My time at the Villa Schuler was idyllic. Staff members were charming. My spacious, lovely room had a balcony with a matchless view. Breakfasts were delightful.

I particularly liked the large, nicely maintained garden behind the hotel. A perfect place for a coffee or a drink. The garden had direct access to the alley leading to the main street, so the location was ideal, but still felt secluded.

Very romantic!

In November 2008 I led a tour of 13 aesthetically-minded American ladies to Sicily. Everything about the trip was wonderful but Villa Schuler was the best of all!
Where to start?
-- Mr. Schuler and his entire staff treated us like family and made us feel at home and welcome every moment.
-- Our rooms were absolutely lovely, many with views of the sea and little private balconies.
--The hotel was centrally-located, just a few steps up to the main Corso, and had a lovely garden for walking, reading or just savoring.
-- The breakfasts were ample, delicious and presented almost as works of art.
Mr. Schuler was a tremendous help with suggestions for Sicily and Taormina from the moment I booked our rooms (including arrangements for a Farewell Dinner at a local restaurant).
-- Last but certainly not least, Mr. Schuler put us in touch with the bus company (mini van), which we used our entire Sicily Trip - "Sicily Life", with friendly and competent drivers (most spoke English) and specialty excursions to Mount Etna and villages where the "Godfathe"r was filmed.

We hated to leave and hope to return to Villa Schuler as soon as possible!

I have just completed 6 luxurious days of our hiking vacation while staying at the Villa Schuler Taormina Sicily Italy.

As has been repeatedly stated by other reviewers in Tripadvisor the rooms were elegantly appointed, the atmosphere was casual but tasteful, and the service was incomparable. In addition to the elegant surroundings, my colleagues and I were required to remain in contact with other research institutions in Europe and the US. Having the capability to use “in house” laptop computers anywhere in the Hotel area provided individualized convenient international contact. The availability of laptops also freed us from the necessity of weighty communication equipment.

Virtually all of the Tripadvisor reviews emphasized the excellent and elegant aspects of relaxing and shopping the in the town of Taormina. In addition, several reviews have mentioned the excellent connections to Mount Etna. In this review I want to cover a somewhat overlooked walking route to the prominence of Monte Veneretta. This route is recommended for experienced sure-footed hikers who enjoy hiking in relative solitude. In addition, the tour provides an absolutely breathtaking view of the Ionian Sea, a spectacular view of the coastline, as well as an unbelievable view of Mount Etna. From the pinnacle it is possible to enjoy an overview of Taomina’s Greek Amphitheatre as well as the middle age Fortress. The hotel staff can provide directions and sightseeing tips of the Monte Venerreta Trail as well as other hiking venues.

Following a day hike it was wonderful to experience the cordial welcome always provided by the Villa Schuler staff. I looked forward to those greetings as much as freshening up in the luxurious rooms. I highly recommend Villa Schuler as the starting point for a wide variety of hiking trails with adventure and breathtaking views.

I can only highly recommend Villa Schuler as an oasis of relaxation and hiking.

Dear Prof. Kane,

I would like to thank you for emphasizing the fact that Taormina has also a huge variety of fabolous walking and hiking trails.
For those, like you, who love hiking it might be of interest to be informed that the local Hotel Association at the moment is producing a new vectorial high precision map of Taormina and its surroundings which is aimed primarily at hikers and mountainbikers. This map will be available soon in all its member hotels.
By the way: our eco-friendly, ISO 14001 certified hotel supports sustainable tourism in all its forms and offers, amongst other related things, mountain bikes for free to all our hotel guests.

My wife and i stayed three nights at the villa schuler. from the moment we arrived we were treated so well by all. parking was available a must in taormina and due to the low season no charge was required. the breakfast pn the terrace was a lovely start to the day.
the breakfast was delicious way above average and set us up well for the day.
the rooms wer airy and clean with lovely original features and of course the jacuzzi bath. location could not have been more central with a two minute stroll through the oranges and grapefruit garden to the centre of the corso. while taormina is certainly designed to rip the tourist off the same cannot be said of the villa schuler. everthing was priced fairly and our stay was fantastic. thanks to all the staff for their professionalism and friendliness. we wiil be back again

Stayed in Villa Schuler for 6 nights at the beginning of September and we were really chuffed that we chose to stay here.

