“Great views of the sea”
Reviewed 30 November 2013

We spent 5 nights in Domus Mariae Benessere - 25-30Nov in the building with the sea view. We had two rooms - one double and one with two single beds with sea views. The rooms were next to each other. Indeed the view of the sea is amazing and the location of the hotel is very convenient. We were within 15 minutes walking distance to the local market and shops and restaurants and 30minutes to the ruins.

Though the building and room facilities are basic, the rooms are spacious and the staff are all very warm, friendly and helpful. We are especially thankful to Cinzia who helped us contact the airlines and airport offices to trace our lost luggage and was most reassuring throughout the two days we were without our luggage,

We enjoyed the breakfast spread - we found it healthy, fresh and very tasty -it provided us a good start to our days and the staff exercised flexibility by allowing us an early breakfast when we had an early tour during one of the days of our stay. We love the fresh coffee - much appreciated as the days were quite cold during our stay and the fresh tomato salad is wonderful - we bought spices from the market to try to recreate the dish when we're home.

We hope the room heating will be restored soon - Cinzia and the staff were most apologetic about the breakdown. All the best with the repair!

Room Tip: Have the sea facing room but be careful during the rains as water can seep into the rooms if the out...

Out our window was the sea. If one had time, the spa sang a siren's song, and the quiet ladies of the convent smiled and offered assistance when we met in the elevator. In addition to a great location, we had a tasty breakfast, and nighttime wine on the rooftop, from which the lights of Syracusa winked. We were close to the Ancient Greek Temples and Italian designer clothing boutiques. In a word. We had it all.

The room I stayed in had a sea view and was elegantly furnished.
Free bikes were available on request and very much added to the pleasure of my trip. Breakfast was ample and varied.
The staff were attentive and helpful without being intrusive.

Rooms were large and well appointed, Bathroom was larger than most and the location is terrific, right near the water. We used the parking facilities provided and walked everywhere we went, even to the Ruins. Spent almost all of our two days on the island so the car park was important.

We stayed four nights in the converted convent and despite the busy streets of Syracuse and Ortegia, we found peace and tranquility at the Domus Mariae Benessere.
The rooms were tidy and clean although our spa bath was in need of attention. The power jets were not working and there was some sealant missing.
The rooftop terrace is ideal if you want some early morning sun. There are four sun loungers which we used twice and apart from the occasional nun we hardly saw a soul.
There are seating areas where you can eat your lunch, read a book or look out over the sea.
Just around the corner from the hotel is a street market where you can buy fresh fish, vegetables and cheese.
The hotel has a small indoor pool with spa jets to ease your aches and pains but this needs to be booked in advance but you will have it all to yourself.
Breakfast is reasonable but if you are not there early then there is sometimes not much left.
Overall we found the staff friendly and helpful and we enjoyed our stay.

Dear Simon,
thank you for your review.
We're happy that you enjoyed our terrace, cleanness and the SPA.

As regard breakfast time, sometimes it took few minutes to refill dishes and we always try to do it as fast as we can. We're sorry if sometimes it isn't like this.

We hope to welcome you again during your next stay in Sicily.

A bit pricey but worth the money. Other reviews state the parking problem. We were fortunate to get a place in the lot and didn't move it until the next day when we were leaving. The room was beautiful and very clean. We had a room that faced a courtyard. We were tired and we had our own bottle of wine so we got take out pizza and sat in the courtyard -- alone :-) The breakfast was the best of all that we had in our 2 weeks in Sicily! There were many home made cakes, puddings, bread...The hotel is a converted convent and there are a few sisters around but the rooms did not look like a nunnery (my husband's name for it).

Room Tip: We were in Room 107 (I think) but I would guess all rooms were equally good. We would have loved a...

Dear Guest,
thank you for your time writing this review.
As you already told, parking is usually easy (a bit less in week end and holidays): we have 4 parking spaces for free, but there're also the little square and the seaside.
As concern room facilities, they are classic and warm coloured in blue, green and red, with minibar, tv and air conditioning.
We are happy you enjoyed your breakfast.

We hope to see you again, next time during your next trip in Sicily.

Kind regards

We stayed 2 nights in this hotel. Great location in Ortygia, easy walking distance to enjoy the island. Nicely decorated hotel with a great rooftop terrace with lots of comfortable seating. Directions on how to get to the terrace are posted in the lift (elevator). Enjoyed a picnic lunch and a sunset bottle of wine and snacks while enjoying the view and the cool sea breeze! Great breakfast with a good variety. As this is a converted convent run by a small group of nuns, there is a small, beautiful chapel, too. Friendly staff.

Dear Guest,
thank you for choosing our hotel and for writing a review.
We're happy to read a lot of positive things, such as the location, the roof top terrace on the sea, and our breakfast.
The church dedicated to St. Filippo Neri is our pearl.
Our Staff hope to welcome you during your next trip to Sicily.
