“Great hotel in a lovely setting!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 August 2014

We have just come home from this hotel and wished we could have stayed longer! It was bliss! The setting is second to none. We had a room overlooking the sea with a terrace outside which was perfect for sunbathing or just chilling out. There is a lovely terrace in the garden that overlooks Etna and as it was erupting during our stay we spent many hours sitting here during the day relaxing and taking in the scenery. This spot was also well used at the end of the day for a drink and chat with others in the hotel. The room we had had great air conditioning and was of a good standard. The staff here were all brilliant especially the waiter (whose name we did unfortunately not discover) who served us on many occasions at breakfast and on Sicilian night which was on a Tuesday and consisted of a lovely 3 course meal with piano playing from the manager. We really enjoyed this night and were glad we booked it. Breakfast was a leisurely affair, sometimes taken outside on a terrace with amazing views and sometimes in the airy art deco style room. The choice of food was excellent, fresh tomatoes, figs, passion fruit and melon were available on different days as well as a good selection of breads, cakes, cereals, hams, cheese, fruit juices etc. The substantial breakfast often meant that we only ate one other meal a day during our stay. We loved spending time in this hotel during the day and in the evening admiring the views and taking in the atmosphere. The piano in the lounge was great for us as my husband plays and was able to have a go on on a number of occasions. It is a short walk into town up a number of steps but only took about 15 minutes to get to the main street in Taormina with plenty to explore on the way. The bus station and the cable car were only a 10 minute walk up the road. Although wifi is only available in the main communal areas of the hotel I managed to get it in our room. This is a charming hotel with fantastic staff and amazing views and we would definitely stay here again as we loved it. Thank you to the Bel Soggiorno!

On arrival, we were shown to our very spacious room, which possessed a large comfortable bed and a good shower but in common with many Mediterranean-style hotels, could have done with a little more drawer and storage space...and then we opened the shutters! What a view! Who cares about storage space?!!!! From our shared terrace, we could see the Bay of Villagonia and Mount Etna which obligingly put on a small firework display while we were there! The other guests on our floor were all English and we soon chatting over drinks (although the hotel is not strong on cocktails or bar service in general!) on the terrace, as though we were at an old-fashioned house-party!
There was an excellent choice at the buffet continental breakfast and how delightful to be able to eat it out on the restaurant terrace.
The centre of Taormina is quite a walk uphill - great for keeping fit and working off those extra calories from breakfast! A good hotel for couples but not so good for children - no pool or entertainment.
All-in-all, a lovely hotel with very courteous and helpful management and staff.

This hotel is a beautiful old typical Sicilian hotel. At first I thought it was a bit basic but that is its charm. The rooms are clean and the bathroom has been updated. There is also a a modern FST TV, not that we watch tv. I hope they do not modernise it any more as it is perfect as it is. The location of the hotel is not good if you want a beach, over five hundred steps down to the beach, although you can take the cable car so far then about 120 steps down to the beach to Isola Bella, no good for pushchairs. Also there is no pool. There are large communal balconies outside the rooms with sun loungers and views over the bay and Mount Etna. We do not sunbathe or swim in pools as we have better things to do on holiday. The town centre is uphill either by road or steps to the right of the hotel across a crossing. The breakfast is good and the breakfast room and outside area is beautiful. Even if you can’t get a table outside the large windows in the covered area are open, which when we went was 40 degrees C so a nice breeze off the sea was very welcome. The staff are pleasant especially Sabastian. Mount Etna is a must, it had erupted the week before we went and Catania airport was closed for a few days so we were lucky that the eruption had abated. There is still smoke streaming from the crater but I think as this is the highest and most active volcano in Europe it smokes all the time. Out of the hotel turn right, either up the road or steps, you can then go left for the town centre or right to the cable car station which is also next to a fantastic restaurant Bella Blue. The food, the views, the staff and happy hours are brilliant.

Room Tip: We had a room which was the same level as reception. There are no lifts but the Porters will take yo...

We stayed here for 3 nights. The hotel has been a family hotel for more than a century. The views to Etna and the ocean is fantastic from the breakfast rooms. Make you forget that the breakfast is kind of boring. The owner is very friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: Choose one on upper level with sea view.

It was VERY quiet (seemed like there were no guests, no hotel staff) at the time we were there. Nice breakfast, clean room, stunning view from our balcony (of the sea), breathtaking view of Etna from the garden. Not very well working shower in the room. The bed was not comfortable comparing to the "average" hotel bed.
There was no wif-fi in the room, but there was access near the bar area.
Overall we had a nice experience!

Room Tip: Check the bathroom before you unpack your luggage.

Just returned from a lovely week at the Bel Soggiorno. As others have said it is a bit like stepping back in time and we did sometimes feel as if we were in an Agatha Christie novel. The sea views are amazing and being able to watch the volcanic activity from the terrace at night was a bonus. The hotel is very clean and the gardens are beautifully maintained. We had two rooms and both had terraces with sun loungers and a table and two chairs allowing us to make the most of the beautiful weather and the view.

The hotel were able to provide a sandwich lunch when we arrived and breakfast included a good selection of juices and amazingly tasty tomatoes. The staff were great and the whole atmosphere of the hotel was very relaxed and friendly. The bar opening hours were a bit sporadic but it was usually possible to find someone to provide a drink or we used the helpfully provided bottle opener left on the bar. The food at the weekly dinner was lovely although the portion sizes left us feeling rather full at the end of it. The setting and piano playing made for a really lovely evening.

There is wi fi available in the dinning room and a couple of computers for general use although we were very happy to escape from the outside world and just watch the small boats and the cruise ships arriving.

As other reviews have noted there are quite a lot of steps involved but we saw that as a good way of working off some of the excellent food we had in Taormina. The town is about 10 – 15 minutes walk away and it was nice to enjoy the bustle of the town and then to retreat to the peace and quiet of the hotel. The hotel have an arrangement with the Lido La Dolce Vita so that you can get collected and brought back by minibus. The cost was something like 8 Euros per person for a lounger and umbrella once you got to the beach which was a preferential rate. The food served by the Lido was excellent. The bus station was within easy reach of the hotel (up the steps again) and the local buses were cheap and simple to negotiate.

We very much hope to return to the Bel Soggiorno next year.

The small rooms and even tinier bathrooms are nothing to write home about. But the breathtaking views of the sea , the garden and Etna are the elements that make this hotel quite outstanding. As well as both the lovely common room and breakfast area with their Art Deco influences that transport you to a different era. Any moment now, one could encounter Hercule Poirot or Miss Marple in this setting. The staff also deserve mention. Friendly, professional and quite versatile. Where else could one meet hotel receptionists that offered good restaurant tips, sound advice, played the piano, served you breakfast and remembered when you wanted your coffee!
