I found this wonderful hotel while I was driving from Agrigento to Siracusa through trip advisor. I was traveling solo for two weeks counterclockwise from Palermo. I could have not asked for a better and more friendly place to stay. I was greeted very cheerfully by Silvia who offered me fresh juice and pastries and she showed me the offerings of the hotel and other excursions in and around the Siracusa area including an amazing canyon hike in Cavagrande, dinner in Noto and shopping in Ortigia.

The breakfasts and dinners were amazing. The friendly helpful staff helped make this trip extra special. The grounds are spectacular including the pool which there is a nice bar close by. The rooms are excellent and quiet. A great place to recharge.

Last but not least the proprietor, Giuisi, was probably one of the nicest people I have ever met. She made me feel welcome and went out of her way to help me. Traveling alone can be difficult sometimes and she helped me not feel so alone and helped me plan my itinerary the rest of my time in Sicily. She definitely went above and beyond what a normal hotel owner would do.

So, if you want to escape your normal routine and take on a Sicilian adventure, make sure to stop at Hotel Borgo Pantano! A very special place.

Room Tip: I stayed in two different rooms and both were quiet, clean and spacious.

Whenever you plan a stay in the Siracusa area in Sicily, consider Borgo Pantano. Excellent service, splendid site, beautiful rooms, lovely swimming pool, kind people, tasteful food, rich breakfast buffet,...
There motto is: "your smile is our energy". Well, dear Borgo Pantano team: you gave us energy. A splendid holiday, rest, being serviced and pampered, we loved it so much.
Whenever we return to Sicily we want to stay in your place. Grazie mille for everything.

We just returned from this hotel with our toddler. We had a fantastic time and we will definitely go back one day. Apart from being a little tricky to find and off the beaten track it was a fabulous hotel and would highly recommend.

- Extremely helpful, friendly and attentive staff
- Very well equipped for small children and babies
- Good food in restaurant and pool bar
- Huge selection of breakfast delights
- "Beach entry" pool suitable for toddlers
- Big grounds to wander about in
- Excellent spa treatments
- Can cater for children's meals earlier in evening
- Baby sitter available
- Good DVD selection

- Not enough surfaces or shelves or tables to put things on in bedroom or bathroom
- Restaurant in evening is not open until 7.30 and portions are on the fine dining (small) side.
- Quite close to motorway, which isn't a big deal as long as you know it
- Little bit tricky to find

We spent a lovely week at Borgo Pantano. To be honest, before visiting, I was slightly cynical about the amazing scores shown on Trip Advisor. I'm pleased to confirm they seem to be genuine! We were not offered any incentives or vouchers to write a review, nor for any enhanced scoring. This is our genuine review of our visit 18th May to 25 May, 2014.

Their motto - "your smile is our energy" - is not a trite marketing sound bite. For once, an hotel's staff has been recruited and trained with the corporate objective in mind. Everyone we met - housekeeping, front of house, catering - greeted us in a friendly fashion and went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable. This included (voluntarily) organising a member of staff to detour on their way in, to run an errand for my wife.

CATERING: was very good, reasonably priced. Breakfast (inclusive) comprised a wide variety of freshly prepared savoury and sweet pastries; fruit; cheeses and meats; bacon prepared in continental style; slices of ham and cheese pancake rolls; scrambled eggs. The staff were happy to organise other dishes such as poached eggs.

Lunch at the pool cafe was a variety of salad, sandwiches, panini, pasta, fresh fish and also included BBQ grilled prawns or minute steak.

Dinner was a small fixed choice of dishes, supplemented by the day menu - typically two or three freshly prepared fish dishes and a couple of additional meat dishes. Overall, we enjoyed almost everything we ate. Portions were generous and typically we shared a starter then had a main course with one vegetable or potato option each. The fresh fish was always excellent, the battered vegetables (light tempura style) were a generous portion and a better alternative to French fries. The steak was cooked beautifully - very tender. I recommend it cooked "blue" or at least "red". The standard sauce is peppercorn but for variety I suggested a cream/Gorgonzola sauce which was so good, chef should add to the menu!

Dessert was a little limited but typically we had eaten enough to do without or simply share an ice cream (two generous, light scoops).

Overall, the menu was a little repetitive unless you mixed it up by eating out, occasionally. Once or twice a course was slightly over salted and the broccoli gratin was slightly overcooked but in context the majority of dishes were good and, when combined with the good presentation, service, and quantity were overall good value for money and we look forward to a return visit.

ACCOMMODATION: We stayed in the Unique Suite which was an interesting two floor layout, lots of space, overall. The terrace looks out over the courtyard and is level with the restaurant, opposite. It was pleasant to sit out on but not really set up for private sunbathing (there are extensive gardens and pool area - more below).

The room design /layout was such that form was favoured over function - but it was comfortable, clean, linen changed every two days (towels daily, if required). The seating wasn't really conducive to sitting around with a good book! The satellite TV included lots of bad Italian channels / shopping channels and one English BBC news channel. However, there is a DVD player in the room and the hotel has a selection of free to borrow (old) books and (old) DVD's with English audio tracks.

