“Wonderfully peaceful and relaxing”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 June 2011

Monte Tauro, booked through Classic Collection, certainly came up to our expectations. It is peaceful and relaxing, wonderful service and in the very best location to access the town, especially in the evening to visit the many, many restaurants and gorgeous shops! We only ate breakfast in the hotel, it was buffet style with a great selection to suit everyone with happy, friendly and helpful staff. The Reception staff were equally as helpful and friendly, the establishment was extremely clean and tidy and the rooms, all on the front with wonderful views, were excellent. The hotel has to be accessed via a steep slope, but you soon get used to it, and after eating lots of lovely Italian food, it helped to burn off the calories!! (Maybe not suitable for anyone with mobility problems.) A special mention must go to the resident pool attendant - his attention to his hotel residents cannot be faulted; he gave his best at all times!!

The hotel was clean, quiet and comfortable, with fantastic views out across the Bay of Naxos and to Etna behind. Every day, we had another ship moored in the bay below. The only snag to staying at the Monte Tauro is the driveway, which requires a nifty, three-point (or even five-point turn) in a busy, one-way street, down a steep incline. The staff will, however, come up to help if one is phased by this. Taormina is, quite rightly, a tourist magnet and much entertainment can be derived from eavesdropping in pavement cafes as to experiences on the hairpin bends on the way up.

Room Tip: All the rooms have balconies and a sea view

Overall my wife & I very much enjoyed our stay in this hotel.

On arrival, the room which we were allocated had an overpowering smell of cleaning materials. Our request for an alternative room was professionally & courteously handled.

I must commend all of the staff who were exceptionally pleasent and helpful especially the pool attendant who insisted that "he do the work while we enjoyed our holiday".

Minor 'quibbles' :-
Room safe is very small. No use for a laptop.
Balconies are seperated by plant pots - so no privicy.

Of the hundreds of hotels in picturesque Taormina, choosing may be difficult. I chose this one for its unique architecture and location, and was very pleased that I did. I agree with all the positives mentioned in the previous review by "sporadiccommentator" and would like to add that sunny afternoons on our large balcony with that million dollar view were - even as early as April - warm, relaxed and extremely peaceful thanks to the fact that the hotel is tucked right next to the gorgeous botanical gardens with plenty of happy birds. I was with a friend and we shared a junior suite (room 503). This 40 m2 space was just the right size for two. A great layout with twin beds (or queen if you wish), a separate sitting area, spacious bathroom + jacuzzi, separate shower/toilet and even a walk-in wardrobe! The double rooms are half the size and looked quite small - they also have a shared balcony divided only by pot plants, so the extra money spent on a suite will be well worth it. Note that being a terraced building cascading down the hill, privacy can be an issue as you have an open view of everyone's balcony. If you are very unlucky your balcony may be right under the scenic route of the hotel elevator. That said, this hotel has a sophisticated and quiet feel and I am sure you will find it a gracious hideaway and a perfect spot to stay in Taormina. All I missed was a coffee-maker in the room but then again, in Italy an excellent espresso is never more than a minute away.

Room Tip: Best view & privacy: high floor southern end.

An extraordinarily well located, splendid hotel with a remarkable view over the bay and beyond. Welcoming and efficient staff offered service with a smile.
Very comfortable, spacious and clean room with all the facilities one would expect in a 4* hotel. Copious buffet breakfast with plenty of choice.
The staff are available to help park your car from the top of the steep drive if required.

1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 January 2011

We had our much anticipated and expensive HONEYMOON at the Monte Tauro in May 2010. I have to be honest, I really was disappointed by our stay there. We had paid a lot of money for a week and we had higher expectations.

As we arrived we were slightly behind some older couples and they were laughing and joking with the staff, great staff I thought. As they serviced us the staff were very cold and merely smiled at us with no conversation. We were given a small room on the 6th floor (where everyone says not to go!) just above the restaurant. We had to wait until it was ready (come on!) so headed out for something to eat. The other couples were on the 4th floor and were shown immediately!

Our room had a terrible view, obscured by a wall. I was so disappointed, I cried! Remember this was our honeymoon! The staff (even though we mentioned this) made NO effort with us being such a special time for us to spend in their hotel. So, eventually my husband rang to reception and they changed us to a room a couple of doors down and presented us with some sparkling wine, it honestly was all a bit late, even the girl said our room wasn't the best!!! Our next room was a bit dark with a really dated blue bathroom with awful lighting. And the people had just checked out so we had to wait for it to be cleaned by a very lovely and charming woman, she was the nicest person to us in the hotel!!

They did offer us a bigger room at the end of the hall at a cost of €100 a night!!!

Maybe I just thought they would treat us a little special, we had paid enough money to have some expectations, its not like we chose to stay in a hostel..The food in the restaurant (which is very 1960's) was bland and the tea and coffee always cold.

Also, the other holiday makers were a lot older, all of them at least over 50. We are not young ourselves but this was like an OAP convention. We saw only one other young English couple at the end of our stay. And nobody really swims in the pool, maybe someone gets in, very quietly and swims a lenght, then gets out. Very bizarre.

Anyway the staff never said another word to us for the rest of our trip, we found them to be polite but cold anytime we had to approach them. The pool area was nice but I don't know why so many reviewers went on about the pool man, we met him a couple of times and he repositioned our beds but he wasn't this super friendly guy or anything.

I have definitley had much better experiences in much other hotels. There seemed to be a lot of overnight passing trade and maybe this fast turnover is where they make their money, they certainly were NOT interested in making our very important honeymoon stay anything special. There were also a few conferences on in the room beside the restaurant so people were coming and going.

I would not recommend this hotel for honeymooners, you will be disappointed. But if you are heading to Taormina for a holiday then the location of the hotel is just perfect. I think that is the best thing it had going.

We had a suite with a large deck, plenty of chairs to sit in the sun. Beautiful clean room, priceless view. Easy walk to town. Only negative we found was the rude pool bar staff and outrageous prices. Everything else was great.
