San Domenico Palace Hotel
Ranked #12 of 87 Hotels in Taormina
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 29 July 2014

We have recently stayed at the San Domenico and whilst it is a beautiful hotel and setting it is definitely not worthy of its 5 star status. The hotel is lovely, the staff apart from one of the gentleman on reception are very efficient and courteous but the rest of the hotel leaves a lot to be desired. I have seen many complaints on here about the cost of wi-fi and the only way the hotel seems to have addressed this is to leave the charge as is and remove the free wi-fi in the hotel reception! The area that is the most lacking in service and standards is the food and beverage and particularly breakfast. The "amazing" buffet seemed to be absent and what was available was cold. Guests had to wait ages for food to be replaced and despite the fact that several people were waiting for the hot plates to be filled, only one bowl of each came out which disappeared again after 5 servings leaving a lot more guests waiting! Breakfast is advertised as being served from 7am to 10.30 am but when we arrived at breakfast at 7am one morning to go on an early trip, the food was cold, the candles hadn't been lit under the food, the tables weren't laid etc. etc., and we ended up having to order our food separately. There was a distinct shortage of staff and those who are there are not very efficient. Tea with cold milk was presented as tea bags, hot water, and lemons with hairs in it! Whatever you ordered was not completed, ie. coffee would arrive but no hot milk, teabags but no hot water! They try very hard but are not able to complete an entire order which is not my usual experience of a 5 star hotel. We avoided the hotel bar completely - why pay 3 times the amount of euros for a bottle of coke when you can pay 2 Euros a 2 minute walk away? Whilst this is a lovely hotel I wouldn't stay here again. Given how much it cost just for bed and breakfast there is no way that we could justify this cost against the standards they offer.

Room Tip: Sea view is a must

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience at the San Domenico. We are very sorry that our Hotel did not matched your taste, especially our buffet breakfast.

We are doing our investigation, because normally what occured during your stay, it’s not our standards, the buffet brealfast has normally a really good level of food and service.

Therefore we would like to thank you for helping us to improve and highlighte our standar.
Sincerely

We were very pleased with our choice of hotel. Its location is convenient for the sights of Taormina but it is also a haven of peace from the bustle of the town. We had booked a deluxe family room with sea view and large terrace from which we could also see Etna.
Service was professional, efficient but also friendly. The hotel has an excellent and very clean outdoor pool with shaded seating which we made good use of and one of the pool attendants, who told us that he was also a swimming coach, made our daughter's day by taking an interest in her swimming. The pool service was relaxed but someone was always on hand if we needed anything which is how we like it.
There were various warnings about not leaving our balcony doors open in the evenings because of mosquitos. We followed this advice and none of us was bitten.
Breakfast was good and plentiful with lots of choice of cold meats and cheeses, pastries and cooked breakfast dishes. Surprised that some of the pastries had a pre-frozen note on them!

Room Tip: Go for a sea view

An elegant hotel in a great location. To me the location is better than the Timeo (where you have to beat your way through the throngs of people going to or departing a concert at the Teatro Greco). It is easy to enjoy Taormina from San Domenico Palace. You can access the town out the front gate and retreat from the busy town to the hotel's wonderful gardens and courtyard. The courtyard is a beautiful location for pre-dinner drinks, with an exceptional bartender, service and music. Lunch by the pool is very nice. Our rooms were very comfortable and large. I agree with one reviewer's comment that the WIFI could be improved. The hotel should just take the issue off the table by making good quality WIFI free throughout the hotel, as opposed to charging for use in rooms with free access in the common areas. Charging an additional $9.00 a day to access WIFI in one's room is just an annoyance to guests that does not produce enough revenue to be worth the negative review. Overall, I would give the hotel a 9/10, but note that the hotel will need to start investing a bit more in upkeep.

You are transported in time to a gentle, quiet, elegant time. We loved the character of this old monestery turned hotel. It is higher priced than most sicilian hotels, but it's Taormina and touristy, so it's expected. Having said that, it's beautiful and grand and elegant. We loved the panoramic view from our quaint room, enjoyed breakfast on the hotel patio as well as drinks with friends in the courtyard. The air conditioning could use some tweaking, but it's Sicily where that is really not a priority. We enjoyed our stay and look forward to returning.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a patio room if possible, the view is spectacular.

Stayed at this hotel last week and found it to be very nice and comfortable with excellent staff except for reception staff who didn't seem to be able to understand what you were enquiring about. Breakfast was excellent but generally food and drinks are overpriced.

A real luxury hotel, very quiet, very expensive.. The only problem was the wifi.. I payed 5000 Eur / room for 9 nights and I had to pay extra 9 Eur / day x 2 for the internet which was a very bad one with a very poor connection.. The food was also very good but very expensive. A lounch for two was about 180 eur..

This was our second visit to the San Domenico Palace Hotel, this time with the children. It's relaxed, understated, slightly faded style exudes peace and tranquility. Everything works (except the internet during part of our stay!) in a way that makes for a wonderful holiday. Taormina is a bustling place full of interest which makes the San Domenico the perfect place to retreat to. Breakfast on the terrace overlooking the Ionian Sea is a great way to start the day. The pool area is very pleasant. We will be back.