We had a ground floor room with a little patio and I have to say that it was very roomy. The bed was a bit hard but we both slept really well every night. The only downside of the room was that the air conditioning didn't really work too well.

Breakfast was fantastic and equalled by the magnificent view from the terrace. I'd advise you to sit in the shade because it was roasting hot in the open. The two waiters were sweating buckets!!

Food and drink from the hotel bar are excellent value in comparison to a lot of places in Taormina. Go for some of the local wine that comes in a jug! Bottles of beer also cheaper than many places too. They also give you a few free snacks too!!

Hotel is located well to explore town and get to the beaches. Isola de Bella was our favourite beach and we spent many a lazy day on the sunbeds!

Thank you very much for your review and for your positive comments about our hotel, the room, the views, about our breakfast and the helpful staff. Thank you also for praising the good value rates of our bar service. We decided not to share that widespread policy of trying to compensate cheap room rates with disproportioned prices for all kinds of additional hotel services as restaurant and bar prices, laundry service, phone rates, secretarial services, internet connection and the like.
We are obviously a bit dissapponted that you report, more than 2 months after your departure, to have experienced problems with your room’s airconditioning. If you would have told us about it during your stay, your problem would have been solved immediately!
As you know each of our rooms has an individually controlled A/C unit. On the contrary of the common centralised systems, this means all guests can always individually set lots of functions choosing between cooling or heating, ventilation or dehumification, and they can also individually choose the temperature and the speed.
We carefully checked our complaint files and also our maintainace reports of the period you stated and we did not find any reports about A/C misfunctions for that week, so we guess that you simply did not pass that information to our staff. Misfunction reports of our guests are of the highest priority to us and our mainainance staff usually solves this kind of misfunctions very quickly, mostly within minutes. Functional failures of the indoor A/C units are indeed very rare and the problem solving is usually limited to a quick reset of wrong settings of the single remote control. All solved very quickly, but of course they must be reported first.
This may therefore be also an invitation to all our future clients to immediately report all misfunctions, even the smallest deficiencies, in order to give us the possibility to remedy defects and of solving problems.

Staying at the Villa Schuler in Taormina, Sicily is a great experience for any and all travelers. This small and beautiful hotel perched high above the Ionian Sea, is one of the great bargains in European travel. The Innkeeper, Gerhard Schuler, who has assembled a wonderful, user friendly, bilingual staff, masterfully runs the hotel with extraordinary efficiency and friendliness. With it panoramic view of the Ionian Sea, Mt. Etna and Giardini Naxos, it is a dream venue for travelers looking for high quality in a beautiful venue at reasonable prices. Having just completed my 10th visit to this wonderful establishment I eagerly await my next visit. On five of my many visits to the Villa Schuler I have hosted tour groups from the USA. On many of those occasions I have received the highest praise a tour operator could hope for, “thank you so much for bringing me here, it was wonderful.” I believe you will feel the same way if you are fortunate enough to be a guess at the Villa Schuler.

The hotel stay was very nice- staff very friendly and helpful. Graet breakfast on the wonderful terrace. Villa Schuler is like an island of privacy and elegance in Taormina. And there is another point: The city of Taormina is badly damaged in my eyes through extensive mass tourism. The place itself is so beautiful- and today somehow the elegant charme of the past is gone-: Far too many cheap souvenirs, unfriendly staff in shops and bars and tons of mass tourists. I was very disappointed and also sad about this development. The city should really think if that is the future. If so I will not come again- even if the hotel is really an oasis of style. Thank you once more for the good service!

