Belmond Grand Hotel Timeo

Grand Hotel Timeo.

This beautiful old hotel is right next door to the entrance to the Greek Theatre. Parts of the auditorium can even be seen from the hotel terrace.
The service from Luigi the head bar man is charming and experienced- once he hears your name, he remembers it for the rest of your stay.
The concierges, as would be expected, are full of helpful information about where to go & what to see.
Our room was set in the extensive, lemon blossom scented  garden with a terrace overlooking Mount Etna & the sea. The bathroom did not contain a bath, but the huge marble shower meant that we didn't miss a bathtub.
A couple of things jarred the experience: We were kindly sent a welcome note & a plate of pastries.... But they were addressed to someone else! Also the evening turndown service was not attempted until almost 10pm- which if you've had a tiring day sightseeing, or a long journey to Taormina seems far too late.
The pool area is not huge, but is managed efficiently by the staff who offer nice touches such as lemon granita in the afternoon & cool Evian water sprays when the sun gets too hot. The pool is kept at a constant 29 degrees.

While we were there, Mount Etna erupted & we woke to find everything outside  covered in black gritty ash- which the hotel staff quickly swept away.

This hotel is very nice, but the Hotel Splendido in Portofino outshines it in so many ways.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to write us your precious feedback and we really appreciate it.

We will be happy to share your kind words with the bar, the concierge and the pool team who will be encouraged by your remarks.

We are really sorry to learn that some of our services did not meet your expectation to the fullest and would like to inform you that the housekeeping turndown shift starts at 7pm to 10pm. If we receive any request to make it earlier we normally try to do our best to satisfy our clients. We are therefore very sorry that in your case this was not met.
The welcome gift was definitely assigned for you but we regrettably made a mistake with the welcome note: we make amend for it.

We apologise once more for the inconveniences that this may have caused and you may rest assured that we are actively working to improve our service levels and your feedback has proved to be invaluable.

We truly hope to have the pleasure to welcome you back soon at the Grand Hotel Timeo and in the meantime we are delighted to remain at your full disposal for any further assistance you may require.

Best regards

We booked for 3 nights in April and were upgraded to a two-bedroom Presidential suite overlooking the bay and Mt. Etna. The hotel is right next to Teatro Greco. The suite is huge and very comfortable. The terrace has a gazebo and a Jacuzzi at the far end. Breakfast on our terrace was a wonderful experience. However, if you are a light sleeper staying in the room above the entrance, you will not get any sleep because 3 times during the night you will be woken up by the noise from rubbish collecting. We tried to complain about it but to no avail. The concierge was very helpful in giving us good recommendations for dinner and we had some wonderful meals in Taormina. However, when we asked the concierge if he could arrange to send a few bottles of olive oil that we bought in Taormina back home, he was happy to do it but as he was quite busy dealing with inquiries and we had a plane to catch, he asked us to leave our credit card details and once he received a quotation from the post office, he would email us for our confirmation. However, it turned out that he never asked for our confirmation and shipped the package by DHL which cost EUR198 to Hong Kong. The olive oil cost only EUR30! If we had known about the cost, we would not even consider shipping them. The concierge sent an apologetic email and offered to refund half the shipping cost which we accepted but he never responded after that despite several emails chasing him. This experience has left a bitter taste in our mouth! There is really nothing wrong with the hotel but sometimes the service or the lack of it really ruins everything.

Room Tip: Don't stay in rooms near the entrance or you will surely be woken up during the night due to the...

Dear Guest,

thank you so much for taking the time to send your feedback regarding the recent stay with us and we greatly appreciate it.
We are very sorry to learn that you experienced some inconveniences during your stay and we would like to inform you that regarding the noise issue we finally found a way to agree with the company that collects the garbage to take it from another place avoiding the night and morning disturbance.
Concerning the misunderstanding of the oil shipment we would like to inform you that after many enquiries, before giving you the final price, we were very surprised like you, about the excessive costs for the international shipping through the couriers and the Italian post system. We have done our best to receive the best possible costs, considering it was a package of 8KG. The actual cost of shipping was 330€, which we were able to reduce thanks to a 40% discount from the courier, which brought the total cost down to 198€.
Usually, we require at least 24 hours of notice to organise international shipping, timing that allows us to have everything packed and weighted in order to give a quote to our guests before they depart the Hotel. In your case we decided to bend our rules since you really wanted to be able to bring these oils back home, but you also had to leave in a hurry.
We might have misunderstood each other, but we think you only told us to ship the package and forward you the shipping details, which we did. Once the courier collected the oils to pack them and weight them, he sent us an email with the shipping details and the tracking information.
We always have been in contact with you to inform you about the latest developments of your shipping. Furthermore in order to meet half way we agreed on baring 50% of the cost and proceed immediately with the refund on you credit card informing you by mail once this procedure has been completed.
We do apologize again for the inconvenience that this may have caused you and we hope to have the possibility to welcome you again and are delighted to remain at your full personal disposal for any further information or assistance you may require.

