“Good hotel but avoid the Atrium Garden Suite”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 November 2011

Stayed at this hotel for 2 nights in early October. We were travelling with another couple and unfortunately the only two rooms left were the Atrium Garden Suite and a double seaview room on the first floor. We scored the Atrium Garden Suite on the ground floor which was a quite large comfortable room with a very large bathroom with windows that looked into the atrium garden. The reception was on the other side of the atrium and to access our room we had to go outside in the open air and walk about 15 metres across a little courtyard. All of which is fine apart from if it is raining which it was for part of our stay. The other issue with the Atrium Garden Suite was that it was very dark and we needed the lights on most of the time.

Our travelling companions on the other hand scored the double seaview room which was just as large, albeit with a smaller bathroom, but it had two small Juliet balconies, one at the front and one at the side, from which there were magnificient views of the coastline, the Greek theatre and Mt Etna. The difference in price for the rooms was euro30-00. I would have happily paid the extra if a room had been available.

Breakfast was taken on the hotel's huge balcony one floor down from reception and was largely a cold affair but very good. You ordered what you wanted from a menu and it was all delivered together on a tray. Typical choices were cereal, eggs, granita, juice, cold meats, cheese, fruit compote, fruit, bread, croissants and jam, tea and coffee.

The hotel has an area on the top (4th floor) where you can go to sun bake or admire the view. Drinks can be ordered from the little bar next to the reception and they will bring them to you. Alternatively, you can also order drinks to be had on the balcony where breakfast is taken. We ordered drinks both from the bar (prices very reasonable euro1-50 for a beer and euro3-00 for a Campari spritz ) and also brought our own bottles of wine which we purchased in Taormina.

Recommend a GPS if driving to the hotel as Taormina has many one way streets and the hotel parking is at the back of the hotel on one of these streets. Parking was euro15 a night and I recommend it as well as making parking reservations in advance as space is limited. The hotel has a couple of dedicated pull in car spaces where you can unload and then your car is placed in the hotel's garages, which are not that large, and are carved into the hill under the hotel. Staff will help you unload the bags and they have access to a lift to take the bags up to reception.

All of the staff were very pleasant and helpful. Check-in/out was very efficient and we were able to leave our bags in a safe area after checking out on the last day in order to see more of Taormina.

Hotel is in a great location to access the main street of Taormina. From reception you walk up about 15 stairs walk through the hotel's quite beautiful garden, up about another 15 stairs and then you are in a short alleyway that leads directly onto the main street, Corso Umberto 1.

Would stay again but only in a seaview room.

Room Tip: A sea view room on any of the floors definitely not the garden atrium suite.

Dear guest, thank you very much for your altogether very positive review on our hotel. It is a pleasure to read your detailed descriptions on the hotel’s features and on our staff and we are happy that you enjoyed your stay at Hotel Villa Schuler that much.

All the more we feel pity about the fact that you didn’t like so much the room you were staying in. We appreciate that you decided to share your opinion on the room, but we would like to adjust one important misleading detail. The room you were staying in is not at all a Suite as you might have thought because of its spaciousness and its nice bathroom, it is in fact one of our low budget rooms, a standard garden side room simply called “Atrium Double”, as described on our website and in our booking offers and confirmations with all its special amenities such as its large terrace, its green courtyard and the access via this leafy atrium.

And of course it is true that the shadier garden side of our hotel is less brighter than its sunny seafront side. Some of our repeaters love to return to this room also for this reason, but of course this is always a matter of individual preferences and taste.
Being blessed by mostly fine weather during the season March to November, we rarely need umbrellas here. Last October was an unusually wet month and in those remote events we have our hotel umbrellas available at the reception desk for all clients.

After reading your review, we welcomed your remarks as a valued suggestion and we added an umbrella to the Atrium room amenities, just in case …

Nice to read your description of our rich breakfast served a la carte, which we are really proud of. We just do not really understand your description of our breakfast as a “cold affair”. If you felt cold outside on our terrace, you would have had the possibility to enjoy your breakfast alternatively also in the breakfast pavillon, in our large breakfast hall, inside our Rooftop Lounge or even in your room. What makes our breakfast service so special is also the fact that there are so many alternative areas to have your breakfast served a la carte. Not sure about it, but if you meant our breakfast choice to be cold: our breakfast menu includes also large choice of warm dishes, such as freshly cooked, fried or scrambled eggs, pancakes (salty or sweet) and all types of omelets, all prepared fresh after orders are taken a la carte.

