“Lovely Location and Fantastic Views”
Reviewed 15 October 2009

My wife and I stayed in the hotel for a week, half board at the end of Sep. We had stayed in this hotel last year, June 2008 for 2 weeks and had a lovely time. We booked a balcony and Etna View. We arranged with the Hotel to have an Airport pick up for €85.

When we arrived, I mentioned that we were there before and the chap on the receptionist changed our room to one along the same row we had before.

Room was very nice, just as we remembered, with new large TV and remodelled bathroom. We had Sky TV, Sky News and Sky Sports. However after a thunderstorm a few days later Sky News and Fox News disappeared. When we asked about the news programmes we were told the repair man would check it out but it took several days to finally find out that they had cancelled the news subscription.

A lady receptionist was very unhelpful about the issue and made you feel that you were a nuisance and an annoyance.

Considering that it rained every day, we got a years rain in the week we were there, and we could not go out on some occassions for several hours, TV was more important
than normal. However after 3 or 4 attemps to solve the problem, a different maintenance man showed us how to change the languge on the Sky Box and we could watch TV in English.

The breakfast and dinners were very good and the staff at breakfast and dinner were always helpful and pleasant.

The location is perfect for the centre of town and the views are stunning. We would have no problem staying in this hotel provided we get a room similar to the one we got.

Some other guests said there rooms were dark, small and the bathroom was dirty. Can't believe it is the same hotel.

Hotel might consider improving their bar area, currenly only a couple of tables put together. Has potential to offer a great bar with a lovely out door area.

Stayed for one week in the Diodoro from 27th Sept to 4th Oct. 2009. Had booked and paid for a Superior Room but only got a standard Room on check in. (I know it was a standard Room in spite of the Receptionist insisting it was a Superior Room as I had stayed in a Standard room at the Hotel previously) .This was small and shoddy looking. Had then to pay €210 for an upgrade to a Junior Suite.
Front Office staff most unhelpful and dismissive. Breakfast was unappetising and a very poor choice. Not fully cooked bacon and scrambled egg. Cold boiled eggs and room temperature juice. Dinner not much better.
However Bar staff and restaurant manager very nice.
To sum up this Hotel needs a total revamp as the general decor is dated. A change of attitude in the staff would also not go amisss. Stained carpet on our (3rd Floor) landing - looked as it had been flooded at some stage recently.

Stayed here in September for 9 nights and could not recommend it all.
This hotel is not 4 star. The hotel is dated and in serious need of a revamp. When we arrived we were given a room which had damp carpets in the hallway and mould going up the wall. The room was of a very bad standard.
We had to complain it was so bad. We were on our honeymoon and this was not acknowledged at all.
The reception staff were rude and not at all helpful. We were eventually moved after threatening to check out. The new room was only average as well but had a big balcony with a nice view.
The room was tiny and the bathroom flooded every time you used the shower.
Re the food the breakfast was average. There was no variation and after 9 days of it we were sick of the food. We did not eat any other food in the hotel.
All in all I would say if you have booked here cancel. I have really nothing good to say about the experience. I would recommend looking for a hotel elsewhere.

We stayed in this hotel for 4 days in the very begining of September. Perhaps, many years ago,it was absolutely gorgeous hotel, but today, this hotel needs some serious renovations,as other travelers mentioned earlier.
However,we enjoyed the hotel.
Positives:
1.Hotel situated in the beautiful location-next door to botanical garden which was wonderful and 10-15 minutes walk to main streets and shops.
2.Room was big with huge balcony.
3.Hotel has parking available and that is very important in Taormina.
4. We booked this hotel via Expedia for rate $214 a day including all taxes and breakfast.
5.Pool is beautiful with amazing views of Etna. There is also restaurant available at the pool where we were drinking cold white wine and munchking on fruits.
6.Hotel has beautiful garden, just as nice as botanical garden with tall, big palms.
Negatives:
1.Hotel is old and it shows. When we walked in,immediately,we felt this dinstinctive smell of old hotel(smells like laundromat I don't know why but always smells like this in old type of hotels).
2.Breakfast was poor, simply not good, even coffee was bad(long table of food but nothing good to eat).
3.The bathtub was really bad. They had plastic curtain to cover bathtub instead of shower door and it was really thin. From the shower pressure, the curtain would get wet and attach to the body of person who takes shower.I kept fighting off the curtan with one hand and used the other hand to shampoo. It was very annoying!
4.The TV in the room from seventies, just like the room itself actually,so don't expect plasma.
We did not eat there,so can't comment on restaurants. When I read reviews,I realized that majority of unhappy customets so to speak were travelers from England. Most of them took full board,so they were pushed to eat there and as I understant, the food there is not the best. But if you don't take full board,I think you will find this hotel to be quite decent. We never take full board when we go away to Europe. We only take all-inclusive type of vacation when we go somewere like Dominican republic or Jamaica.
The other point to remember is that we booked this hotel for the rate of $214 a day.At that price, its worth the moneyt, but I would never pay $300/a day for this hotel.

