“Palace by name but faded glory by nature”
Reviewed 26 June 2014

Palermo is a city of faded glory and this hotel could not do it greater justice. We were lucky because we had been there before but otherwise you will have difficulty finding it by car. Despite its huge palatial size the hotel has no facade and does not stand out in Corso Vittorio Emmanuele. If you are in a car just leave it to them to park. Don't give a second thought to it even though they are likely to wind it round a pillar in the cavernous internal car park. The hotel is as close to a palace as you are likely to find. It is gigantic and has some really splendid rooms. But they are far too large for any normal 21st ( or even 20th century needs. The cost of upkeep must be prohibitive and it's difficult to see how it can be profitable. Palermo is a crazy city and this is part of it. Breakfast, which is good, is served in a magnificent dining room with gigantic chandeliers! Our travel agent recommended a superior room which was probably good advice. It was large and light but looked out from its 3 large windows on to the tastiest back alley imaginable, except in Palermo where it is quite normal. Well situated for the grand buildings of Norman Palermo. I have reviewed the rooftop restaurant separately

This is an old aristocratic palace with a tremendous amount of character reflecting its time in history (like most of the Quattro Canti area of Palermo). The front desk was very helpful considering this was the visit stop on our 2 weeks in Sicily and we were constantly in need of assistance. The breakfast was a feast for nominal fee and was the best of our trip!

The only problem was that to use free WiFi, we had to be in the lobby.

The hotel is long past it's days of grandeur. The staff are not particularly friendly and uniformed flunkies are everywhere expecting a tip. Our window looked straight on to a brick wall about a foot away so felt like a tomb and this wasn't helped by a labyrinth of corridors which had to be negotiated to find the one lift which stopped at this floor. Good breakfast and very central location but that's about it.

Room Tip: Insist on a room with a view but be prepared for noise from the street.

The hotel is lovely. Our rooms and views were breathtaking. The hotel's breakfast was a delicious feast. It even had Gluten Free choices. Thanks to the concierge at the Centrale Palace Hotel who recommended dinning options that were exactly what we were looking for. One night we couldn't find a restaurant and when we called them to confirm the address, they called the restaurant and had the owner come find us! Palermo is a very busy city and this hotel and their staff made us feel at home.

Like other reviewers we stayed at The Central Palace Hotel with Colette Tours. The hotel, like the. City of Palermo, was clearly a great place in times past. The past grandeur of the hotel is evident in common areas, but the rooms...not so much! Faded linens, aging furnishings and plumbing in ill repair. The first room we were given had a leaky pipe. The hotel was very quick to make things right by assigning us a different room. The room was clean and had a lovely little balcony...but the chairs had no cushions. (In fairness, I feel certain the hotel would had sent cushions...but we just never asked). The bed was comfy, nice pillows and the bath had fluffy bath sheets! The housekeeping staff were terrific, helping us move our things and we always had plenty of soap, shampoo and lotion! I tried to check out of my room the evening prior to departure to avoid the morning rush and the gentleman at the front desk asked me to "come back later"...in spite of the fact that it was not busy and it appeared it would have been easy for him to accommodate the request. Breakfast was delightful, I am a tea drinker and there was a nice selection. Smoked salmon, sardines, cassata cake, cannoli filling and FABULOUS bread were just a few of the breakfast offerings! The location of the hotel was OK but not great...it felt like the area might be "in transition"...a short walk to many sites, but bordering on an area that did not have a safe and secure feeling. If your tour takes you to the Central Palace, no worries..but if you have a choice, you might want to research other options.

So we totally fell for the 'upgrade to junior suite' line on the first night (beware) and were woken at 0530 by a series of bin men, delivery guys and other raucous types crashing and yelling up and down the alley. What they avoid telling you is that the junior suite has no double glazing and abuts the service lift and metal staircase used by staff. And it whiffs of sewage.
Hasty retreat by reception staff results in a third floor room with double glazing, smaller but hey, who stays indoors in Sicily?! Otherwise a great stay only slightly marred by possibly the worst WORST coffee I have ever tasted. And I have travelled to some interesting places where coffee was not a regular beverage. This was like swamp water and could not be improved whatever you added. Hotel take note; Sicily has some fantastic coffee bars, don't stint on the quality in the hotel, it makes a poor impression. However, as said, a charming staff and three out of four sound nights sleep.

I just got back from a "Crossroads of Sicily" trip with Collette Tours (review on Collette to follow). This hotel had a beautiful entrance, you knew that it was a palace at one time. The dining room was beautifully decorated, the roof-top bar and restaurant were also beautiful. The food in the roof-top restaurant was wonderful. However, the guest rooms left a lot to be desired. Bathrooms needed major updating, decor in the rooms was dowdy. Buffet breakfast was enjoyable, but if you like American coffee, forget about it!! The one bar on property which was on the roof-top did not open until 5 p.m., so if you wanted a glass of wine before dinner, you had to go elsewhere.
