Hotel Villa Diodoro
Ranked #29 of 87 Hotels in Taormina
Reviewed 17 September 2013

We arrived on the 1st. September 2013 only to find that throughout the week of our stay the hotel was hosting a large conference and the delegates would be occupying large areas of the hotel and its facilities during daylight hours. Also a number of wedding receptions took place during the week, two on one day, with guests occupying large areas of the hotel and restricting where resident guests could go. At no time did the management notify us as to what was going on, or create areas for residents only. The feeling, shared by other guests, was that they did not really care about our comforts. Hotel staff were often rushed off their feet looking after delegates and wedding guests to the detriment of resident guests. On our last night, due to a wedding party taking place in the main dining room the management did not have the courtesy to inform us where we were to dine that evening. Not wanting to appear too negative, it is only fair to say that the hotel does have some wonderful features. Our room was very comfortable and the view from the balcony breathtaking. The pool area is lovely, if not a little difficult to get to. Food quality was just acceptable but not wonderful, especially at breakfast time. Most staff were friendly and provided good service when they were not too busy looking after the needs of non-residents. A weeks stay at the Villa Diodora is not cheap, and therefore it is my view that management need to reflect seriously on how they can make it feel better value for money for resident guests. Management communication needs to improve significantly. At the moment it does not feel like a 4Star hotel.

Room Tip: Most rooms have magnificent views but no privacy.

After a sticky start, not having the room we were expecting, the staff went out of their way to get us one we were happy with. They showed us four rooms , but the one we chose , balcony with view was empty so I don't know why they didn't allocate this one in the first place.
The hotel was very clean and staff polite.
Great location for the town.

Room Tip: have balcony with sea and etna view, but because of the tall trees opt for top floor.

My husband and I have just returned from a four night stay on a half board basis. Our room was a good size and had a large balcony with a lovely sea view. The bathroom was adequate.
The pool area was the best feature of the hotel with its stunning views of the sea and Etna.
The décor of the hotel was in need of some attention, however the hotel was clean and the staff were polite and helpful.
We found the food somewhat lacking especially the evening meals which were adequate at best and we ended up eating out on the last night.
Overall, we enjoyed our stay but we just feel the hotel needs a little bit of TLC.

Visited this hotel with my daughter for her birthday. We booked a flight only with a transfer to the bus station in Taormina. When asked about the location of the hotel the rep on the coach said it's in walking distance but due to the heat (in he 30's) it would be better to get a taxi. So glad we did as it was way too far for me pulling a case. Taxi is 10 euros & stopped at the entrance gate to the hotel therefore we had to take our luggage down a steep slope which would not be any good for an elderly person to manage.

PROS: The reception staff were really good especially Rosario. Very friendly & helpful. We were given a room on the 4th floor with a sea and garden view. The room had plenty of storage & a lovely (possibly new) bathroom. The towels & sheets were changed daily and the hotel was very clean. The pool area was lovely with views to Mount Etna & there was a sun umbrella for every 2 sun loungers and 1 free towel per person. Free safe in wardrobe and free WiFi. A courtesy bus costs 4 euros return to the beach with free imbrellas & sunbeds which makes a lovely day out.

CONS:The balconies to the rooms are one continuous balcony with a bit of wrought iron between so there isn't any privacy. The aircon in the rooms is so loud that we had to turn it off at night just when it was needed. The dining room is very austere with miserable staff & there isn't anywhere to sit outside for your breakfast. I think the hotel is missing a trick here as it would be lovely outside with the views & not feel quite so stuffy. The breakfast is poor. A small amount of fresh fruit to peel yourself but the breakfast fruit was out of a tin.It consisted of prunes, pear & pineapple. I don't think it would take much to prepare fresh fruit. The usual thin bacon & scrambled eggs were on offer with hard boiled cold eggs some days. There was the usual bread & jams with a few cakes but no toaster & cheese & tomatoes. The tea & coffee was served at the table. My daughter said the tea was ok but the coffee was not good & luke warm. My daughter is a coeliac so they did provide the odd biscuits & a roll but no bread(although without a toaster I suppose it didn't matter. All in all about 3 star.....
Lunchtime at the pool was very limited. My daughter had caprese salad 4 times due to gluten content in the bread but luckily Pietro saved the day & acquired guten free rolls . He was really pleasant & made a fabulous capuccino every afternoon with a little cake selection.(breakfast room take note).
We had a 10 minute heavy shower one day which soaked our towels. When we went for a replacement the "lifeguard" or the towel man said no more towels. As people were still arriving at the pool he made no effort to rectify this. We had to go to our room for our towels. NOT GOOD. (strange how some of the italians could have extra towels to dry their hair!!)
This brings me to another point. The pool has 58 steps up & 58 down not good for anybody with knee problems or the elderley. There is no info in the rooms about the area & gardens next door.

The hotel is in a great spot just a short walk to the beginning of town either on the pavement or through the pleasant gardens.
I think if the hotel just read some of the negative comments & rectified them this hotel would be ideal.

I've just returned from a wonderful holiday in Taormina at Hotel Diodoro. I chose this hotel due to the location and facilities and I could say that I couldn't make a better choice.
It was by far one of my best experience . I met friendly, attentive and available staff both at reception and restaurant (Angela, Pedro ), nice room ,very good food for breakfast and dinner , large pool with an amaizing view of the bay and Mt Etna, easy access to the sister hotel's beach, short distance to the old town, , public gardens and Greek Theatre .All these ingredients and the beauty of Taormina make me to wish to come back at Villa Diodoro in the very near future.

Great hotel, clean comfortable and friendly staff. It has a real charm being an older building with beautiful period furniture. The room was spacious, quiet and very comfortable beds. The most impressive feature of the hotel was the pool terrace.. what an amazing view of the ocean and Mt Etna..

Would definately stay again and would book a room with a balcony view of the ocean

Room Tip: definately book a balcony room

We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights. We arrived by car from Catania airport, and found it extremely difficult to find this place. I called for directions several times in route, and got close enough to walk (up a steep narrow road with luggage). When we checked in we were told they didn't have our reservation, so we immediately called our travel agent, who was able to help out somewhat. We ended up with 2 rooms on separate floors. The next morning we were offered to swap a room across the hall for the one downstairs, which made everything perfect. The views couldn't be better. The pool was lovely, with drinks and food available. The location was fabulous, with gardens right next door that link to the main street for a more peaceful walk into town. The staff was friendly. Breakfast was good. Rooms were small, but clean, and had gorgeous (but not private) terraces. We were on 4th floor (412 and 418).
