“Good Quality”
Reviewed 17 June 2014

We liked the Villa Belvedere very much. Lying by the lovely pool in the pretty gardens, gazing out to sea was wonderful. But the hotel is in a town so there is some road noise from the buses, trucks and motorbikes (and a very noisy helicopter on two days!) The breakfast is fine and efficiently served and topped up and the location is excellent for access to the main streets.

However our room was a disappointment. We had booked a room with a terrace but on being shown in it was so small that you could hardly walk around the bed. There was certainly very little storage space and nowhere to hang long items at all. I pointed this out when we entered but was told that all the rooms of this category are the same size and that it was an old building so things may vary, which is contradictory in itself. Clearly the rooms are all different having seen the others on our floor and we spoke to other people who were thrilled with their large rooms. We were going to complain again the next morning but the same woman was on duty so decided to stay put as we really didn't want to start our holiday with a row. But it did put a dampener on the stay. We were just unlucky I guess and not assertive enough but sometimes on holiday you dont want to have to fight. We told Antonella this when we left and she was annoyed at what we had been told and understood our feelings completely but of course it was too late to change things. She did say that if we came back we could have the best room! We may well go back and take her up on her promise as it is a lovely place - but not in Room 5.

Incidentally our next hotel on out Sicilian trip gave us an automatic upgrade to the most fabulous room so 'you win some, you lose some'.

Dear Madam, Dear Sir,

Obviously we are pleased to read that you did enjoy your stay at Villa Belvedere in spite of the problems you unfortunately encountered because of a last minute problem, (which do occasionally crop up in spite of the best intentions), but personally I am very sorry indeed that more importance was not given to your justified complaint about your room, which I can only imagine was not grasped by that receptionist and who, albeit too late to be of use to you, has been severely reprimanded because you should in fact have been transferred to a much better room the following day, with proper apologies and an explanation of the circumstances but -apparently owing to the language misunderstanding, this did not happen.

I hope you will accept my sincere apologies, if belated and I hope too that you will not think this is just a routine reply because we really do care that our guests fully enjoy their stay with us. I sincerely hope that you do take up Antonella’s offer because I will personally ensure, if you decide to return, as I hope you will, that your room at Villa Belvedere will be absolutely splendid in every aspect.

Kindest regards,

Cristian Pècaut.

Manager.

Hotel Belvedere, Taormina, June 2014
We have just enjoyed a lovely week’s holiday at the Hotel Belvedere in Taormina, Sicily, very ably arranged by The Sicilian Experience.
Upon arrival we were greeted warmly and efficiently and quickly shown to our room on the top floor.
The room was a good size with twin beds along with very adequate storage space. The views from our balcony were stunning, comfortable reclining chairs were provided. The shower was fitted over a bath which was fine for us. Tea and coffee making facilities are provided, though no milk. The hotel provides a mini-fridge but not a mini bar service, which is great as you can choose exactly to your own tastes and buy in the local shops or at the hotel bar.
The buffet breakfasts were excellent with a generous range of cereals, fruits, cold meats, cheeses, scrambled eggs and breads. At an extra cost one could order omelettes, English breakfasts etc. The breakfast room is bright and airy, a good place to plan one’s day.
The hotel’s stylish communal areas provide comfortable, quiet, airy lounges and terraced gardens with both suntraps and shady areas. The pool area had plenty of loungers in full sun for most of the day. The shaded pool bar provided a drinks and food service [including a complimentary lunch] with a nice, waiter served, lunch menu.
The hotel is situated about 10 to 15 minutes’ walk from the town centre with the many eating places and shops. Being Italy, the road traffic can be a little disconcerting. One can avoid some of this by choosing the route through the nearby gardens which were inspired by an English woman, Frances Trevelyan. These public gardens with their “follies” are a “must see” place to stroll or sit and enjoy the views.
All in all, Hotel Belvedere is highly recommended.

Room Tip: We found room 59 on 3rd floor ideal for us, quiet with great views.

Spent our Honeymoon here, and could not be more satisfied. The day we arrived we got a small room with no private veranda. We told the helpfull staff that we really wished to upgrade, the next day we got to choose between a better rom in the hotel or the apartment. We choose the apartment and could not be more pleased. The apartment has a beautiful view and a very modern look. This made our Honeymoon just perfect. The breakfast also is the best. My husband has gluten intolerance, and that was not a problem at all. Glutenfree bread and all he need everyday. And of course we have to say again, the staff is so friendly and helpfull. We can absolutely recomend this hotel. The hotel is nearby all you need in taormina. Hope to come back again :)

Stayed at this lovely hotel for 4 nights at the end of our tour of the island. We had a room on the top floor, with a large terrace and wonderful view out over the bay and Mt Etna. The room and bathroom were perfect and very well equipped with everything we needed, and were kept in a spotless condition for the whole of our stay. The staff were always friendly and helpful, and the whole atmosphere of the hotel was of calm and relaxation. Tha breakfast was excellant, one of the best we have had. Plenty of choice with eggs, meats, cheeses a selection of breads, fresh fruits and mouthwatering cakes. A lovely hotel in a beautiful setting. Hope we will be able to return for another enjoyable stay.