Thank you again for your honest review. We hope that we might have you again as our estimated guest and in order to be able to choose between our 10 room-types, we would like to advice you to pre-book on time.

The rooms in this hotel are simple and very clean, nice bathroom with a shower with jets.,little balcony with a grrreat view of both Etna and the sea. Take breakfast on the sunny terrace, order the fresh fruit platter with whatever else you want (eggs, salami, cheeses, coffees, etc), they make it all to order (not a buffet, which was a nice change).

The hotel is a few steps from the main road, and you get to walk through the most amazing garden. There are tables set up throughout the garden to have a coffee in. Amazing space, a gardener's delight!

There are a few free parking spots, which saves 15 euro a day, if they are available.

Few meters away from from the main street of Taormina, the villa Schuller offers very nice rooms, a great terrace with amazing views on the bay. Breakfast was very good and enjoyed on the terrace. The hotel can also offer a parking slot for your car. Rare in Taormina. Service was excellent. All those reason and the location make the Schuller villa a bit expensive, but again we are in Taormina...

We were very pleased with the hotel, although the walls are very thin and we could hear the neighbors. Breakfast is cooked to order and served on a lovely terrace. The staff were very helpful. My only regret is that based on a trip advisor recommendation we booked the sunrise junior suite. The room is fine, there's a small sitting area and a reasonable sized terrace with two lounge chairs. The problem is that you can't see the water unless you're standing because there's a high wall that blocks the view! If you want a private lounging area the suite may be great. If you want views from your room, don't book the sunrise junior suite.

Dear guest from Chicago, I am glad you liked your stay at our hotel and I'm sorry for that little regret about having booked the Sunrise Junior Suite. Our room description states that its sun terrace is overlooking the sea. Every terrace needs to have a railing that can be a metal or a concrete one. As clearly shown on the photos on our web page the concrete railing on the 3rd floor terraces of our Sunrise Junior Suites is elbow high being 96 cm/37,8 inches high, just the minimum requirement for safe hotel terraces.

So the “high wall” was in fact a concrete railing elbow high blocking the otherwise unobstructed frontal sea view only when lying in the sunbeds.

We really could not fault this hotel. Our room was comfortable and spacious with everything we needed. The view was superb. Breakfast was good with plenty of choice including eggs done every which way. But best of all were the people on the reception desk. Each one we dealt with was incredibly helpful and, what's more, they seemed happy about it. They gave great directions for getting to Catania, picking up fuel on the way; they looked after our car and our bags; they provided umbrellas to keep us dry. They smiled! Even the room cleaners were happy and helpful. Thanks Villa Schuler - it was a great end to our Sicilian holiday.

Dear guest from Camberra, we thank you for the nice words you said about our staff and their smiling attitude. We are a team of 12 plus we 2 managers . It’s a larger family with staff members loyal since an average of at least 12 years, some even up to 26 years.

Of course it‘s not always a Bed of Roses but we try hard in providing genuine personal attention to all our guests which are mostly individual travellers discovering our beautiful island.

We loved our stay, beautiful view from our superior double over the bay,at night with all the lights just as good.Breakfast outside on the terrace, very laid back and relaxed while gazing at the view.Panoramic roofterrace even better. The garden is beautiful and will be very pleasant in summer as it is shaded. conveniently located 50meters from the main street. All the staff were very helpful and professional and the carparking was excellent.
Maybe nice toiletries, fresh orange juice and home made cake,a little soundproofing,an airco servic and some fancier furniture in the room would make a tiny difference in what is already very good.

From the moment you arrive you will not be disappointed by anything at the Villa Schuler. Mr. Schuler even helped us unload our car when we arrived. This is much more than a 3 star hotel. It shares the views with all the famous 5 star hotels and is simply charming. I requested a seaview room (with a discount for Nov.) and was accommodated without problem. Parking was also available (a special offer - free) under the villa in their own garage. Best is the made to order breakfast on the outdoor terrace. Enjoy the beautiful villa gardens - many hidden places to sit and enjoy coffee or wine. Just a short walk to all sites. Extremely hospitable and gracious.

Room Tip: Request a seaview but the garden rooms also have nice views of the town.
