DO NOT GO TO DA MIMI. We booked a condo on VRBO and our host recommended it. While the food wasn't bad, the surprise prices were outrageous. When you sit down, they understand enough English to take your order and charm you. When you are shocked to see the total on your bill, they don't understand a word of English!! Wine for 5 euros on the menu was 15 euros on the check!!! Fish for 8 euros on the menu was 16 euros on the check!!! It went on and on. You can waste your vacation time arguing with them in a different language, call the cops and waste even more time... or read the reviews ahead of time. DO NOT GO TO DA MIMI.

First and foremost, there was a big language barrier, but I can't say that was the reason this experience was so bad because everyone else in Italy has been so much nicer and more genuine. We speak only English but the owner seemed to understand us for the most part, which makes it more frustrating because we felt like we were being hustled from the start. My husband, baby and I went here for pizza because we were In the area during siesta. They told us fresh pizza was only available for dinner, which was fine, but then tried to talk us into two huge seafood pastas, never suggesting the focaccia pizza that was right inside. Instead I walked inside to the counter and literally pointed to a calzone, focaccia, and two appetizers (zucchini and caponata) that we wanted. The owner said, I'll put those (zucchini and caponata) and also pointed to fried eggplant, on a sample plate. I said sure, even though I asked multiple times "quanto" and no response. Next thing we know there are literally a dozen small plates coming to our table- fish I had refused three times, rice balls, etc. my husband made them take half away, saying we didn't order this; the waitress said something which I sensed was "you'll still have to pay for this" but we were so uncomfortable and feeling outnumbered and not safe in the area that we just wanted it to be done with. The food was disgusting, barely heated. Then the owner tried to talk to me about how much money we made in America and have us point out which rental car was ours. It was inappropriate and weird and all we wanted was to get ourselves and our baby out of there. Finally, 47 freaking euros later (no alcohol or other drinks, just one coke!) we paid and left, feeling they were laughing at us all the way home. Truly one of if not the worst dining experiences in my entire life.

This small trattoria, recommended by our Sicilian AirBNB hosts, was just around the corner from where we were staying on the edge of the historic centre. We came here for a late lunch at 16.00 just after we arrived in Palermo and they laid a table specially for us.

A spaghetti amatriciana, an arancini, a beer and carafe of house wine for two came to 15€. While we were eating, they were doing a roaring take away trade with the locals.