Room Tip: top floor with sea view.

We researched our holiday thoroughly and were so impressed by the comments on Tripadvisor about this hotel that we booked our reservation back in November for a superior room with terrace to take advantage of the lovely views.

Our flight was delayed by an hour and the taxi driver hired by the hotel dutifully waited for us to arrive. However upon arriving at the hotel we discovered that we had been "Upgraded" to their apartment block that is located 150 yards up hill along the road out of Taormina. We were advised that our room as booked was not available - even though we had booked it 7 months in advance. We were encouraged to view the alternative accommodation and were told that it represented a significant upgrade on our original booking.

We viewed the apartment that was on the 4th floor of the block and was told that during the day it enjoyed a better view of Etna than the hotel and the coastline being in a more elevated position. We were unimpressed by this alternative - the apartments are very modern without character and crampt in our opinion and asked to be accommodated in the hotel as we had booked to avail ourselves more easily of the various amenities such as the pool, bar and restaurant. Upon leaving we bumped into our luggage that was being hauled up the hill by a beleaguered porter whom we redirected back to the hotel.

We were given a smaller room with a cramped bathroom and only a Juliet balcony, which for the sake of argument is no more than a door with a rail to stop you falling out! Our luggage soon arrived following the managements promise to transfer us the next day to the room of our choice. We eventually were given a choice of three rooms - one of which (Room 25) had a double aspect and large if totally overlooked terrace that afforded no privacy whatsoever to which we transferred at 11 am and started to unpack.

This may all seem trivial,l but it was so unexpected and we were so disappointed by the lack of professionalism - after all the room was booked 7 months in advance and if they thought we were not coming they could have easily telephoned the taxi driver whom they had booked in the first place and used frequently to update themselves on the delay.

We received a letter from management that said this never happens much (no consolation at all when it happens to you) and given half a bottle of plonk to compensate us.

Another gripe is that the hotel pool is not heated and surrounded by trees such that it only received sunlight for about 4 hours a day during our stay. It was therefore very cold and practically unusable. Hardly anybody used it for long and I thought some elderly lady users were going to have heart attacks when they jumped in to the shock of the icy water. The pool must be heated given its location and lack of exposure to sunlight.

Beds are on the hard side of firm and my wife could not really get comfrotable with the hard pillows to the detriment of our general sleep quality.

The breakfast is a self service affair and the buffet was well stocked and replenished. The waiters and waitresses only had to deliver drinks to tables and clear plates. However it appeared that most of them were at war with each other and rows were regularly heard from the kitchen that disrupted service as most seemed engaged in it! This forced the lady who sat in the corner of the restaurant, whom we surmised to be the owner or senior manager, to intervene on a number of occasions!

Additionally, there is a very busy road directly below the hotel that is used by many coaches and buses regularly during the day. As there are two "blind turnings" below the hotel the coaches and buses have to sound their horns to warn oncoming traffic of their approach. This means that there is regular traffic noise all day from as early as 6 am. There was also the smell of diesel and petrol exhaust fumes at times when the wind was in the wrong direction.

Whilst the hotel advertises a bar there is no dedicated bar staff and one has to wait for receptionists to serve you with varying degrees of proficiency in the evenings after dinner.

The pool side lunches were very nice and service was much better and generally I have to say that our stay was pleasant overall as the rooms are well appointed and clean and the hotel is well located for the town, but the hotel did not in my opinion live up to the five star ratings many Tripadvisor reviewers have given it.

Management was kind enough to provide me with a letter apologising for the problems on check in upon our check out and generously reduced my bill by E30 to reflect the smaller room taken on the first night when I think they could have easily been more generous given the disruption they caused on our arrival.

Room Tip: Book a superior room with a terrace to get full value. Rooms on the first floor have the best terrac...

Chriacques, Direttore at Hotel Villa Belvedere, responded to this review, 13 June 2014
Dear Sir,

In reply to your review, may we say how very gratified we are to read that some aspects of Villa Belvedere met with your full approval.

