Will never forget the amazing day 4 of us spent on a private tour with Eddy who brought Etna and Sicily to life. The day began at 08.30 and ended at 19.00, we were absolutely exhausted not just physically but emotionally from the experience of seeing such amazing geography and mentally from taking in so much fascinating information. This active volcano really is enormous, there are so many different parts that must be seen. Eddy tailored the day perfectly to our needs. Take walking boots, suncream, water and layers of light clothing. Be prepared for strong wind and to see sights you thought you would never witness. A private tour with Eddy was worth every last euro. I cannot recommend his professionalism and expertise strongly enough. Thank you Eddy - from the geologist and the rest of us.

We were on a cruise and it was really spectacular to wake up and find Mount Etna as the backdrop. We were docked in Catania and booked an excursion to Taormina. We decided not to go to the top of Etna, so were transported by coach for about an hour to reach our destination. On the way we had spectacular views of Mt Etna and the coastline. Taormina is in an elevated position and once we left the coach we had to go by lift upto the town. The transfer by lift is quite crowded and tedious but necessary if you do not wish to climb 7 flights of stairs. At the top we enjoyed a panoramic view of the coast and then we were led by our guide through the delightful town. Taormina is very very pretty and has narrow, quirky alley ways and some beautiful churches. Pretty balconies are festooned with flowers. It is overridden with tourists but there is good reason for this as it is a delightful town with lovely bars, restaurants and cafes. We were offered a taste of the locally produced candied peel which was delicious. At the far end of the town we were led to a Greek/Roman ampitheatre. This is interesting historically but there are also some lovely panoramic views of Mt Etna, the coast and the town of Taormina. On our return to Catania the guide took us through the city and pointed out some buildings of architectural interest. Do go to Taormina. It is lovely.

We spent a fantastic day touring around Etna. Our guide Eddy is by far the most knowledgeable guide I've ever met. He is an archeologist with passion for vulcanos, and I could praise him, but no need, just read the other reviews. Our tour included visits to villages close to Etna, lava caves, trekking, lunch at Rifugio Ragabo and Alcantara gorges. During the tour Eddy provided us with an intriguing overview of Etnas and Sicilys history. We made a ca. two hour trekking tour around Monte Nero. The trekking tour was adjusted to our group, we also had an option of a shorter tour, but all us were fit to climb the craters so we chose the longer option. Alcantara gorges is a must see, but I would have been happy just seeing the magnificent mountain.

The first time I visited Sicily I was thrilled just to see Etna smoking gently in the distance. On my second visit I wanted someone to take me beyond the picture-postcard view of the volcano and so signed up, together with my husband and children (aged 19 and 17), for the Etna-Alcantara off-road excursion. Boy, was that a great decision. Not only did Eddy give us a broad geological and historical context for this particular volcano, he enthused us with his passion for our living planet. He also helped us to better understand what it means to live alongside Etna on a daily basis. Though we did meet other groups along the way, the size of the Legendary Sicily party (14) meant that the excursion felt really rather exclusive.
I should add that we (as an English family with a pitiful knowledge of Italian) greatly appreciated Eddy’s clear, articulate and stimulating delivery, while I (as a mother of teenagers) particularly appreciated that he was able to facilitate a thrilling day and one which is bound to become part of our family folklore.