The jacuzzi filled very, very, slowly from the tap, but switching on the rainfall shower head, simultaneously, meant the bath filled in an acceptable time.
TIP - if using the twin sinks move the tap levers gently - unless you want to wash your shirt, trousers, shoes! The water gushes out, hits the plug head and splashes everywhere.

I'm not sure on the pricing differential or layout of other room types but would happily return and stay in a "lesser room". The overall experience was so good it would not be diminished in one of the other rooms - subject to position, I guess.

GROUNDS: there are a generous number of sun loungers with umbrellas, sun beds around the pool, seats, tables and sun beds in large "tent like" shaded areas, an occasional hammock between the fruit trees. The pool is quite large, clean with shallow areas for children.

On two evenings, wedding receptions with up to 240 guests were hosted in a function area adjacent to the pool. This was far enough away from the main hotel rooms that there was no disturbance.

SURROUNDINGS: the hotel is set in a secluded, country area around 5km from the nearest petrol station (if open!) and 7km from Syracuse. Even with SatNav this can be quite a challenge. I had read previous reviewer comments but was still unprepared for the route! Roads suddenly transform in to a section of potholed track and you are faced with go/no go decisions!

There is a new highway Syracuse-Gela in construction. Sections are open for use although there are some works in progress and speed restricted sections. You pass through a number of Toll Booths /Auto pay points. All sections that we travelled were unmanned and as yet no autopay collection.
TIP even if you have a SatNav you should take a good quality, recent, road map or print copies from the Internet to give you context for the Sat Nav suggested routes. We frequently decided to ignore the suggested directions.

COMISO AIRPORT: We flew into Comiso Airport, recently developed from a military airfield. Terminal is small, clean and you are quickly processed.
TIP for Return journey - once through Departures /Security there are only a couple of vending machines and no Duty Free area. Car hire was well organised - we fortunately decided on the local additional insurance and enjoyed a worry free week on a variety of potholed main roads / farm tracks / narrow streets with hairpin turns whilst keeping an eye out for scooter riders, cyclists, impatient F1 trialists attempting overtaking and undertaking manoeuvres on blind bends, solid white lines. Roundabouts are a particular joy!

Although this was a first trip to Sicily the purpose was more recuperative than cultural! Weather was a little better than UK with several really lovely sunny days although there were a couple of showery cloudy days on arrival and at the end of the week. That said, we did enough to know we would love to come back to this island with warm, friendly people, fantastic scenery and sights and extensive history. We toyed with a trip to Etna / Taormina. However we decided to spend our time locally, visiting the 2,700 year old heart of Syracuse - Ortiga Island. We also drove out to the site of the old Roman amphitheatre, caves and even more impressive Greek Theatre on the hilltop with beautiful views. The auditorium has some sympathetic renovation to the seating area and, today is used for cultural events.
We also really enjoyed a day strolling around Noto, a simple 30km drive from the hotel. The jewel in the crown of this city, rebuilt in Baroque style after the 1693 earthquake, is the beautiful Cathedral.

To summarise, a lovely break in a lovely hotel in peaceful surroundings. Stay is enhanced by own transport combined with a sense of adventure but not for nervous drivers!

We had a very relaxing stay at this beautiful hotel. The staff are all so helpful and welcoming and everywhere is spotlessly clean. The breakfasts were fab - possibly the best I've had anywhere - and the staff really look after you. They've already thought of everything before you think to ask for it! Would go back in an instant. As others have said, you really need a car to stay here as it's just outside Syracuse. It's a good location for trips for Noto, the Vendicari nature reserve and beaches, and Modica and Ragusa as well as Ortigia/Syracuse. I miss the lovely breakfasts on the terrace in the sun!

A really lovely hotel with (mainly) fantastic staff, particularly the people on reception who really cant do enough to help you.
The pool area is excellent. The poolside snacks are great. Generally the food is good, but not great. 99% of the staff were delightful.
The problem is that it's a €40 round taxi trip into town (there's no courtesy bus). In the 9 days we there we spent c€300 on taxis. We didn't mind, as the hotel was lovely, we loved the poolside facilities that we couldn't have got elsewhere, and we had such a nice time, but if I had to be a bit more rigorous on budget it might have been an issue.

Room Tip: The junior suites have a downstairs area that is pretty much redundant - no fridge, no tea making fa...

The Borgo Pantano is in one of the most beautiful settings I have ever seen. The pool and surrounding area have been imaginatively and artistically designed with secluded lounging areas and sitting areas, yet the whole thing looks so natural and peaceful. Very relaxing!
The rooms and all the outdoor spaces are spotlessly clean.
The breakfast is the best I have eaten in any hotel. It is served on a lovely terrace and the staff are brilliant.
I thought it looked good on the web site but it honestly does not do it justice - it's even better in reality.
It is probably best to have a car because it is situated on its own, several miles from Syracuse/Ortygia. Make sure you get precise instructions on how to reach it from the airport, especially if you arrive in the evening and it's dark.
You can't go wrong with this hotel. I would love to go back soon.