Best regards

Dear Mr. Girisch,

thank you for your positive review about our hotel. We are very pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay at our hotel defining the Hotel Villa Schuler as an oasis of style, privacy and elegance. We appreciated also your opinions as a very discerning guest, having very precise and exigent expectations about what an appealing holiday destination should offer. All the more we are on the other side reallz sorry to hear that Taormina as a whole has somehow disappointed you.

We find that your observations covering a partial aspect of Taormina are appropriate, but we feel that they do not seem to do justice to the town as a whole.
You surely can understand that we do love our town, although as “professional realists” we also must admit that there is (and always will be) lots of space for further improvements.

Taormina is the oldest and most popular tourist resort in Sicily having a glorius past based on a nearly 200 years old tradition in high-class tourism and hospitality. Five out of todays fourteen luxury 5 star hotels of Sicily are located in Taormina. Its other hotels are also reputed to be among the best quality accomodations in their category on our beautiful island: all outstanding, lovingly managed, stylish hotels in an appealing and enchanting medieval town. This obviously means that the expectations of the majority of Taormina’s clients are accordingly also on the high-end.

We certainly agree on one aspect that you mentioned: in some high season periods Taormina suffers indeed under the huge and not always predictable inrush of day visitors, especially when cruise ships anchor in the Bay of Naxos below us or when the italian school excursion season hits. Or on weekends, when fun-loving locals come here to spend a Saturday evening in town or come for the classic Sunday stroll on the famous pedestrian main street “Corso Umberto”. Those day visitors unavoidably originated the spreading of many shops offering cheap souvenirs and all kinds of tasteless kitsch, which you undestandably did not like. Those kind of shops are also not to our liking.

Those shops fortunately concentrate mainly on one particular limited area, the main pedestrian access street to the world famous greek theatre. Nothing more and nothing less then the ones you will unevitably find anywhere in the vicinity of all major tourist attractions – wordwide. Nothing to do with beauty or taste, just predictable marked-orientaded cheap kitsch.

Along most of all other pedestrian streets of Taormina you will incidentally find a good variety of shops and boutiques for the discerning visitor: small shops selling tasty gastronomic local specialities, sicilian artcrafts, embroideries, beautiful ceramics, antique jewels, paintings, antique furnitures, wine shops and then further up to luxury jewelers and top-design shoe shops as well as all the most renowned names in high-end fashion.
The good choice of coffee shops, ice cream parlors, pubs and restaurants also reflects the taste of Taormina’s visitors: there are obviously some few cheap places, but the majority offers in our opinion a good choice of solid and reliable quality products and also an accordingly high-end service. Some of our many prestigeous, top awarded restaurants have a reputation that reaches far bejond Taormina.

Without pretending to be unaware of some faults that Taormina has indeed, we think that in spite of its world-wide popularity our town is still maintaining intact its special charm and atmosphere in an astonishingly healthy way.

You suggest that it’s time for Taormina to rethink about its future and we fully agree.
We can confirm that the recent towns social and political development goes in the right direction: since June 2008 the newly elected town government has taken a new course based on sane impulses that have all their fundaments in innovating and sustainable tourism in order to seriously preserve and cultivate our undisputed beautyful and charming surroundings.
The new town government is indeed publicly committed to sustainable tourism, in conserving our beautiful cultural and natural resources and in promoting environmental integrity. The many initiatives already taken stretch from the requalification of our famous botanic gardens to the preservation and restauration of our unique net of ancient nature trails in the area, from creating a new quality imprint to all sections of our touristic product to organising a kaleidoscopic program of top quality events for the next season 2009.

We would be very happy to have the opportunity to welcome you again here in Taormina and to enjoy its - in our opinion - unbroken charme. We would appreciate to have the chance to make suggestions on how to discover those many highlights, beautiful corners and hidden jewels of the area. And we obviously would recommend to avoid high season periods and to try to fully enjoy the beauty and charm of our unique island with its intensively rich culture, tradition and history by visiting Sicily and Taormina in off-season periods such as March or April (before and after easter), end of June, in July or also in the second half of October or in November.