The complimentary half-bottle of what you refer to as ‘plonk’ however, was in fact an excellent quality, Carpené Malvolti, Italian prosecco (we deal in no other but good quality) which is normally much appreciated by our more discerning guests. It was moreover, impeccably served, chilled, with the appropriate champagne flutes and accompanied by fresh strawberries and was simply a goodwill token on our part.

We are naturally very pleased that having “thoroughly researched your holiday beforehand” and being so impressed by the very positive comments on Trip Advisor about Villa Belvedere”, that you were encouraged to make your own reservation – indeed, our often returning guests, their families and the friends to whom they recommend us and who come from many parts of the world, as well as many first-time guests, are kind enough to express their compliments about us on Trip Advisor, after the holidays they spend here.

We note with pleasure moreover, that you agree with the general opinion of our guests when you are complimentary about our pool-side restaurant and our dedicated and excellent staff. Concerning the talking which you heard from the kitchen, which in fact should not have been audible in the breakfast room, perhaps you have fallen into the usual error of non-linguists who, when they don’t understand a “foreign language” assume that the speakers are quarrelling. We do apologise for the fact that these conversations were audible in the breakfast room and thank you for having informed us of this detail which will most certainly be attended to and the staff in question reprimanded.

Very occasionally in high season, a last minute problem can occur, as was the case at the time of your arrival. Clearly we regret that you did not appreciate or wish to accept the complimentary upgrade you were offered on arrival, to one of our ample, de-lux studio apartments, but the very attractive, recently completely renewed room with the 'Juliette' balcony and splendid view of the sea and Mt Etna, the truly, very attractive and spacious bathroom (Cramped it most certainly is not !) in the main hotel that you preferred to occupy for which you were refunded the difference of €30 euros was very different from your slighting description as can easilybe seen on our website.

Moreover, the studio apartments are at almost 50 yards (not 150 yards) from the hotel, and on the same road which is completely flat on that stretch, with no incline whatsoever.

As we explained to you, the accommodation situation had arisen not because of your late arrival, but because of a last minute problem that occurred, making it impossible for us to accommodate you in the very beautiful and comfortable room with a private sun-terrace, complete with sun-umbrellas, reclining lounger-cairs, etc, which became yours on the following day.

You declare that your complaints may appear trivial while we have the distinct impression that they appear calculated as a reprisal because you were not given a larger refund.

If Villa Belvedere were as you describe it – we would have closed down long ago, instead of being practically always fully booked – by guests who particularly request the very rooms you would appear to despise.

Our pool is beautiful, as are the trees, bushes and flowers in our well cared-for and much-loved gardens that surround it.– The pool faces towards the sun at midday. It is physically impossible therefore that it gets no more than four hours of sun on a day in summer – The sun strikes the whole pool area from eight o’clock in the morning until five forty, or so in the late afternoon all summertime. How on earth can anyone calculate such an erroneous statement ?

Way down the hillside, well below us, on the road that leads from the coast up to Taormina, traffic does of course pass – but we are hardly in a large city and the traffic is duly appropriate to a small place like Taormina. – Did you by chance spend your holiday counting the number of times you heard a motor-horn blow? In all honesty, this seems unlikely if your holiday was as enjoyable as it appeared to be while you were here – that is, until you discovered at departure time that the "compensation" requested in the note you handed to our reception staff on arrival, was less than you had hoped for.

As for the wind bringing up diesel and exhaust fumes – frankly this is an unheard of, malicious falsehood.

We are sorry that you waited until the moment of your departure to complain about various things mentioned in your review, while the welcome letter that is clearly placed in every room states that on request, we have no problem in substituting pillows for those guests who prefer a different type and provide overlays on request for our excellent quality firm mattresses. This type of service is just part of the whole deal we offer.

Your inexact comment on the truly comfortable and attractive en-suite bathroom belonging to your room moreover, would certainly be refuted by the many people who know and love Villa Belvedere.

My dear Sir, when we are in the wrong, we apologise and try to make amends, when we receive positive criticism, we do our best to make matters right but when unfounded negative comments are published for whatever reason, as in this case, all we can do is reply as above.

Cristian Pècaut.

We chose this hotel for our first stay in Sicily and we didn't regret it. We wanted a nice, personal service and that's exactly what we got. Extremely childfriendly (to our 5 year old son Milo) staff. Our utmost favourite was Mrs. Carmela. We will never forget her for sure. Beautiful garden, nice swimming pool and nice food for lunch at the poolside. It was only a short walk to the Taormina centre which was perfect with a 5 year old boy. With all the nice shops, restaurants etc.
We can highly recommend this hotel.