Best regards

We stayed for four nights and from the moment we entered the hotel we were treated wonderfully. We couldn't fault the hotel in any respect and this was trully a holiday. Obviously one takes a deep breath when getting the bill but if you are working to a budget this isn't the place to go!

Room Tip: we had a ocean view with a balcony which was excellent.

The Grand Hotel Timeo is well named as it is so luxurious and grand. The hotel is a most special place and well deserves it's reputation. From the moment we arrived, we were made feel welcome and special by all the staff. Indeed, we had the privilege of being upgraded to the presidential suite - we really felt we were in heaven. The hotel is perfectly located right in town, but is sheltered from any noise by the extensive surrounding grounds which are beautifully maintained and filled with bougainvillea and roses and geraniums. Our suite was unsurpassable and our stay was perfect and will remain in our memories along with the hotel and staff forever. The hotel itself is beautiful and full of character but it has all the amenities you would expect from a luxury hotel such as a heated pool. gym, health spa, comfortable large beds with luxury sheets, fluffy towels and robes, designer amenities, twice daily maid service (they even hang your clothes for you), luxury marble bathrooms, climate controlled air-conditioning and large living areas. The view is unsurpassable and trumps all other hotels in it's category. You can see over the beautiful sloping grounds right down to the beautiful bay of Taormina on one side, the Greek theatre on another side and Mount Etna on the other. The food is fantastic, from starters to desserts and there is such a choice with specials changing each evening also - that you never have to eat the same thing if you choose the half-board option and the breakfasts and lunch are also fantastic. For seafood fans like us, there is a choice form prawns to lobster to crayfish to sea bass all fresh and delicious. The staff are also fantastic and are friendly but efficient - hello especially to Domenico and Frederiqua and thanks so much for making us feel so special. The front of house staff are efficient, welcoming and they do their utmost to ensure that you, as their guests, are completely happy and they will assist you in arranging excursions or suggesting things to do to suit your requirements. There is so much to do in Taormina and everything is close to the hotel - although this is such a special place, you will not want to leave it !!!! Thank you so much to all the staff for our most memorable and special vacation which will stay with us forever. We will most certainly return to Sicily and we would never stay anywhere else other than the Grand Hotel Timeo and we look forward to our next stay with you.

Room Tip: All rooms are luxurious and have fantastic views and are air-conditioned. Although it is right in to...

Stayed five nights in April in top floor of Villa Flora with a great rooftop patio overlooking the bay and Mt. Etna. The grounds and everything in the hotel is beautiful and the room is very comfortable and luxurious. The breakfast buffet is truly world class and I have hundreds of top hotels to compare with. The cappuccino foam on top is in the shape of a flower and the made to order selections are highly detailed, not typical breakfast food. The town is wonderful to walk around and the location is perfect, right on the Greek Theater walking street. But the most amazing thing about this hotel is the service, from everyone here; we have never received such good service, professional yet down to earth. Every staff member calls me by name and goes out of their way to serve us.

Only complaint is not with the hotel but beware, if you drive here you will get LOST! We got lost arriving even though we kept passing by the hotel, just impossible to get onto the correct one way streets. When we drove to a nearby town (leaving is simple) we got lost coming back even though I was sure I knew the trick. But that is part of the charm I guess......once you arrive you're in heaven. Finding perfection isn't always simple!

It was a wonderful stay in heaven...
This hotel is perfectly located, in the old part of Taormina city, overseeing the sea, with a direct view on the Greek theater.
The garden is outstanding and very well maintained, with different levels (several terraces, great pool...).
The food is gorgeous and the service very friendly and professional.
It fully deserves its 5 stars and it is hard to move away from this marvelous place and not to compare any future hotels to this place. Cannot become a reference as it is THE reference for perfection.

Advance planning on arrival by car a must... when you approach the Porta Catania arch
the is a sign with many hotels which says the Timeo is straight ahead, which is true for PEDESTRIANS and TAXIS... ask the hotel for PDF of how to navigate to the lot and a golf cart will carry you up to the hotel.... this is beyond GPS navigation.

The hotel is SPLENDID and even at the price is a guaranteed MEMORY MAKER.
The town is highly touristic but carries it well. The Timeo is the town's gem and tours to the Greek Theatre stop at thehotel's gates to peer in and hear its extraordinary history.

Consider joining the Leaders Club for extra attention. Off season values are FAB.
The pool is heated which is rare in Italy. Breakfast is a gourmet feast which can carry you till dinner.

Room Tip: Consider joining the Leaders Club for $100 to heighten your chances of an upgrade.
