Grande Albergo Alfeo
Ranked #11 of 75 Hotels in Syracuse
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 4 July 2014

The Grande Albergo Alfeo is situated between the rail and bus stations in one direction, and the old town of Ortygia in the other, with both being 10-15 minutes' walk away. The advantage of NOT staying in Ortygia, by the way, is that you're outside the really touristy area, and you mix with real people and find real shops and cafes (we used and can recommend Angelina's Bakery for light meals and Ortygia Travel for tours, both within 5 minutes' walk). The Greek and Roman ruins are within walking distance, too - we walked there and back - but it's certainly more than a stroll.

The Grande Albergo Alfeo is a nice-looking and welcoming place, and our room was large and comfortable with a sea view (in the middle distance). We found the staff to be pleasant, and there was free wifi in the room. Additionally, there is a computer in the lobby area available for use.

So, why only 4 stars? Perhaps it's mean to criticise the free breakfast, but, as it is included in almost all Italian hotels, it is fair game. The range is a bit ordinary, and not all of it is of a particularly standard, while the tea was luke-warm and the coffee, well... We ordered cappuccinos from the waiter - we had to catch his eye, which took a while - which was better, but still not what one would expect from a 4-star establishment.

Siracusa is terrific. We visited the very worthwhile ruins, as I mentioned, and wandering around Ortygia (it's actually on an island) was lot of fun. The highlight: having dinner in the Piazza Duomo, the Cathedral Square, at an outdoor cafe. And neither the food nor the wine was expensive.

So, go to Sicily, and make sure you spend 3 nights, if you can, in Siracusa. You can even arrange to go on the Inspector Montalbano tour if you know and like the TV series!

Room Tip: Try for a sea view room if you can.

This hotel was convenient, easy and modern. The bathroom was great, particularly by Sicilian standards. The rooms are very sizeable with tall ceilings.

The location is a perfect mid-way between Ortygia and the new-town. It is surrounded by cafés and small bars and a short walk to great restaurants.

It is not an amazing hotel (and no parking) but certainly not bad at all and there is not anything specifically bad to point out about it. I would say it is good value.

We had a very enjoyable stay here and found the hotel modern with very helpful staff and its location ideal, being just a short way outside of Ortigia. Excellent breakfasts and very clean and comfortable rooms. Would definitely stay here again.

This was a very pleasant, comfortable hotel with friendly staff. Breakfast was excellent, and the room was very nice, and clean. The location was central, and it was easy to walk to Ortygia and enjoy the beautiful Piazza and its architecture. Make sure you see the Caravaggio, too...

After having read some reviews, I was very apprehensive about this hotel, but it had been booked by our tour company. It was still undergoing renovations while we were there. My room looked brand new (and I checked the mattress for bugs and was relieved to find none). A piece of the flush apparatus of the toilet fell off in the night, because it had been stuck on with a bit of putty). The accommodations were fine. The woman at the desk was the rudest I have encountered anywhere. She was busy with personal phone calls all evening and would ignore anyone standing at the desk. The phones were disabled for outside lines, so calling cards could not be used. She admitted this at first, but then continued to say that I wasn't dialing correctly. (It's not that difficult to dial 0). It was in her power to give us the outside lines, but she wouldn't. She also did not put in the wakeup calls and luckily, I had set the alarm on my phone and was able to wake up all of the students (or we would have missed our flight). The rudeness of the staff prevents me from recommending this hotel. I have advised the student tour company that they should perhaps find another hotel.

For our first stay, we had an interior facing room - not a great view, but very quiet. Then we had an exterior facing room, better view a little less quiet.Loved the breakfast, the downstairs salon to sit and read, the handy location, and the price. no complaints except the receptionist over the weekend had no experience.
