What we really liked about this trip, was the passion with which Eddy carries out the tour.
It is a full day trip on the Northern side of Mount Etna and the Alcantra valley.
It was a small group, unlike the large bus trips organised by other tour operators.
The hiking is easy, so anyone can do it.
Book in advance as it can be hard to get hold of Eddy when he is leading a tour.
We were very lucky to get on one of his excursions at short notice.
This excursion was also very good value at €75 per person for a full day excursion.
Highly recommended!

We really enjoyed our day out with Eddy doing the Etna Alacantra Discovery. At 75 euro this is a good value day tour as most others charge a lot more if you come from Taormina. You are picked up and spend the day in one of the comfortable and well maintained 4wD cars. Eddy drives one car and his drivers the others. I saw some other reviewers who have given a low score when one of the drivers was the tour guide and I can appreciate this - it is worth ensuring that you are booking on a day when Eddy will be the guide. Don't worry if you are not in his car, he sets up walkie talkies to the other cars so you can all hear his narration when driving and then of course at the stops you are all together. Depending on the group Eddy gives his explanations in English then in German, French and Italian.

This is a tour for those who are interested in Etna's history and geology with a bit of activity. First stop is a small town to see the local architecture and hear about then region. The drive up the mountain crosses interesting sights of the lava flows. Then a stop to walk down inside one of the lava holes. From there it has some cross country driving to a valley that gives an excellent feeling of the vastness of the lava flows and you enjoy a 15 minute walk each way. From there you drive up to the highest point of the tour 1900/2000m where you get out for about 90 minutes walking around extinct craters with very good views. All the time Eddy stops to give detail explanations. The one piece of advice I would give is that this is a tour for those interested in learning quite a lot about the volcano and you need to be patient because of the time taken repeating the explanations in various languages. If you prefer a quick paced highlights tour rather than learning about the geology of volcanos then it is not the right tour for you. Similarly I wouldn't recommend a tour of this length for you children.

Lunch was at a mountain restaurant Ragubo with delicious food at very reasonable prices. Many people went with the homemade macaroni. Personally I chose the lamb which was very well cooked and a huge portion.

The route back goes via Alacantra where you go down a long staircase (about 200 steps) to a gorge with its distinctive basalt rocks. It is enjoyable in summer to go for a short swim in summer though the water is bracing. We went on a warm day in summer but with the breeze, some clouds and altitude it was not uncomfortable. It was fine just to wear a shirt and either shorts or hiking trousers. Trainers or hiking shoes need to be warn. To take a swim wear your swimwear and bring a small towel that you can leave in the car until needed.

It was a long day starting at 8:30 and finishes 5:30 or later. Great value for the cost and a very good insight into Etna.

Beautiful town, sitting on the edge of a mountain.
A steep walk, or a ride on a cable-car takes you up to the lovely shopping streets of Taormina.
Wonderful views. Delicious gelato. Pricey where we sat, but a once in a life-time experience, worth it!

This was a first for me in Sicily. June 2013. Beautiful sunny skies everyday. Wonderful and friendly people. So much history and artifacts to explore. Visited most of the cities around the island. Grape vine fields, olive farms and citrus. Enjoyed playing 4 friendly soccer games with the locals in Messina, Catania & Ribera. Just an overall great experience and a nice place to visit where uninhabited beaches (although lots of flat stoned beaches) are yours to explore.

Taormina is different town to be visited. On the top of a hill overlooking the ocean is an unforgetable sightseen. Giardino Naxos is a nice place, mainly the hotel that we stayed, Giardino Naxos Hotel.
