My wife and I honeymooned in Paris and Sicily. We travelled around Sicily for two weeks ending the trip with 5 days in Taormina at the Villa Carlotta.
We had no complaints and it was the best place to end the honeymoon.
It is a boutique hotel (at least by US standards). It was the nicest hotel of our trip. The drive there can be a bit scary if you are not used to the winding mountainous roads of Sicily, but once there were shown to our corner room. The terraces were small but had a great view of both the Sea and Mt Etna.
The hotel is perfectly located a nice walk from town and a short ride to the beach (they have a shuttle). And one night while walking to town for dinner, we saw a light in the distance. Etna was errupting (nothing dangerous). It was a fantastic site.
The beaches are rocky and packed with chairs, but enjoyable. The hotel pool is very nice and poolside service was great.
This was the relaxing portion of our trip. There are a few historical sites to see and of course Mt Etna. But after that we relaxed by the pool or the beach and sometimes just in our room.
The breakfasts were phenominal with fanatstic foods and views.
The only issues I had were the exchange rate for US dollars was horrible at the time so the cost for us was high and a person at the front desk convinced us to take a private car to Mt Etna. He said they had the best english speaking guides. So we paid several hundred dollars and the next morning our driver arrived and did not speak a word of english. We made the best of it. My wife speaks a little German and I speak a little French. The driver spoke in Italian, French and German. It actually made for a fun trip and we stopped in a few small towns along the way. Of course, I was a bit too adventuresome and almost passed out while trying to get my large body back up one of the hills covered in ash (be warned...it's a lot harder than it looks).
It is not as lavish as the most lavish hotels in the US, but in Sicily I'm not sure we could have made a better choice.
