“Wonderful boutique hotel in a charming city”
Reviewed 3 May 2014

We stayed four nights at this hotel. The building is an old palazzo that has been renovated with the utmost care. It is furnished with modern furniture by a family with great taste. The hotel is family owned and run. The rooms are nice and bath romms very modern. The rooms are super clean and the sheets are changed every day. The only minimal downside is that the rooms facing the courtyard are relatively dark. However, they are very calm in return. The breakfast is awesome. The breakfast room could be a little bigger.
The Signora is watching the scene very carefuly. Sometimes this feels a little too much. The buidling is located close to the bridge to beautiful Ortigia. There are many restaurants close by.
The car parking is rather expensive and in my view bicicle renting should be free.
Other than that there is really nothing to complain. I stayed with my son of 7 years and my partnes of 75 and the hotel suited all of us. This says it all.

An impromptu visit to Siracusa, in tandem with reservations at the Hotel Cavalieri made for a delicious duo. This was our first time in Sicily and having a very limited time we decided to focus just on Siracusa - & doing our homework [reading previous trip advisor reviews] made our hotel choice a no-brainer.

Emblematic of the rich cultural history of Ortigia, the Cavalieri captures a sophisticated charm of its own. The owners were very gracious and extremely helpful sorting out some special requests we had. The staff were all very courteous and attentive.

Boutique hotels, that are privately owned and managed, provide a fantastic "home base" from which to experience a new city. The aesthetics of such establishments. as a rule, reflect the passion and commitment of the ownership & the Hotel Cavalieri exemplifies this standard at its best.

It is definitely on our favorites list and we look forward to another "bello" visit soon!

A restored mansion, run by lovely, helpful people. it is close enough to the island for easy walking but it much handier for parking and less tourists. Fine breakfast. Lovely lounge area. Highly recommended.

We recently spent a few nights at this hotel in Siracusa, Sicily. The hotel was perfectly located only blocks away from the bridge to Ortigia. At first blush, the hotel has a very clean, modern appearance. In fact, the only part of my room that wasn't seemingly clean was the mildew in the shower.

When we first got into our rooms we were pleasantly suprised by the furnishings in the room, etc. The room was spacious, well appointed and tastefully decorated. As the stay progressed shortly thereafter, we found out there are several rules imposed on guests staying at the hotel. These rules (that I've never heard of before in my 53 years of life and travel all over the world at countless luxury hotels) are as follows (verbatim, right out of the friendly guest directory found printed in each room):

1. Strollers, golf equipment and any other bulky object has to be deposited at the reception. Reception decides which object has to be deposited.

NICE! Makes you wonder what else they consider too "bulky" to be housed in one's room!

2. We kindly remind that Hotel Cavalieri is entirely a non smoking area. Smokers are welcome on the terrace, third floor.

So if the whole hotel is non smoking, how are they allowing folks to smoke on their terrace?

3. We kindly ask not iron and wash in the room.

Why not? I've NEVER heard either of these ridiculous rules anywhere in my entire life!

4. We kindly ask you to not put personal items into the minibar.

Since Rule 5 says you can't bring your own food or drinks into the hotel why would a guest want to buy anything out of the mini bar from this greedy hotel anyway?

5. We kindly ask you to not bring food and beverages into the hotel.

This one incensed me. There is absolutely no logical explanation for this other than greed. (See Rule 4 above).

Now for the UNWRITTEN RULES:

6. If it's raining, be sure to close your window. It rained one night during our stay. At 11:00 pm (just afer I fell asleep) we got a call from the reception desk asking us to close our window since it was supposed to rain that night. REALLY??? We ignored the request since it didn't make any sense to us. About 5 minutes later the reception desk called again and said, "The reason you must close the window is because it's supposed to rain very heavily tonight.".... AGAIN.... REALLY???????? So they wake me up to tell me to do something unreasonable, then 5 minutes later wake me up again because they are watching me and see that I haven't closed my window yet?????? After that point we were so uncomfortable staying at this hotel knowing that they were watching our every move that we couldn't wait to get out of there!

