furnished in old furniture that had been painted white to give it a ‘shabby chic’ effect (as we’d say in the UK), but it hadn’t really worked. It just felt old and shabby. It appeared to be an apartment the hotel had taken over, but not got round to refurbishing properly. If it had created a sitting room and removed the kitchen furniture, the very small bedroom would not have mattered. As it was we had to keep out cases and clothes in the kitchen. That said, the staff were very friendly and helpful, and the position of the hotel is good – near the Norman castle and the cathedral. Other rooms may be better – it’s worth requesting no kitchen perhaps at the booking stage.

Room Tip: Ask for a room without a kitchen.

We have just returned from a 3 night stay at this B and B-it was great! The rates are very reasonable, and Alessandro cannot do enough for his guests. He always had a smile on his face and offered assistance with anything you needed. He even walked us to the neighborhood market to find some wine. The breakfasts are served to you each morning, and there was always plenty of fresh fruit, meats, and various pastries.

Very close to major sights -you have to experience the Ballero Market, which is right down the street as you exit left out of the B and B. You can also walk to the train station that will take you directly to the Palermo airport, for about $5.50 Euro each. I would highly recommend this B and B to anyone that wants to be centrally located. Also, you walk to the local bus stop that will take you to Monreale. I would recommend this B and B to anyone visiting Palermo... Thanks Alessandro for making our holiday in Palermo enjoyable!

Room Tip: we had an apartment with full kitchen, have to climb over 30 steps, but nice once you got up there-h...

Our group had a nice stay at Porta Di Castro. The staff was brilliant - they called a few hours before check-in to make sure we knew the way, and offered a ride from the airport for a reasonable price. We were given complimentary fruit trays and beverages on arrival, and breakfast was very nice. The rooms were spacious and nicely decorated, but the beds weren't the most comfortable. The street was very noisey, but I imagine this is hard to avoid in Palermo. The decor in the lobby was really interesting and cool, and all in all it was a great value stay.

Generally a very enjoyable stay at Porta di Castro. The staff was friendly, polite and helpful - the guy even helped us to park the car. He also showed us the main points of interest in Palermo and gave us a free map.

The rooms are clean and nice, however the kitchen which was the part of the appartament no.13 was empty (no cuttlery, plates etc.), hence useless for tourists. The number of steep stairs might be an issue for older people. Some noise coming from the streets is inevitable for Palermo, I guess.

Brilliant location - right in the center, though getting there might require some over the average driving skills.

Breakfast was great with a platter of fresh fruit as an absolute highlight. Tasteful cornetto with ricotta is also worth mentioning. However quite average or worse... coffee.
