“A great ending to our honeymoon”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 July 2009

My wife and I honeymooned in Paris and Sicily. We travelled around Sicily for two weeks ending the trip with 5 days in Taormina at the Villa Carlotta.

We had no complaints and it was the best place to end the honeymoon.

It is a boutique hotel (at least by US standards). It was the nicest hotel of our trip. The drive there can be a bit scary if you are not used to the winding mountainous roads of Sicily, but once there were shown to our corner room. The terraces were small but had a great view of both the Sea and Mt Etna.

The hotel is perfectly located a nice walk from town and a short ride to the beach (they have a shuttle). And one night while walking to town for dinner, we saw a light in the distance. Etna was errupting (nothing dangerous). It was a fantastic site.

The beaches are rocky and packed with chairs, but enjoyable. The hotel pool is very nice and poolside service was great.

This was the relaxing portion of our trip. There are a few historical sites to see and of course Mt Etna. But after that we relaxed by the pool or the beach and sometimes just in our room.

The breakfasts were phenominal with fanatstic foods and views.

The only issues I had were the exchange rate for US dollars was horrible at the time so the cost for us was high and a person at the front desk convinced us to take a private car to Mt Etna. He said they had the best english speaking guides. So we paid several hundred dollars and the next morning our driver arrived and did not speak a word of english. We made the best of it. My wife speaks a little German and I speak a little French. The driver spoke in Italian, French and German. It actually made for a fun trip and we stopped in a few small towns along the way. Of course, I was a bit too adventuresome and almost passed out while trying to get my large body back up one of the hills covered in ash (be warned...it's a lot harder than it looks).

It is not as lavish as the most lavish hotels in the US, but in Sicily I'm not sure we could have made a better choice.

Not much to add except...this place is perfect. For the money...it's really remarkable. Will definitely come back. Room was lovely, the pool was great, staff friendly, views breathtaking. The best.

We stayed at the Villa Carlotta for 4 days in a junior suite from 3rd July - it was marvellous, beautiful decor, stunning sea views and faultless service - we were so pleased to have chosen this hotel.
The location was ideal for the beach or the town, and we would walk into town for dinner each night. There was a shuttle bus (complimentary) to a private beach, although we drove as we had a hire car. The valet parking was Eur15 per day, but worth it for the convenience and parking in Taormina is very difficult and expensive.
The breakfasts were great - full of scicilian specialities and served with a smile and a personal touch, on a roof terrace with views of Mount Etna.
We wish we would have stayed at this hotel longer and not moved to the south of the island, and it really was one of the best hotels we have stayed in, ever! We will be back.

Just returned from a stay at Villa Carlotta. I cannot praise the whole stay high enough. The room (22) was wonderful, beautiful, airy and cleaned every day to a high standard. The staff could not be more helpful. Antonio, Riccardo and the owner were always charming and had lots of suggestions for excursions. Breakfast was simply the best and would single out the aubergine parmiggano for special mention.
It's the only hotel for me in Taormina.

Everything was wonderful about this hotel. Great location overlooking the ocean and within walking distance to the town. Beautiful rooms. Nice pool area and terrific service. Really interesting bar area. Stayed two nights and wished we stayed more.

I can only second most of the reviewers regarding our stay at Villa Carlotta. It is a very lovely place to stay furnished with chioce pieces of funiture and the staff are very helpful and go out of their way to assist in any way they can. I had the Telegraph crossword photocopied for me amongst other things and we were always greeted with a cheerful smile. The rooftop terrace with views over Etna is spectacular and we had a very nice room. One minus if you are used to down pillows and duvets you may find these pillows and mattreses a little hard, but it did not detract from our overall holiday experience. Taormina is a charming although very touristy town, full of ancient architecture. A visit to the hilltop village of Castelmola is a must and stopping at the little church where parts of the Godfather was filmed is another. The best restaurant we found was Dracena which had the best service and seefood by far. Our daily trudge down the mountain (and up again!) left us extremely fit and enabled us to see the fantastic views walking down to the lovely but stony beach of Isola Bella. Delightful rockpools and islets. Beware though the stinging red jellyfish which come in from time to time. We had a wonderful time at Villa Carlotta and our thanks to the owner and his team which makes this hotel such a welcoming place to stay.

We stayed for three nights and were thoroughly pleased with the rooms, service and facilities. Antonio and the staff were great hosts who made our stay most enjoyable and at ease immediately. Our room was great and the ocean view was spectacular. Additionally, breakfast was fantastic, overall no complaints and would highly recommend.
