“A lovely experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 October 2012

We stayed two nights at the Monte Tauro as part of a tour of Sicily so we had five hotels to compare. This was the best experience. The hotel is on the side of a mountain so the sea view is wonderful from the balcony. The bed was comfortable too. The hotel had the best breakfast choice of any that we visited and comfortable beds. The staff were universally friendly and helpful. Taormina is a very pretty and very well kept little town with good shopping and plenty of places to eat.
And yes the pool attendant is great. While we were at lunch he moved our loungers round into the shade unasked. The reception staff were all professional and helpful and the desk was always manned. Parking is not easy, but they have an arrangement with a sister hotel so that your car is parked there and a shuttle bus takes you to it when you want.

Room Tip: Make sure you get a balcony

Excellent location within 5 minutes of the main street in taormina and also near to several lovely bars and restaurants. Very attentive staff everyone from the receptionist to pool attendant! Relaxing pool area with spectacular views. The use of a courtesy room on the last day to shower & change meant that although we had to check out at 11:30am we could continue to enjoy the hotel facilities until our departure that evening. Breakfast could definately be improved, very few hot options, horrible coffee, warm milk for cereal and very poor fruit selection. The rooms are clean and comfortable but need more guest/ tourist information. Parking costs €10 per day.

Located close to Corso Umberto with a beautiful view. Staff is very friendly and offers excellent service. The pool is great with a good bar for a lunch, snacks and drinks. Breakfast is fine but nothing more (drink your coffee at the pool bar). Rooms are decent, but a bit outdated. Balcony or terras is terrific. Overall, a very good hotel. Taormina itself is not my favorite; many, may tourists...

We stayed recently for a conference (venue elsewhere). Yes the driveway is very steep, but if you are dropped at the top, ring the intercom and they will send a van for your luggage. That said, this is not the place for the elderly, infirm or small children. We had a junior suite at the Etna end of the hotel; spacious, comfortable, quiet, clean and a lovely terrace with spectacular sea views and down the bay to Gardini Naxos and the slopes of Etna. Breakfast was OK, plenty of choice, but the coffee was awful.....very strange for Italy. However, the staff were very friendly throughout the hotel and I could not fault their service. The pool was clean and the pool attendant friendly and efficient. The areas that need tweaking? The information book in the room was next to useless. No information about where food/drinks were available and at what time, nothing about laundry, impossible to find contact numbers, nothing about the pool etc etc. No information about Taormina, and out of date instructions for Internet and wifi access. All minor and all easily fixed. But most of all, PLEASE, do something about the appalling, undrinkable coffee!!

Room Tip: Ask for one at the Etna end.

Sicily with Archaeological Tours was a great adventure, visiting ancient Greek and Roman ruins and some of the most beautiful museums I have ever seen! This hotel was definitely one of the highlights. Built down the side of a cliff overlooking the sea in one direction, and Mt Vesuvius in another, we walked up into the bustling city, visited the ubiquitous Greco-Roman ruins, took a funicular down to the beach. Out of this world sure fits this trip.

We used a taxi from the airport that dropped us at the top of the ramp down to the hotel. It's not a huge problem to walk down it, even with suitcases but, for the record, there is no reason why taxis can't go right to the door. I wish I'd known that before I'd tipped the driver!

We had a room on the 4th floor, a junior suite, well away from the elevator. The 'living area' of the room had more of a business feel (i.e. no comfy sofa) but this was more than made up by the large balcony. A table, three chairs and two sunbeds were all out there, and still plenty of space. It would perhaps have been nice if when the hotel had been built they'd made more use of natural materials, such as wood, for the surroundings of the balconies as prefab concrete is not exactly homely and when you’re using a sunbed that’s pretty much all you can see.

The breakfast provided a good spread and the view (from the 7th floor) could not be faulted.

We had used various guide books to identify the restaurants we wanted to use and the staff on reception was more than happy to make reservations for us. A good idea, especially if you want to secure a better table.

I've already mentioned the ramp down to the hotel entrance and I admit that walking up it could be a bit arduous. Good for the appetite tho! Other than the ramp I really liked the location of the hotel. It’s tucked away from the main tourist area and there are plenty of hidden walkways and cafes and bars to find. It’s also next to some very peaceful gardens, ideal to sit in to enjoy that afternoon treat, like an ice cream. Having said that nowhere is very far away so it’s easy to access the main street and join the rest of the crowds for a late evening stroll.

I can say no more than that I’d certainly stay in this hotel again.

We stayed in the Monte Tauro for a week. All of the staff we dealt with were extremely pleasant and very helpful.

The Room
This was on the fifth floor and had a very good view. The balcony was large which meant one could choose sun or shade. The bed was comfortable and pillows also comfortable. The bathroom had an overbath shower which had good waterpressure. The decor was a bit dated and some updating would help. The air conditioning was very quiet and very effective.

The Breakfast.
Restaurant was on 7th floor. There was a reasonable selection at breakfast though there was no granita which is such a sicilian breakfast staple. It took us a day or two to realise that staff would fry eggs and bacon if we wished. It would have been nice to see some bananas and peaches on offer. it was nice to have the option to squeeze your own fresh juice as you wanted. Boiling water for tea loving irish was only available early. after that it was pretty lukewarm.

The Location.
As we had stayed in the ATACAPOHotel last year we opted to stay up in the town this year. The benefit of this was that it was very handy for restaurants and wine bars in the evening. However there are 37 steps up from the doorway of the hotel to streetlevel. Not for the unfit or the fainthearted.

Room Tip: Pick a high floor and stay to the right of the lift shaft which can obscure view.