The hotel enjoys a great location in the beautiful town of Taormina. The reception staff are pleasant, but after that things go down hill. The restaurant desparately needs a re-vamp. There is no atmosphere at all in this very old fashioned dining room, and the food is poor. The pool bar shuts up shop at 4 pm, come rain or shine! There are too many good restaurants in the town, about 10 mins walk away, so do not book half board, and you may be ok. Rooms at the side are dark and dingy and have no balcony, so avoid garden view rooms.

On arrival you are greeted by friendly staff who are very helpful to show you to your room. However you should note that not all rooms have a view, especially if the room happens to be on the side of the hotel!

The interior of the room is kept very clean however it is evident that it is time for the Hotle to undergo refurbishment. A small TV (not flat screen) is available in the room even though the choice of TV channels was very restrictive and some of the channels were not clear due to interference. A definite minus of the hotel is that rooms didnt have any internet or wifi for free and there was no location within the hotel where free access was available.

The location is not very far from the old city centre and is quite convenient.

As regards breakfast, more choice and selection was expected from a 4 star hotel. Egg and bacon was available, but the former was too soggy and the latter was undercooked. Lunch was served at the hotel but more was expected from the well known Sicilian cuisine.

Being on a business trip unfortunately I did not have the time to use the pool which seems to be one of the pluses of this hotel. The conference room, on the other hand, was very well organised and it was wonderful to have a coffee break in the small inner garden of the hotel.

Overall this is a good hotel but in my opinion it is overpriced. There are better and cheaper alternatives.

Villa Diodoro is beautifully situated with an amazing view over the bay and Etna. Its not right in the center of Taormina but its an easy walk 10-15 minutes to the main shopping street.
We originally got a room in the middle of the building between the two wings. The view however wasnt that nice and it was close to other balconies. We then changed to a room that had a very simple bathroom with a tiny shower and no bathtub (room 116) but it was compensated with an amazing large balcony with an excellent view of the bay and pool area.
The pool area had plenty of room for everyone and was beautifully situated with a wonderful view. It was well maintained and clean. There was a smaller lunch restaurant/cafe there as well.
The hotel has a small garden, a restaurant, a bar, a small shop with souvenirs and a lounge area.
We had half board and so we had all our breakfast meals and dinners at the restaurant.
Breakfast was a buffet with all you could ask for bread, pastries, juice, yoghurt, scrambled eggs, bacon, fruits and much more. Coffe or tea was brought to your table.
Dinner was from a menu and you had 32 Euros to spend every dinner included in the half board. The starters specially the pasta dishes were the best. The main courses were okay but the dessert buffet wasnt that fun. It mainly contained different types of cakes that didnt taste that much. Service overall was a bit reserved.
Rooms didnt have any internet or wifi for free. Not even the lounge area that actually had a computer had free access to the internet. This overall is one minus.
A good thing to know is that breakfast doesnt start until 7.30 am and many of the daytours start earlier than that. It is however possible to ask for an early breakfast at the reception. It will then be served in the restaurant as a personal smaller package of items from the buffet that opens later. They put out the room number on the table that is yours so that you know what table is for you. This system worked a little so so ..once perfectly and once not at all.
The best things with this hotel are the pool area and the view from the hotel.
