Grand Hotel Timeo.
This beautiful old hotel is right next door to the entrance to the Greek Theatre. Parts of the auditorium can even be seen from the hotel terrace.
The service from Luigi the head bar man is charming and experienced- once he hears your name, he remembers it for the rest of your stay.
The concierges, as would be expected, are full of helpful information about where to go & what to see.
Our room was set in the extensive, lemon blossom scented garden with a terrace overlooking Mount Etna & the sea. The bathroom did not contain a bath, but the huge marble shower meant that we didn't miss a bathtub.
A couple of things jarred the experience: We were kindly sent a welcome note & a plate of pastries.... But they were addressed to someone else! Also the evening turndown service was not attempted until almost 10pm- which if you've had a tiring day sightseeing, or a long journey to Taormina seems far too late.
The pool area is not huge, but is managed efficiently by the staff who offer nice touches such as lemon granita in the afternoon & cool Evian water sprays when the sun gets too hot. The pool is kept at a constant 29 degrees.
While we were there, Mount Etna erupted & we woke to find everything outside covered in black gritty ash- which the hotel staff quickly swept away.
This hotel is very nice, but the Hotel Splendido in Portofino outshines it in so many ways.
