It is hard not to go overboard when describing this hotel. From the first moment when you drive up, you are greeted courteously and efficiently. The hotel is in central Taormina next to the Greek Theatre and the front entrance is at the end of a shopping street so as you drive up you may be a little concerned. Don't be. As you walk through the front gate and into the little front walkway you leave the bustle of Taormina behind. This was the first hotel in Taormina and the building is a venerable old one in the ITalian style. At the front desk the Reception Manager Davide and his staff together with all the concierges will greet you and deal with your queries perfectly.
We would recommend a room in the main building and if you can, get one with a terrace or balcony overlooking the gardens the sea and Mount Etna. We had a deluxe sea view room with a good sized balcony. It was furnished vary comfortably-wonderful bed linen and pillows- and had everything you would need. The housekeeping is top notch with an evening turndown as standard. Water is provided at night and the toiletries are good.
Breakfast and dinner are taken on an outdoor terrace which overlooks the wonderful views. The breakfast is particularly good , The dinner menu is varied and has Sicilian specialities as well as "normal" Italian food. At every meal the maitre D and his staff are impeccable- friendly and efficient .
Everything-the room, food, service, setting and views - adds up to make this an outstanding hotel.
We stayed for one week and could easily have stayed for longer.
We had only one complaint-after one night we realised that our room was under the breakfast terrace and being very light sleepers we had heard the early breakfast scraping of chairs and tables etc. We mentioned this to the REception Manager Davide and before we had even finished our sentence he was on the computer checking how he could change our room and sort out the issue. This was accomplished and we did not have to re-pack-we took our valuables and the housekeeping staff moving everything perfectly to our new room. That evening a bottle of champagne was delivered with a hand-written note from the manager.
So our room recommendation would be-stay in the main hotel and get a view. If you are a light sleeper have a room with a high number (e.g 230 not 204) on any floor so that you are away from the terrace.