7. Last but not least, when we came into the hotel carrying umbrellas on a rainy day, the receptionist asked us twice to leave our umbrellas at the front desk if they were wet. We declined this ridiculous request too. ARE THESE PEOPLE INSANE?????

FINAL Thoughts: These people need to realize that their business is CUSTOMER-BASED. If they can't manage to allow their guests to enjoy their stay, these guests (and all of their friends) will never come back... me included!

I found this quaint hotel on Trip Advisor (in the car on our way into Syracuse--driving from Catania). We are on a 3 week "viaggio" in Italy with no particular itinerary so its nice to have Trip Advisor to help guide us! The other reviews for this hotel led us here. And we were not disappointed! When we pulled up, a gentleman came outside immediately to assist us...showed us the room and then helped with bags.
He then pulled out a map and showed us all of the sites to see plus restaurants along the way. The hotel is close to shops/restaurants etc. The room is very comfortable (bed too!) and the bathroom is wonderful as well. Breakfast was excellent. . The owner (Senora) even printed out maps for us before we left as we were heading west along the coast and weren't quite sure where we'd be stopping -- she gave us many options. All staff we met were more than helpful and truly wanted us to enjoy our visit. We only stayed one night but wouldn't hesitate to return and I would certainly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Syracuse!!

I travelled to Scilily with my fluent Italian friend and found this little gem before I left on the Internet. It was fantastic.A family owned it and her two children who graduated as Architects in Florence designed the renovation, hence the gorgeous design feel.A beautiful Italian style hotel but with a modern designer decor mixed with beautiful pieces of furniture, old and new. The elegant lady owner running it was very fussy and particular and not a spec of dust etc to be seen. The breakfast was amazing as was service, probably the best I have been to in Europe. It's location is perfect so you can walk a few mins to the centre of the old town. I highly recommend this hotel

Room Tip: There were only 16 rooms, ours was overlooking the street but there was no noise.

We stayed here for 4 nights on our way from Fontane Bianche to Taormina.

Beautiful hotel!

We had a wonderful duplex room (almost an apartment) that just sang to us.

The staff were superb (especially our breakfast server - give her a payrise please!). Helpful, accommodating, and very knowledgable.

The breakfast was extremely good for Italy (if you've been before you know what I mean) - locally sourced products and very fresh fruit etc. (Although, as per everywhere in Italy, the fruit juice was from a carton - why does everyone do this when there is such an abundance of fresh fruit everywhere?!!!).

They also had (for Italy) a very good WiFi policy - no need to log on/off - no expiring cryptic passwords - brilliant and respect for this - it's very rare for some reason in this country.

Would definitely stay there again - it's not the cheapest, and you're not in the centre of Ortigia, but we actually saw this as a bonus. Nice 10 min walk to the end of the island, and nice walk back at night after a ridiculously large meal :)

Room Tip: No idea! I suspect they're all great. We were in No 1 which was pretty much a duplex apartment...

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Hotel Cavalieri, at the edge of the ancient city center, is a case in point; this old aristocratic residence belongs to a family of architects and designers, who've turned its 19th-century halls and rooms into a charmingly eclectic, thoroughly contemporary boutique hotel. The location, on Via Malta, is just to the mainland side of the bridge to Ortygia, which is the original ancient Greek settlement. This means easy access by day and a measure of peace by night. As does the hotel itself - these old walls shut out the noise, sealing guests in to a fantasy of noble life. It's not a period piece, though; along with the well-preserved original architecture you'll find all manner of contemporary touches, rooms featuring brand-new bath fixtures, beds and electronics and furnished with mid-century design classics. With few rooms it's perhaps a bit bigger than it feels - from within the rooms you'd be hard pressed not to imagine you're the old house's sole resident. ... more   less
