Mercure Palermo Excelsior City

It reminded me of the Palace Hotel in Budapest in the early 90s-- lots of marble and some faded grandeur. Nonetheless, it was extremely comfortable and functional, and with a little upgrade here and there (mostly involving ripping up the overly used carpeting and replacing the old minifridge in our room) this would be a grand 5 star hotel and not just a great 5 star value. Our room was gigantic and incredibly comfortable. My wife and I were here for part of our honeymoon trip and it did not disappoint. They even gave us breakfast for free when they found it was our honeymoon and realized it was not included in the package I booked (little gestures that much more expensive hotels on our trip did not extend). The staff was top-notch, and even without an official concierge most of the staff was willing to go the extra mile to help out. If they want to be a true 5 star tourist hotel, that may be a position worth staffing, but I get the feeling Palermo tourism is still in its nascent stages, at least for Americans. I loved the neighborhood of this hotel, quiet, and my wife loved the shopping. Being 10 minutes from the historical center while being on a quiet street in a great neighborhood near the parks and numerous restaurants, it is a location that cannot be beat. I will stay here--for sure-- next time I return with my wife and my mom and family when we take another Sicily vacation! I just wish they had a pool...but hey, for the price I'll just sit in the tub in the beautiful bathroom!

Stayed there in March on business and weather wasni't the best - rainy and cold! The hotel is an old villa, nicely decorated and with lots of charme, also in a good location close to the city and with excellent parking service - a must! As HHilton members they gave us a great room with an huge bathroom which we unfortunately didnot manage to heat!

Pro: Location in my opinion is excellent. Hotel is on the edge of the English Gardens and is a short walk to the central shopping district. You can pay 1.30 and take a 1-2 minute bus ride to the central areas or about 5 mins to the train station 200ft outside the hotel. The bus service from the airport Prestige e Commande aalso drops you off (6.20 one way) ~100meters from the hotel but the pickup is directly across the street. IMO it feels safer rather than being more "central" down the via Marqaeda. Staff at the front desk were all very helpful. Celine, Domenica, Gabrielle, Rafaella and whoever else I might have forgotten thanks to you all. I did wish there was a dedicated concierge. One strange thing is the "front" of hotel does not face the main street Liberta. So a little hard to find.

Room: 3rd floor with 3 motorized roof top windows. No side windows so no view. The hotel is remodeled so the building is "traditional" the room is modern. Bathroom was small but functional. Water pressure was a bit low but I believe that's a water saving issue. Bed was a firm/hard bed but not a deal breaker. TV entertainment system was really nice, internet speeds were excellent.

Restaurants: Breakfast is ok. Can get crowded and food items did run low. Run of the mill. Nothing terribly good or bad. Hot american breakfast, daily breads, fruits and cheeses. The Exe restaurant seemed to be under/not staffed. Waited around to eat there but left since no one would attend to us. Plenty of nearby restaurants.

Extra - Hotel has arrangement with Mondello beach to reserve beds. Hotel staff so very graciously let us keep the room until 6pm because shuttle seats were limited. Was able to come back from beach and shower before heading to airport. MAJOR PLUS. This is where you earn the 5th star.

I like to stay at Hilton Hotels but this place was below any expectation i have of my favourite hotel, the first disappointment was during check-in the receptionist could not speak English, then the room smelled of cigarette smoke and the cleanliness was below standard, the room faced the main road and was very noisy during the night , the peak and shocker of my stay was during breakfast when a waiter took an almost empty cheese tray from the buffet to top up, when he turned to walk to the kitchen some cheese dropped to the floor, he picked up the cheese and put it back onto the tray, overall the service was not up to Hilton standard at all, i planed to stay longer than one night but changed my mind and moved to another Hotel since i was on holiday and wanted a nice and comfortable place.

Room Tip: don 't stay in this hotel

We were staying 4 nights. Hotel itself is well-kept, beautiful and clean.

NEGATIVE - At the arrival, they gave us a double room, when entering the room, unfortunately the ceiling where A/C was, it was tripping right to the carpet - NOT GOOD FIRST IMPRESSION, but clearly they were not aware of this problem. We were given another room, which was longer walk, but the room was very nice. Another thing was the parking, hotel don't have their own parking, so if you want to play it really SAFE - it's 20€ per night, they will take the car and bring it when you need it. We did it chose this option for first night, but then other nights we were ended up parking almost next to the hotel. You have to pay for the internet, all in all it was said also in the booking, but 8€ per 1hour, 13 or 20€ per 24hours - COME ON, but yes we know - that's how they make their profit :P

POSITIVE - TIP! There is an unregulated parking area when going out from the hotel and to the right (study carefully, one zone doesn't have traffic signs regulating it) - so you don't even have to pay 1€ per hour (which is the normal fee for that zone 8am-2pm & 5-8pm), the only thing is that on the daytime there is one guy regulating the parking (as they do a lot in Sicily), taking advantage of the situation of that particular area :)
Breakfast was perfect, very wide selection, but go before 9am to get the taste of everything.
TV had good choice of channels (Bloomberg, CNN, etc.) - didn't watch much, but worth mentioning I guess.

This hotel has a useful location as you can easily walk into the town, but does not have much in the way of facilities and no pool. There is a good restaurant, which is just as well since if you are not eating in you will need to take a cab from the rank outside as there is nothing within walking distance. It makes a good base for a couple of days but I would not recommend it for longer. The hotel was hosting a convention whilst we were staying and was not coping particularly well, taking 2 hours and 3 reminders to deliver a disappointing fruit plate.

We booked a two night stay at the Excelsior Hotel in Palermo during August and extended our stay at a slightly increased cost, which we were happy to pay as it was over the Bank Holiday in Sicily. We found the Excelsior quite easily, taking the 101 or 102 bus from the train station at a fraction of the cost of a taxi. The bus takes a route up Via Roma and Via Liberta and drops you right outside the hotel.

We enjoyed the quieter location that the Excelsior afforded us, it was close enough to everything, but away from the hustle and bustle of the main attractions. By walking around and using the local bus systems we visited many sites including the local beach resort of Mondello. The hotel runs a free shuttle bus to this area, though it was fully booked during our visit and you are expected to pay 10 euros each for the hire of umbrellas and sun-beds.

The staff are highly efficient and the ones at breakfast were particularly attentive and pleasant. My request for a 'quiet' room was attended to and the hotel certainly provided this - we had room 216, overlooking a small inner courtyard, but this gave us privacy. The room and bathroom were very comfortable, we particularly enjoying the facility of a bath alongside the shower. We felt this was a good choice of hotel overall in Sicily's capital city.
