“Sweet little place, good location for travellers”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 June 2010

This place was really sweet. Staff went off their way to help us any time we asked for something. Rooms are lovely and newly decorated.Breakfast was small for a four-star hotel but overall I think it was excellent value for money. Location was in a funny side street, not too easy to find, but once we found our way around it we discovered it was 4 minutes walk from the train and bus station (which are next door to each other) making it therefore perfect for moving around Sicily or for taking excursions to places such as Noto. I think I Coloniali is a great choice if you wish to stay in Siracusa in style without splashing out on an expensive hotel in Ortigia.

Hotel dei Coloniali – Siracusa, Sicily.

This relatively new hotel (advertised as four star on their card), lies just outside of Ortigia island in Siracusa on a somewhat isolated back street. Although I assume Siracusa is safe for the most part, the last few blocks of the walk to the hotel are not exactly through a pleasant neighborhood. Having said that, the main police station is also on this block and may make some people feel better while walking to the hotel at night. I really don’t see the value of staying within Ortigia itself when this hotel is perfectly sufficient and it is such a short walk away, but the remote rather isolated location of this hotel and the lack of any views on this lonely side street may put some travelers off from selecting it. It was fine for us. The quality you get for the price at this hotel certainly exceeds similarly priced lodging on Ortigia. We were very happy with the rooms and the staff.
The hotel has many points that recommend it but it appears they are still trying to figure things out. In general Siracusa is years behind other regions of Sicily when it comes to tourism services – from signs at major attractions, to maps (which most hotels are unable to supply beyond B&W web-based printouts) and the level of English communication in general.
There is very convenient street parking right outside the hotel doors. The same is not true for most hotels on Ortigia. The rooms are well-decorated in bright colors and almost everything is still brand new: the mattresses are firm and comfortable; the linens are of good quality; bathrooms have nice fixtures and beautiful sinks; nice toiletries are provided. The bathrooms may be the best part of these rooms, as they are very large by European standards. The high pressure shower and extremely consistent supply of hot (scalding) hot water was a pleasure. These bonuses are often a rarity when traveling in Italy. In general the rooms are modern and pleasing.

Negatives:
-Location is convenient, but doesn’t have the safest feel.
-Staff speaks barely any English, but are very kind and try to help the best they can. However if you try get any information beyond the basics, you are out of luck.
-The advertised in-room-internet was nonexistent. I’m not sure if it was permanently nonexistent, or a new problem. It was irritating to choose the hotel based on its advertised in-room-internet and satellite TV and be told these were “unavailable” - this is the main reason I give this hotel a rating of four instead of five.
- TV channels are strictly in Italian – no international news channels or anything in English. This is not a big loss as you are unlikely to be watching TV, but may be important to some travelers.
-Breakfast is the typical very basic Italian fare – except the oddity that you are provided no bowls for cereal and must consume it out of teacups. I think these are just glitches they are trying to work out. Perhaps the cereal idea had only recently been implemented?

Altogether I think this hotel is often offered at very good prices on Venere and other websites and should be very comfortable for most visitors.

As a final suggestion on Siracusa, I’d tell people to visit this first, and then go on to the other cities of Palermo, Cefalu, Taormina, Erice, Noto, etc. The often spoken of charm of the run-down buildings on Ortigia is somewhat lost after you have explored the many other parts of Sicily, though I imagine if it is one’s first stop, the novelty of it all will be exciting. We were rather disappointed in Siracusa as our last stop, after the many other wonders of Sicily.

This was the perfect place for us in Siracusa. While the guide books will tell you to stay in the old city (on the island of Ortigia), we were happy that we stayed just over the bridge on the mainland. In fact, we plan to let Rough Guides know that they need to revise their statement that there is only one good place to stay on the mainland in Siracusa.

Hotel dei Coloniali is a beautiful new hotel with incredibly friendly and helpful staff. It's a short walk (or a very short drive) to Ortigia. The rooms are elegant and modern, and the breakfast is nicely done. It's a 4-star hotel for a fraction of the price you would pay for one elswhere.

We had a car and were able to park right in front of the hotel (a treat anywhere in Sicily). Whereas Ortigia is not set up for driving and, in fact, drivers are actively encouraged to park in a massive lot near the entrance to the island and take a minibus or walk into the city.

  • Liked — The gorgeous rooms
  • Disliked — The immediate surroundings are a little bleak
