“Lovely hotel in a good location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 July 2014

We stayed here for 2 nights in a very spacious and comfortable room (205), but with a balcony onto a backstreet rather than the sea. The air conditioning was very welcome, as was the fridge in the room. The hotel isn't very modern, but I wasn't expecting it be in a place like Ortigia. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and spoke reasonable English. As seniors our main problem was the lack of lift, so it was a bit of a struggle up 1 flight of stairs to reception, and 3 more to our room on the 2nd floor. The staff did help us with luggage. We arrived in a rental car and they had arrangements to get it parked in the parking area next to the hotel. Parking isn't easy on Ortigia, but they managed to get me a spot. Breakfast was in the sister hotel over the road. It was a cold breakfast but had some variety on the 2 mornings we had it. The solarium was open and the views across Ortigia and Syracuse were very good.

The first problem we had, was that the staff could hardly speak English; Solarium was not open during our stay; and the gym was very small.

But:
The Staff are really kind.
Internet bandwidth was excellent.
And the breakfast meals were superb.

Just returned from an 8 night break at the Albergo Domus Mariae (annexe) and we had an enjoyable and relaxing stay. A great location on Ortigia with a nice roof terrace and views over the sea to Siracusa beyond.

We stayed in room 104 a large twin bedded room with small balcony overlooking a typical Ortigia backstreet. Any noise at night was well controlled if the windows were closed. The aircon was unobtrusive but adequate.

Perhaps some of room/bathroom fixtures and fittings have seen better days particularly the shower unit.

Beds and pillows can be a matter of personnel taste. The former were quite hard and the latter big and soft which was fine for us.

If you are not a hurry (we weren’t) breakfasts, served in the main hotel, are fine as buffet items are replenished. Liked the home made yoghurt and pear jam to accompany the croissants, also rolls, cold meats, cheese etc…

The staff were friendly and helpful particularly the indomitable Cinzia.

Come with the right expectations and whether you make use of the prayer room or not you will enjoy your stay here!

Either I'm very picky or other reviewers have reviewed a different place. We spent one night in this place, and I have to say that it was distinctly average. It's a bit too old-fashioned for my taste, and I could do without all the religion (It's either run or owned by nuns, and there are four religious services a day you can attend if you need your soul saved - seriously!). I had a booked a large room with double bed six weeks ahead: when we arrived we were given a room with twin beds, and were told they had no more doubles. The air-con could not cope with the heat. The bathroom was quite shabby and the shower one of the worst I've used. To top it all, it was by some margin the most expensive hotel we stayed in during our 5 days on this wonderful island. So, unless you're deeply religious and or don't mind slightly tired-lookinh hotels with useless air-con and below-par facilities, I'd recommend staying elsewhere.

Dear Sir,
thank you for taking your time to write about your experience at Domus Mariae Hotel.
Our hotel is owned and run by Ursuline Sisters, with lay staff: we have a Mass and Vesper per day into our chapel on the first floor at Domus Mariae Benessere (in front of the Hotel) for those who want to spend few minute for meditation.
Our hotel is in an early 1900 restored building in the old town center: it has been one of the first hotel in Ortigia in 1996. On January we renewed air conditioning and water system and we're going to improve other services soon.
We're sorry that you had a twin bedded room; double room with one large bed is on request and on availability: we usually send as kindness an e-mail to Guests when we have to assign two queen size beds. I asked to the reception to pay more attention about this.
We have flexible rates based on availability, not on high and low season; prices depend on how many rooms are already booked: if you book early you'll have the best rate.
On June we're almost always full because of Ancient Drama at the Greek Theater and prices can be a bit higher (average 130 euro per night).

Best regards
Sister Rosamaria

We were there in April with our Golden Retriever and was welcomed by the staff. She helped us with the car park and recommended a great restaurant which we went there twice! Beautiful location with a nice balcony. The only down side will be the breakkfast service, very short of staff where we had to ordered 3 times and waited for 30 mins before getting coffee.
I would highly recommend this nice place in Ortiga, get the rooms with sea view :)
