“GREAT HOTEL & LOCATION !!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 June 2014

We loved the hotel. We had a beautiful room with a terrace overlooking the see. All services were upscale. The breakfast salon has a great view , service is very good. The indoor patio is lovely, for afternoon cocktails.

I have wanted to stay at this hotel since first seeing it from an excursion bus window in 1993. We finally returned to beautiful Taormina and my dream came true this past week. The hotel is a wonderful old complex that was a palace converted to monastery, converted to German WW2 headquarters, converted to hotel. This history makes it so charming and wonderful in itself, but add to it the fact that you are perched on a cliff overlooking the Mediterranean on one side and smoking Mt Etna on the other, while surrounded by bougainvillea studded gardens and terraces, and you have a real "movie setting" feeling. We found the staff to be helpful and friendly, but the waiters were not as solicitous as one would expect considering the prices of the dining and cocktails. Finished plates were left in front of us way too long as we lingered over a coffee, or returned from the breakfast buffet with another course and new plate.
Speaking of the breakfast buffet, it was very lavish with all kinds of choices, but a glaring disappointment was that in this land of abundant fresh fruit, the fruit offered was mostly canned, with some fresh pineapple and oranges. Where were the delicious melons that were offered at other meals with proscuitto at a hefty price? Where were the fresh strawberries that we saw being delivered? At prices of over $400/night, one would expect that!
The other thing that one would expect at those prices is complimentary internet. Not only did they charge for WiFi in the rooms, but it was such a slow connection and so intermittent, people would complain even if it were free!
All in all, we had a lovely stay at this hotel, but don't expect perfect air conditioning or rooms that might not have a musty smell in this very old property. That's not to say that the rooms were not beautiful. They were, but you must expect some inconveniences in a building with this history, and take it as going along with the charm. Those issues cannot really be helped, but the breakfasts and the internet could definitely be improved to match the charges.

Room Tip: Pay the premium for a sea view. That's what you're here for.

Dear Guest,
let us thank you for your feedback. Positive and negative comments are very important for us because they let us known something more of our hotel. Regarding Buffet Breakfast I am very sorry that you missed the fresh white melon that it comes with oranges and pineapple. Anyway please let me apologies for the inconveniences that you had at breakfast.

There is little wrong about this place. The location within Taormina is good ( central yet quiet ), the historical connotations are excellent yet the comfort is everywhere. The views are superb right from the room and from the breakfast area. The gardens are magnificent, the staff helpful. So what can be improved ? Free Wifi in the rooms ( at present it is free in the common areas but paying in the rooms ), the choice of music in the cloister area ( relaxing bar type garden place ). Why do we need music at all in a place like this ? The noise of the road below can be a pain when one lies at the pool ( at least change the manhole cover which each car driving past dislodge ). For the rest ....heaven except maybe for the tariffs which I would label as purgatory !
By the way, be prepared to walk because the place is big.

Room Tip: a room with a sea view is a must

We arrived in a rented Fiat 500 (to get the real Italian feeling and very useful too, driving in the narrow streets) and from the moment we were met by a very friendly and helpfull staff. We were impressed by the atmosphere in this old monastery. A comfortable room with a terrace and view over the sea, the excellent and original cuisine in the ** restaurant made our stay one we will always remember. We will return, because of Taormina, but also because of San Domenico palace, that's for sure.

Part of the Leading Hotels of the World so our expectations were high of this 5 star rated hotel. To me it does not quite warrant this rating. The situation of the hotel is superb just minutes from the town of Taormina. Our room was lovely with wonderful views of the bay. However, we were fortunate to have a junior suite so we had plenty of room with a spacious lounge area.
Bathroom was large as well. We did not have a large terrace.
With this property because it was a former convent all rooms are different. Some are extremely small with no terraces and others somewhat larger with balconies or large terraces.
My advice? Check out your room first before unpacking to avoid disappointment.
This hotel needs to be redesigned as well one had to go through a labyrinth of hallways, gardens and corridors to find the room, and there's not always someone to help. If they do, they just point the way. 5 star? Take me to the room please!
The staff of the hotel are pleasant enough but not top notch apart from restaurant and bar personnel. Room service was extremely slow we had to call four times before giving up. Also, our room was not made up until late in the afternoon. 5 star?
Breakfast on the terrace is a highlight. Food superb with so much choice and wonderful surroundings.
The pool area in my opinion is not that of a 5 star . It needs upgrading . it's long enough but not wide. Also the walking areas are very limited. 5 star? Could not get a swim until 0900 and it closes at 1830.
In conclusion , management need to take a look at themselves now and again

Room Tip: Look at your room first before unpacking

Dear Guest,
we would like to thank you for the impression wrote on Trip Advisor. As you known and especially here in Italy it is not so easy to redesign an Historical building that has its origin in the far 1376.
Anyway we will take good care of your suggestions, regarding the services and staff.
Best regards
Luisa Cacopardo.

We stayed here at the beginning of June 2014 as part of a Sicily Tauck Tour. The corridors, courtyard and gardens are beautiful. We thank the bar staff for looking after us in the courtyard and allowing us to eat our pizza from the nearby shop, for lunch, in the courtyard.
We had a room with a terrace that overlooked the bay. This was beautiful, it was a pity that it was difficult to use the bathroom. It was very small with a shower in the bath, and with no floor drain it was necessary to keep the thick fabric shower curtain in the bath for a shower. This would collect bacteria and fungus and so is not very hygienic.
To maintain balance, I grabbed the shower pole, however, it detached from the shower head and I struggled to put it back together again. There were no other safety poles to grab.
Also, to get the toilet to flush properly, you had to make sure your thumb was in exactly the right place on the flushing button.
We had a "farewell dinner" in the main dining room, which suffers from the fact that the kitchen is a very long way away, near the breakfast dinning room location.
We had an inclusive Wi-Fi package from Tauck, however the service kept dropping in and out, so we gave up!!!!
We had to be ready promptly for our daily tours and this would have been much easier if all of the above flowed smoothly.
We also had a thin door to the next room.
Thank you to the hotel for giving us a late check out, it was much appreciated before our 3 days of flying back to Australia.

Room Tip: Level two with a terrace

We chose the San Domenico as our honeymoon hotel owing to its history and outside spaces. We stayed for a week at the beginning of June 2014. The outside spaces really are spectacular; the gardens are extremely well kept and the swimming pool and surrounding area is spotless and the staff brilliant down there.

However; there are areas for improvement. Firstly the WIFI which I know people have commented on; this needs to be free everywhere considering the price you pay. We had a sea view deluxe room and at 561 euros a night I think is overpriced. The balcony had a nice view but the sunbeds up there need a cushion like the ones by the pool and the room (particulary the bathroom) needs alot of updating. The bathroom toiletries are only molten brown and the smell often was not pleasant. Even though we brough our own mosquito plug ins we got bitten alot which was unusual as we had slaready been in Sicily 10 days before this and not had one.

The staff definitely need a few tips on customer service and cracking a smile occasionally. The only staff that were not rude in this way were the cleaners, the evening bar staff in the first courtyard and one of the male reception staff (wish I had taken his name). All the others you had to consistently repeat what you were asking, with a scowling face all the time you were asking and then incorrect or incoherent information given. After a few attempts at using them I gave up and used our previous hotel (El Jebel) for assistance.

We ate at the michelin star restaurant, for one night and the service was good there. Food was nice but overpriced. There are cheaper and just as good places to eat in the town.

Overall was OK but we would not return; in favour of better rooms and better value elsewhere in the town. Overall gardens are wonderful; shame you can't just visit these!
