“The Perfectly Palatial San Domenico Palace”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 June 2014

There are two hotels in Taormina that we would recommend and this was our first choice. The San Domenico Palace is a former monastery parts of which date back to the 14th century. It stands at the Western end of the upper area of Taormina with fantastic views from the front over the sea and towards Etna.

The public areas are large and impressive with many relics and antiques from the monastery. In the central area is the cloisters with comfortable seating beneath palm trees and bougainvillea. Drinks are served in this area and a pianist entertains at night.

Our room was a junior suite in spacious lofty rooms comprising the bedroom, en suite and a sitting area with doors opening onto a large terrace with sun loungers and a table and chairs. The view from the terrace was breathtaking. Definitely worth getting a room with a sea view at the highest price you can afford as some of the rooms are smaller.

The breakfast buffet was extensive and of high quality. It is served on a terrace which has beautiful views over the sea by friendly and efficient staff.

There are extensive terrace gardens with secluded seating areas. The outdoor pool and sun terrace is located below the gardens and is well sheltered with shaded sitting area and a bar serving serving snacks and drinks.

The hotel's location gives easy access to Taormina with its historic buildings, quality shops and bars and restaurants.

A car is not needed if you are staying in Taormina as all of the upper area is in easy walking distance and driving is not easy because of the one way systems and narrow streets. If you do hire a car however there is gated parking at the hotel for which no charge was made.

A stay at the San Domenico Palace is a relaxing experience to be enjoyed and relished and I would recommend it highly.

Room Tip: Go for the sea view and if possible a terrace as the views are breathtaking.

This was a wonderful hotel and the grounds are very beautiful. I had a very relaxing and enjoyable stay here. If I return to Taormina I would stay here again. It is also in a perfect location for Taormina, situated quite centrally, yet very peaceful. Having breakfast was also a good experience, seated on a terrace covered in pretty flowers and looking out over the sea. I thought the staff were friendly and helpful. I did not use the restaurant but did have snacks at the bar area including a very nice cheese platter.

We have just come back from one week in room 356, which was just wonderful - it has a little balcony and the most perfect view over the bay and the Teatro Greco. It's a very good sized room, great bathroom which looked new, and I also loved the storage space in the room.

The location of the hotel is great, it's only a few steps up through pretty alleyways to the lively Corso Umberto.

The courtyard of the hotel is beautiful, and we had some aperitifs here in the evening when a piano player plays (he is really very good!) and the palm trees and flowers are beautifully illuminated - all very romantic!

We relied on the concierge to make recommendations for local restaurants and were very happy with their suggestions every time. They were also able to recommend trips around Sicily and we found them to be very knowledgeable in all cases.

In general the staff was extremely helpful and friendly, from the reception to the waiters and the chambermaids and the pool staff, we felt very welcome and will certainly be back.

My only suggestion (and I mean this only to be helpful) is that it would be nice to have some more fresh fruit at the (otherwise amazing) breakfast buffet, perhaps fresh peaches or watermelon. Also I think the juices might be from concentrate (but not the orange juice, which is clearly freshly made).

But these are only tiny little suggestions, and we loved our stay very much - we are already looking forward to our next visit!

bed and breakfast at the hotel is fine.good location and pleasant rooms.BUT unless you are happy to pay 65 euros a pop for overcooked fish or tough steak or cold greasy veal cutlets served at a snails pace by erratic waiters with the attention span of a three year old child we would suggest that you give the restaurant a miss. The only thing 5 star is the price of the meal.

This is a great hotel with a wonderful atrium off the lobby, serving drinks during cocktail hour. The rooms are all different with some being small and no balcony as was mine. I had a garden view which was lovely. I wanted to be on the first floor to avoid walking up steps. The rooms on the second floor had balconies with views of the sea. All rooms are different which adds to the charm of the hotel. No cookie-cutter rooms here like the chain hotels. The buffet breakfast was quite lavish and extensive. There was outdoor seating also. The garden at the back of the hotel was beautiful and tranquil with views of the sea. There were discrete seating areas where you could sit and read or just relax with a feeling of being in a private garden. The location of the hotel is very conveniently located near the main pedestrian shopping areas.

We have been visiting The San Domenico Palace for many years now and are always made to feel most welcome by all the front office staff, we are fortunate to stay in Room 362 every year, a superior deluxe room with balcony, it is worth the extra money to stay in this part of the building rather than the monastery side.
The only criticism I have is breakfast service, it can at best be organised chaos or a totally disorganized shambles when it comes to service. It really depends who is the Maitre d on duty, the tall man seems to be able to control with waiters more effectively. It gets rather tiring every morning to be told we have run out of this or that because we are very busy - they are busy every morning and should have enough mis en place.
Anyway breakfast aside this is a wonderful hotel, with good service everywhere else, be it by the pool, in the garden or housekeeping.
Note to Andresonville - that man hole cover in the road has been clack clacking for the last 5 years, I would almost miss it if the council fixed it.
Note to Hotel - get the wi fi sorted out, I only noticed after I left that I had been charged 9 euros for wi fi, and the day I was charged for this for 24 hours - I got 15 minutes usage.

Room Tip: Superior deluxe with balcony is a good sized room. The Classic Doubles in the monastery are a bit d...
