We selected this marvelous boutique hotel because of its top rating on TripAdvisor and we found that it even exceeded our high expectations.

The rooms are clean and modern and the views of Mt. Etna and down on Taormina were terrific. The buffet breakfast was great and dinner, which is for guests only, was like having a Sicilian mother cooking for you. Best part was the friendly staff which included the manager who wasn't above cleaning tables if that needed to be done.

The woman who owns the hotel happened to stop by while we were checking out and she insisted on giving us homemade eggplant sandwiches to take with us.

superb hotel; personal service, caring people, beautiful views, rooms excellent, views outstanding- great experience- owners are delightful. They have another hotel: Hotel villa Carlotta, in center Taormina- a more urban experience, but it seems lovely as well.

Room Tip: all good

Villa Ducale is an excellent hotel from which to enjoy the best of Taormina, however, we had one saga that significantly affected the enjoyment of our holiday (see below).

The staff are all very welcoming and friendly, and always willing to give you any information you need to enjoy the best of the area. The restaurant recommendations are excellent, and it is this kind of information that will enable you to enjoy Taormina the best way possible.

Our Junior Suite was a huge room, tastefully decorated to a high standard, and very clean (although not spotless). Endless towels are available, and WiFi is free throughout. The breakfast is plentiful, as is the afternoon tea and evening appetisers all served on the terrace with stunning view.

The 20 minute walk into town is pleasant enough that we did not use the complimentary bus downhill – although the heat will only become stronger over the summer. The last bus into town is around 7pm, the last return 11.15pm, both of which we found a little earlier than is ideal – more services would be welcomed.

I echo many of the positive comments made before, but it is only fair to potential visitors to offer some truthful balance:

- The hotel is in a semi-residential neighbourhood, and the cacophony of barking dogs can bite into your enjoyment of the twilight hours, as can the occasional morning rubbish burning from local homes. As I’m sure Paolo will reply, this is of course beyond the hotel’s control, but it is nonetheless a fact worth mentioning.

- Our “double” bed was two singles pushed together under a single sheet. The beds were not even fixed together and could roll across the floor, so when lying in the middle you could find yourself sinking into a widening gap towards the ground! I imagine this could be a particular disappointment to honeymooners.

Unfortunately, there was one significant drawback to our stay. When booking, I noticed the Junior Suite was only available for the first 7 nights of the 9 we wanted, so I emailed asking if we could take those 7 nights, then upgrade to the De-Luxe suite. Appearing positive, Paolo replied:
“we can offer a Junior suite for the whole stay … maybe with just one room change.”
Followed by, after paying the deposit
“Confirmation for one Junior Suite … 9 nights… (I have moved things around to get the Junior Suite throughout, however it is possible that you will need to change the room on the last night.)”
And “We are pleased to definitely confirm your reservation as shown above.”

However, on arrival, we were told there was no room for us on the final night – our stay cut to 8 nights without warning.

This situation was dealt with well from that point onwards (booking us into Villa Angela, transferring our luggage there, and a bottle of wine as a gift), but this saga entailed us checking out of 2 hotels in 2 days, which was a significant waste of time, and a stressful addition to our holiday that could have been avoided if we been accurately informed when our plans were still flexible.

Our stay in Villa Angela (on the same street) highlighted other drawbacks to Villa Ducale:
- There are few places to enjoy the sun at Villa Ducale (compared with a large, sunny pool area at Angela, and large private terraces with sun loungers – our balcony at Villa Ducale was only just deep enough for a table and chairs)
- All rooms at Villa Angela face the same Mount Etna view that Villa Ducale’s terrace is famed for, whereas the rooms on the wrong side of the road at Villa Ducale do not enjoy this stunning view.

I would happily recommend Villa Ducale to a friend for the excellent service, but for a second visit I would exchange this service for a less expensive hotel with better views and a swimming pool.

Room Tip: Mount Etna views are far better than Italy views

Dear Bard & Lucy,
Thank you for choosing Taormina as your holiday destination and Villa Ducale as your house.
I am really sorry to hear that we haven’t managed to meet your expectations.
I appreciate your comments it is a shame that you haven’t shared them with us whilst you were here to enable us to try to amend any inconvenience you might have experienced, as the philosophy of my house is to offer an experience by personalizing as much as we can our guests stay, not just to sell a room.
Thank you again for the nice words used for my staff, for the house and for the nice pictures that you have attached.
The Hotel complimentary Shuttle runs at fixed times from 10.45 am to 11.15 pm last shuttle into town at 11.00 pm last one up at 11.15, from 6 pm there is one every hour and we are flexible, guests just need to ask and we will do our best to help.
The Local busses run every hour from 7.00 am to 11.45 pm starting from 0.50 to 1.70 Euro per adult per way.
Looking forward to see you again in the future.

We were a group of 6 very experienced travelers, 3 couples, who visited Villa Ducale in May.

Paolo and his staff provide service at the VERY HIGHEST level.

Despite beng first-time guests, we were greeted like old friends. Every request received a "no problem" response. The views are spectacular. The common areas, guest rooms, and gardens are outstanding. Excellent food and beverage availalbe all day. Evening meal, fabulous. Did I mention the views?

Enough verbiage....suffice to say that if you stay anywhere else in Taormina you will have missed out on one the best experiences available to travelers anywhere.

What a fabulous small family run hotel with the most magnificent staff. We stayed for one week with our 9 year old son. The setting of the hotel is high up overlooking fantastic views and to sit on the terrace eating breakfast was great.
The hotel provides all the small extras that you need. ie complimentary afternoon tea is served everyday at 4.00pm. Homemade pastries which were excellent.
The Hotel runs a shuttle service to the town and the beach and are always there to help. The staff were so friendly also to my son who thought they were his best friends.
I would recommend this boutique hotel as one of the best we have ever stayed in.

Thank you to Paolo. Luca. Antonio and the man who drove us everywhere on the hotel shuttle bus!

We had the distinct pleasure of staying at the Hotel Villa Ducale with our collegiate daughter in late May of 2009. It was wonderful from start to finish. From the initial email correspondence, to our taxi ride from the airport, to finally meeting Alessia and Luca, then getting to know Paolo, Antonio, Rosario and Dieten, (please forgive our questionable spelling!) and of course, the young tour guide Claudio, was simply one good thing after another.

Our suite was large, quiet and well appointed, with a beautiful view of the coastline from our small balcony. And the bathroom was, by any standard, spacious! The breakfasts included a delicious variety of roasted vegetables that were unexpected and fully appreciated, as were the generous and tasty selections of hors d'œuvres in the afternoons. All enjoyed on that beautiful expansive terrace, looking out over Taormina and Naxos, under the looming, tangible presence of Etna.

Thank you all again, albeit belatedly : | for a truly wonderful stay!

Everytime during your stay in this luxury hotel you will feel yourself like in family. Every member of the Hotel staff will do their best to care about your comfort and leasure. Excellent location above the bustling tourist routes gives you unique chance to have a cosy rest. Views from rooms are amazing and sightseeings from the main terrace immerses you in a fairy tale and appeasement. Sometimes you will feel like in cinema where protagonists are the majestic mount Etna and the stunning nature of Sicily. Cousine is also outstanding and as simple as delicious! It's not enough Michelin Stars to rate its taste and quality... If you want to feel what does it mean Paradise - you should attend Villa Ducale in Taormina, Sicily...

Room Tip: All rooms are great with perfect view.
