“Excellent Location”
Reviewed 16 June 2009

Hotel is in a great spot for the cable car, shops, buses and the view from our balcony was fabulous. Staff were all friendly and there was an excellent choice for breakfast. We could hear the shower next door so I agree with previous comments made on that but the hotel overall wasn't noisy. We had a fabulous week. Hotel offers an evening dinner for 15 euros which is great value as eating out in the town can be expensive.

I stayed at the hotel in a single room and was in the basement! Plus points pool nice, location good, shower ef.ficient. Now for the bad bits - I was in room 524 which was in the basement. No view except of a solid wall. Furniture and carpet stained and have no idea what had caused the staining and don't want to even think about it! I could have cried when I saw the room. Don't know what the other rooms were like but imagine they were dated as that was the overall impression of the hotel. Tormina was lovely and I would go back but not to this hotel. It was never 4* standard so be prepared

I don't know what the other people are talking about. I had the most wonderful time at the Ariston. The staff was always pleasant and helpful, the food was pretty good, and I had no problem with noise.

Also, it's such a lovely walk to the shops and Teatro Greco.

I would recommend this place to anyone! I saw people of all ages enjoying themselves there.

I have read some of the other reviews and if anybody found this hotel acceptable then their comfort level is zero. The views are stunning-thats it !
We booked a sea view ang got it-but you had to sit on the back of a chair to see it!We asked for a balcony room, offered to pay and were treated like we had invaded Sicily again. The main receptionist was rude beyond belief and the manager-when available is the original Basil Fawlty. He actually turned his back on you if he even thought there might be a problem.
The quality and quantity of the buffet was acceptable if you timed it right but the staff were officious and curt. They were very slow to replace dishes once they had been emptied so you could wait for a particular item some time.We were luckily only there for a week but we had the same single type of potato dish 5 times and once we had the most liquid mash spud I have seen since I left school !!Veg was non existant and the salad bar never changed-the boiled spuds from the night before appearing as a salad item.
The bar service was non-existant-if you wanted a drink of any sort before 8.p.m. you had to go to reception for them to summon a waiter-and their 5 minutes was over 25 minutes once-but we were determined to get a drink !!!
You have to use the card issued on arrival to charge things to your room but we bought 1 item with cash-which was never recorded we discovered on checkout-make your own conclusion as to the staff integrity!!!They collect your cases from the drop off point on arrival and if given 20 minutes notice will deliver them back down on departure-in theory!! On arrival I collected our cases after 40 minutes and on departure the Thomson rep had to go and ask them twice where the van was-and we had been assured 45 minutes before they "were on the way"
Whatever else you do in your life-AVOID THE ARISTON-unless you wish to pay 4* prices for 1* budget service
Our rep-Louise did her best but the hotel staff are a force to be reckoned with.

The hotel is high on a hill and you need to climb some steps but it is worth the climb...
The view from my room was fantastic! The grounds were beautiful! It was close to
shops, restaurants, ATM, and Taxi and bus...

Mauritzio and all the staff were helpful and pleasant. The lounge offered entertainment
in the evening and the 'maestro' was very talented. Drinks were good, dancing was wonderful and the place was inviting. Almost all of the rooms have balconies and look out onto the ocean. I would love to come back!

We arrived with a group of 52 from Boston. While 24 of our 26 rooms had a balcony, we did not. When we politely asked if we might be moved, Maurizio at the front desk could not have been more rude and arrogant. Three days later we were moved. The dining room staff wasn't much better. While breakfast was served 'til 10:15, they chased us out
of our assigned area of the dining room at at 9:20. There were 6 members of our group still eating but they wanted to set up for lunch. They were pleasant only on our last night...expecting a tip. The housekeeping staff was something else. After breakfast, before heading out for an hour and a half bus ride, I wished to use the bathroom. Both common area restrooms were being cleaned. As directed by the front desk, I had to walk across a floor being washed only to be called a "butana" which I later learned to be quite an offensive term. The climb to the hotel is very dangerous and dark. We had some rain and it was quite slippery. A woman in another group fell and broke her collarbone as well as requiring 14 stitches on her forehead-3 days in the hospital! There are too many nice places to stay. Don't choose this place!

The hotel has a lot to offer but you must be fit to stay there as it is very hilly and there are many steps. I felt Taormina was a resort for a mountaineer at times. The hotel is very good but beware paying £224 extra for a sea view does not necessarily mean you will get a balcony. This is another £244, However we were lucky and got both although the sea view was obscured by trees and we had to stay in the annex which was down a very steep approach to the hotel. It is euphemistically called the Palazza Santa Caterina, but the accommodation is rather like a budget motel. Unfortunately the lift up from the bus station was broken for the first 5 days so you had to climb 72 steps up to the hotel. However they did take your luggage up in a little van.

The Sicilians are not like the Italians and they will tell you they are not Italians but are fiercely proud of being Sicilian. They are more reserved and take longer to warm to you. So the first week we thought them a bit aloof, but the second week we could have a laugh and joke with them and they were indeed lovely and wanted to help you enjoy their country.

The food is plentiful and all self service with a carvery every evening and a selections of soups, pasta, meat and fish. The desserts were mostly cakes or fruit and there was ice-cream in 4 different flavours. The was a wide choice in the salad bar and in cold vegetables but the hot vegetables were the same mishmash every night which became boring after the first week. The dining room staff were great and your empty plates were whisked away pronto. Breakfast was the usual fare with hot scrambled egg, frankfurters, streaky bacon always available. However the quality varied and some nights everything was very salty. There was really nothing to complain about but it did get very samey.

The entertainment was varied in the piano bar with a hilarious night each week when a local folklore group got everyone singing and another night when a quartet played more classical music transcribed for a mandolin rather than a violin. They were excellent. Every day at 4.0pm there was free coffee , tea and biscuits on the terrace.

The hotels position in the town is very convenient and Taormina is a quaint place with lots to see and loads of shops. It is a stop on the cruise circuit so some days it was very busy. The Greek Theatre with it fantastic position is a must see.

The trips with Thomsons were good. Recommended are the visit to Agricento and Piazza Armeria for the Greek temples and the Roman mosaics, but it was a 600 kilometre journey and quite gruelling. The best tour was the Godfather tour which took you to 2 of the mountain villages where they filmed the Sicilian scenes. We had a lovely day there and our Guide was very knowledgeable. I must now watch the 3 films. We went to Siracuse, where the guide was a disaster and it poured down, so I was less happy on that tour. We went up Etna but only paid for the tour to the resting station at 2000 metres. You paid extra for the cable car and a jeep to take you nearer to the crater, however this was a good move ad the mountain was covered in mist and the jeeps could not run because of the weather conditions. Then it poured down and did not stop . So we did not waste our money, if it had been clear we would have paid the extra and gone up.

Sicily however is a poor country and the countryside is littered with abandoned farms and houses. Whist around Etna it is mountainous most of the central part is very flat and uninteresting. You are aware of the undercurrent caused by the Mafia presence and I probably would not go back again but I am so glad I have been.

  • Disliked — Very dangerous pool 8 foot 6 in the shallow end and no hand rail in case of difficulties
