We chose this hotel after hearing such great reviews about the views and also because it was one of the few more 'affordable' places in Taormina. Nowhere in Taormina is cheap but this was at the better end of the scale for our budget.

The views are fantastic, out over the sea and nearby bay with great views of etna in the distance too. The grounds of the hotel are very well kept and frame this stunning view impressively.

Like much of Taormina the hotel is trapped in a time warp, which of course was part of the appeal for us. It gave the hotel a real charm and seperated it from the multitude of blande concrete hotels we all stay at when we are away. Unfortunately in the area where perhaps an update matters most, the rooms this is where the hotel fails its guests. Sensitive modern updates need to be made and the charm of the hotel would be enhanced.

The rooms have twin beds with hard mattresses. The addition of a fridge is essential and a kettle would be nice. The bathroom was in poor condition, sink cracked and shower cubicle must have been 30 years old. The shower took a full 5 minutes for hot water to come through, which is hypocritical on an island which pleads, quite rightly, for its visitors to save water. Finally the TV, did have cable, one channel in English which was CNN !! Why? The hotel was full of Brits and Germans, we don't want to see an American news channel that thinks international news is a novelty extra. This channel didn't work in any case. The hotel were quick to come and fix but the tuning went again in a couple of days, so we gave up. I don't go on holiday to watch TV I should add but nice to have some options to crash out to after a long day in the sun.

We did the trip with Thomson up Etna which was pricey at E89 but was quite an experience with coach, cable car and tractor tyre buses to get you to the summit. Be warned if you go to the crater, however hot the day seems it was freezing, so wrap up warm.

We also did the cable car down to lower Taormina to the beautiful island, not a golden sandy beach but worth a trip down for lunch and a paddle. We also took the bus from Taormina to Castelmolia. Get the bus from the bus station opposite the cabe car station. Tickets sold in the booth from a guy who spoke english, no hassle and cheap.

We found the food consistently good in every restaurant. I have done additional reviews for restaurants, Tiramisu, D'Niro, Trocadero, Lucchio's amongst others.

The location of this hotel is breathtaking!
When we arrived, we drove up a long winding road and found the hotel perched on top.
There was free onsite parking, which was great.
The gentlemen at reception checked as in and showed us around the building. It is very beautiful with a big living room for the guests, with a piano, books and free Internet.
The view from this room and the adjoining balcony is absolutely amazing. The hotel overlooks the sea and horizon, with the most beautiful sunsets at night.
The room itself isn’t really anything too exciting. Everything is made of brown wood and rather outdated. The bathroom is also quite old, with some whistles and squeals when you use the hot water. But the view when you step out of your room, onto your own little section of the verandah, helps you see past it.
The breakfast was very nice, with all the usual Italian goodies and fresh espresso.
All in all, we thought the rooms could do with a makeover, but the amazing view and lovely staff made our stay a lovely one.

We had a beautiful view of the water with a second floor room with terrace. Ask for the corner room and you can see Etna too. A terracotta terrace with flowering cacti made it the perfect area to relax with friends and a little Nero d'Avalo wine. The owner Carlo was accommodating but Luigi was the best. Pick a night when those two play piano and guitar. Carlo was more classical and Luigi like a little Pop. we had a great time singing along, a little wine and making new friends. Parking is tough if you have a big car and the 10 minute walk to town is no problem if you can handle steps. We stayed 3 nights with no regrets. We would definitely return.

I have just returned from a weeks stay at the Bel Soggiorno, the hotel has a beautiful setting and is family run. The views from the hotel look out over Mount Etna from one side and the sea. My room had a lovely shared terrace that looked out over the sea, the room was cleaned everyday with fresh bed linen and good air conditioning. The bedroom had a small tv and twin beds and the bathroom had a small shower, there were no fridge or tea/coffee facilities in the room though.
The breakfast was very basic, bread, cheese, cereal and yoghurt and not much else. There is no swimming pool and the nearest place to sunbathe is the beach which can be accessed by cable car or bus from Taormina town centre. The town centre is a good 15-20 minute uphill walk, I would not recommend staying here to anyone with mobililty difficulties or unfit, the uphill walk is a struggle!
There is a sort of small "honesty bar" to get some drinks but it is very limited.
Although the hotel is quite basic it has an absolutely stunning setting and a gorgeous garden terrace that looks out over Etna. The staff are very polite and helpful and I would recommend the hotel.

the reason for our stay at the bel soggiorno was to attend our daughters wedding. this is no boutique hotel, family run by mother and son. the rooms were very basic, the shower was a squeeze, but that said, the rooms were cleaned every day, bed sheets changed during our one week stay and clean towels every day. we had no problem with the breakfast which was buffet style and there was ample space to sit outside on the terraces. the only downside to the breakfast was the coffee which you could stand a spoon in, asked for cappucino, that was good. the bel soggiorno has old world charm. yes, the floor tiles in the dining area could have been replaced but my word, the view from our terrace was divine and more. the staff were very courteous and helpful, the son spoke good english and didn't charge for 2 glasses of wine and phone calls my friends made back to england. on our last night we arrived back from dining and Carlos, the son and Luigi the receptionist were in the dining area playing the piano and guitar. they apparently have just started doing this on a Saturday night. Carlos was excellent on the piano and played a wide range of tunes from Clayderman, James Taylor and the theme from the Godfather which seemed quite appropriate. We loved every minute of our stay but the only major downside is the steps across the road from the hotel which avoids the dreadful roads. If anyone has health problems or are overweight, do not stay here, the next level up would be better. I would definately stay here again but only for a week, any more and you would be hard pushed to find things to do. The sight of Mount Etna was great and we did see a red glow one night from the top which quite a few people commented on.
